NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Kept. 14. The market showed rather firm tone during the early trading and fair gains were made throughout the list. Later a general attack upon industrials and the poor showing of bank statement caused general depression and Utj unsettled close was caused by liquidation. Coppers were off 1JA to 1. Both Steel common and preferred were heavy tit the close at declines of 1 Ti and 2 Vi points respectively. The fact of short Interest being largely reduced yesterday

nation and sold upon rally with confidence. A good deal of selling in .steel Was liquidation and a good many long accounts came out throughout th" Industrie list, particularly purchases which were made on yesterday's weakness. A few of the standard rails did rot participate in the general weakness. New York Central and Pennsylvania remained firm despite the decline of a point and one-half in St. Paul; about a point in Union Pacific and a like amount in the two Hill properties. Sentiment tonight seems to be decidedly bearish, particularly upon the Industrial shares. This has been an eventful week for the industrial group; not one of this class of stock has been exempt from attacks by the hear party and at the final week ending some drastic declines have been recorded. The market as a whole closed weak and feverish with indications pointing to still further declines.

CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago. Sept. 14. WHEAT Suffered a slight reaction during the first few minutes of the session caused in the main by the weakness in the foreign markets. Liverpool was quoted oneelgth lower which was disappointing to the trade here. December wheat sold off to 874 and back to 9Sto. "Weather conditions in the northwest are reported a little more seasonable; the trade which emanated from that section cf the country was more inclined to pell than otherwise. Receipts of new wheat at this market are arriving more liberal, this has a tendency to check the bullish demonstration in that cereal. Although there will be a fhort crop of both winter and spring wheat, the prevailing prices of that commodity entirely discounts this fact. Today's trading was largely of the professional sort and lacked individualism. The market closed fairly steady without any especial feature. Corn and oats suffered sharp declines after a slight rally nt the opening. The Ideal weather for the growing crops lias almost broken the back of the bull party. May corn declined from 69 s to 6S; May oats from 53 to 53. The trade in corn was the largest for some time. Crop reports from the southwest were more reassuring, etating if the present weather continued for a week longer the corn crop would be entirely out of danger. Corn in the sample market suffered a sympathetic decline of about a cent a bushel. The prospects for a sharp slump In corn values seems more than likely as there is a very large long interest in this cereal which will begin to liquidate In the near future. The coarse grain markets closed much weaker than the wheat market.

Colorado Southern First week Sept, $290,60S; Inc. $12,890. From July 1st,

$2,564,706; inc. $165,153.

The quantities of stocks are dimin

ishing; only small lots offered. This

looks like a turn for the better.

Stocks Yesterday's market showed

conclusively liquidation, and no doubt

it will continue when weak accounts

have to be closed out.

There is something overhanging the

market which must come out before

there can be any change. "Would buy

stocks only when very weak.

Small Flow of Tide. The tide of tho Mediterranean on the Algerian coast never exceeds three vlJ a half inches.

I have been wrong for some days. The Copper situation is no doubt rotten, but now discounted. Believe stocks should not be bought for a turn

at least.

Stocks Post & Flagg were among the Influential early sellers of Steel Common. There was a good deal of talk of liquidation for foreign account and selling by Morgan houses, but

some of the selling looked rather good to be true.

too

Such houses as Rutter & Goss, J. W

Davis & Co., Clark D. & Co. appeared as buyers after the opening sales. In

spite of recent changes or position a

good part of the street still believes

William Rockefeller to be the largest

speculative holder. (Refers to St. Paul.)

Copper is the one remaining weak spot. When Insiders put Amalgamated on a regular 8 per cent dividend basis, a few months ago. It was a fair inference that they knew that rate could

be continued Indefinitely. It seems

scarcely conceivable that In the pres

cnt state of public opinion it was dona simply .as. a stock jobbing device. Of

course we know now that the main ob ject In view was to unload stock

Amalgamated was then In the nineties

and insiders handed it to the public by

the ream, but this does not prove that the dividend will not be maintained. We expect some further irregularity but stocks are a purchase on any re

actions. Ridgely.

S. R. Geist, the gas and electric light magnate, whose interests are strung from Chicago to Philadelphia and include the South Shore Gas and Electric company of Hammond, has chosen Indiana for his new home and la now planning for the creation of an estate which is to be crowned with a mansion that will be second to none in northern Indiana. The exact location for this dreamland has not been definitely decided upon with the exception that it will be in the neighborhood of Valparaiso. That Mr. Geist will move his place of residence from Philadelphia to the west is a settled fact and in order to awrait the completion of the estate Mr. Geist has rented a place in Chicago which he will occupy until his Indiana nome is ready for occupancy. FOR POLICE FORCE

South Chicago, Sept. 14. Special There will be another examination for candidates to the police department in the near future, according to a statement made yesterday by Secretary Rafferty of the civil service commission. At the last examination which was held about two months ago there were 3,192 applications of this number, only 937

Indianapolis, Sept. 12. There must have been a heartrending scene among a gang of safe-blowers after they had blown a safe to pieces in William Kathert's grocery, at Meridian and McCarty streets. They got within sight of the money in the safe and then could not get it because a tin chewing-gum box in -which the money was kept had become "wedged within in such a manner that th thieves could not get it out. Just at this moment, too, they -were scared

a fish pond, fine trees and paved driveways. The mansion to be evected on the place will be built for elegance and comforft. with a strain of the artlctlc to run through the whole.

Mr. Geist is a golf enthusiast and in order to carry on his sport, he will se

lect a piece of ground created by na

ture for golfing. It will in all prob

ability contain nine links. As he is known among the golfing fraternity in

Chicago, It is more than probable that

there will be many visitors from the metropolis who will follow the elusive

sphere over Mr. Geist's links. While he has taken to the autoino

bile in late years on account of its

average speed and lor business pur

TVIIY MOB LEFT HOME His Mother Punished a Dos for Good Cause., and the Kid Gave Much Trouble. EJwood, Ind., Sept. 14. Love for his pet dog prompted Robert, the 7-j-ear-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Hastings, to leave his home. Incidentally it excited the whole city and almost resulted iu the lynching of an innocent horse trader who tvas passing through, the country. The boy's mother whipped a cur, which the boy bad as a pet, for chasing the poultry. "You shan't wliip my dog," said the lad. and he caught the dog and led him around the house. An hour later he was missed. Word came to the excited parents that he was seen with a Gypsy band south of the city driving toward Anderson. A dozen men pursued the wagons and came up with the nomads near Frankton. The drivers of the Gypsy wagons were roughly handled and serious results were threatened when the father, who had taken another road, came up with the boy, whom he found trudging in a southerly direction. The dog, for which he had deserted his home, was trotting at hia bee Is.
