L, A.T E S T MOVEMENTS I INT INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
:?EW YORK LETTER. New York. Sept. 13. Another determined drive was made against the industrial share. Steel common and preferred, Siiw'ttrs and Copper suffered the largest declines of any of the active tstock.-j on th; list. Although the early prices were inclined to firmness, bulls on the industrial int-t with such an avalanche of st.-lling orders that the market could not absorb thein. H;nelt rs declined a point each. The K-ading rails ruled strong1 deSpite the weakness in the metal stacks. 1'ennsylvania and New York Central were again, w 11 supported and at tonight's eiowe these two Issues do not show any perceptible change from Saturday's riding prb e. The last prices were relatively lower for Smelters and Copper and with a decided weak undertone. Northern Pacific was the leader of the rails. The stock was widely tipped for the rise early in the day. The advance of two points was held up to the closing hour. Reading was strong throughout the day; at no time was there any show of weakness. The opinion that the standard rails will continue to show strength while the metal and Industrial stocks will Incline towards weakness is generally accepted as sound reasoning by a majority of Influential houses. D. J. Railroads were equally depressed and showed a reactionary tendency and it is very difficult to guage the market under present conditions. Conservative action under present condition is the most advisable, and the smaller engagements are In the market the better people will feel. The market was somewhat stronger at the opening, probably due to short covering by traders, but soon developed weakness, and under the lead of Copper, and Smelters, market again declined. We should say that a fair basis of valuation has been established in the bond market by the sale and subsequent , quotations of New York City 4per cent and' that with the absorptions of the floating supply of bonds a basis for investment in the security list will be established. There appears to be some reasonable expectation that a more healthy condition will follow In the copper metal market as a result of the price reduction to 16Va cents by the United Metal Selling company and decided curtailment in production by the Butte mountain corporations. We have been somewhat bearish for just a week, but it is time to turn. In our judgment tills morning's low figures aro not likely to be seen again for a long time. The market rallied up very strong during the afternoon, closing near the best prices of the day. Would make purchases on all recessions. Ridgely. The bank statement was not quite us good as expected, but very little can be taken from this on account of heavy payments for Union Paciflo convertible bonds, as also for the City bonds, and a good deal of money was Unquestionably withdrawn from banks and has not been returned there as yet, while in process of deposit against awards. It has been definitely decided not to pay a dividend on the preferred "A" stock of the Chicago Great Western company for the past six months. It Is understood that the earnings were equivalent to a part of the full rate which has been paid for several periods but thAt the management decided that in view of the unsatisfactory condition of the money market, that it would be the best policy to husband the resources. In some quarters tho recovery yesterday was considered a little too fast and if this Is the case we will have a little reaction. There is no reason at uli why stocks should go much lower and while wo will not have any material rise, values should hold their own. The present prices have discounted considerable of a set back JOHN DICKINSON & GO. j. especially !n the industrial world. Railroads seem to be on a good foundation and we think stocks can be bought on a fair recession. w e are prepared for trade reports in other lines showing analogous con - onions anu conservatism or the same kind with the progress more by reason of earlier declines in the security markets and difficulties In the money mar kets, earnings from business ventures are likely to show some recession for the current year and for the next as compared with 1903, but it is impos sible at this writing to avoid the conclusion that such influences have been very largely discounted in the security markets If not altogether so in that department known as the high class investment issues. STERNBERG 10 REHUI Berlin Officials Say Story is Improbable; Ambassador Likes Washingtoir. Berlin, Sept. 15. The story cabled to New York that Baron Speck von Sternberg, German ambassador at Washington, has been recalled at his own request, on account, as alleged, of a stubborn ailment, from which he has long suffered, could not be confirmed at the foreign office. Thluks Story Improbable. The clerk on duty said, however, that It was highly Improbable that the Baron would desire to change, since he likes Washington, has made many friends there, and has an American wife. Ilerr von Techirschky, mentioned as Sternberg's probable successor, has been a failure, both as a parliamentarian and a diplomat. Besides, It is believe he Is non persona grata to Chancellor von Buelow, although a favorite of the kaiser. Von Techlmchlcy Out ot Ilnnnles. The rumor probably grew out of the general talk about Von Techirschky succeeding Count Monte as ambassador to Italy. Von Techirschky would be the last man to be appointed to Washington. He is lacking in the social graces, and is retiring, 8hy, and reserved. :" Should Sternberg retire, his natural sucessor would be Baron Alunn, at present stationed at Pekin. WINS GIRL; NEARLY LOSES LIFE. South Bend, Ind., Sept. 16. Andrew Pop, after having defeated his rival In love and escorting the maiden of his choice to a dance, was attacked by friends of the vanquished man and forced to flee for his life. As a result one of the most thrilling foot races known in this part of the country took place. Pop headed his pursuers in a sprint of six blocks, and then, realizing that he was about to be trapped, jumped through a window and sought protection from the pursuers until the police could be summoned. At the police station Pop's coat was found to have been cut in a dozen places. This, he says, was done before he started on his race for life. Six men were arrested and charged with an attempt to murder. They are Emerick Kowatch, Stephen Nag, Joseph Kosax, John Jesal, Alexander Kowatch, and John Tekak.
