(Special to Gary, Ind., Lake County Times). Aug. 7. The Gary real estate board is the matter of in an awful tangle over the election of its ofare two claimants for fleers. There the office of secretary and two for that of treasurer and at a meeting which was held yesterday, all four of the officers attempted to officiate at once. The result was the greatest confusion and resulted in the determination of the board to hold another meeting at which another election could be held to decide the matter. Thore were a large number of the members In attendance and when the meeting began, both Mr. Vallette and Mr. Kirschman proceeded to take the minutes of the meeting. When they had linished, however, they were In no humor to compare notes. It Is said that Mr. Vallette was elect ed at the last meeting of the board after a spirited discussion. His pre decessor, air. .Kirseiiman, however, was advised to continue in office. He did so and hence tho trouble yesterday. Both Mr. Baker and Mr. Reiner also officiated as treasurer of the board and an election will be held to decide their claims to the office. A representative of the World Today appeared before the board and closed a contract for three pages of a writeup in the September issue. The com mittee on entertainment was given charge of the banquet to be tendered to the Press club of Chicago at an early date. Bardie Ripley and Florence Shea; Messrs. BIG SNAKE FRIGHTENS PEOPLE The Michigan City Evening News of Wednesday of last week, has the following to say of the Lambriffger Zoo now exhibiting in this city on the lot beside the new Methodist church: "I,ast night when the tent of the animal show was crowded with people, Mr. Lambrigger attempted to take the great Regal python from his cage and straighten him out to his own length. Tlie sight of such a monster apparently at liberty struck terror to the crowds. For a few minutes there was almost a panic. There was a sudden flight from the cage, but the snake was on his good behavior and nobody fainted or left the tent. The snake is certainly a big one. lie is nearly thirty feet in length and weight 240 pounds. Hut lie lias not fed since he reached the port of New York on the 2oth of March last, and in all probability has not fed since he was captured seven or eight months ago. Should he feed, ho would gain llesh and weigh considerably more than he does at present. Yesterday the reticulated python swallowed a Belgian hare weighing six pounds. If the nine-foot snake can swallow a six-pound hare, it is rather alarming to think what the big fellow could swallow. Trof. Sheak is very conservative and thinks a twenty-five pound pig would be about the limit. But others are willing to wager lie could swallow a fair-sized man. "The show is doing a very good business in Michigan City. A large and appreciative crowd clamored for entrance last night as soon as the doors were opened, and lingered a long time in front of the cages. All came away speaking in the nignest terms oi praise of the collection. "Joe," the fine orangutan, and the great feature of the menagerie, is suffering from a slight cold. Prof. Sheak felt the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet, and took his pulse. He said "Joe" had about a half degree of fever, but thought the indisposition would not prove serious. At last reports the interesting animal was feeling better." The dime la your pocket In not of as much value na the dollars that can be secured throa&h advertising.

4 AVho took oath today as GETS CONTRACT FOR GIGANTIC BOAT American Shipbuilding Co. Receives Important Order From Buffalo. (Special to Lake County Ttmea). South Chicago, Aug. 7. The American Shipbuilding company on the East Side has received another order for a large boat which is to be completed next year. Harvey L. Brown of Buffalo, will be the proprietor of the boat which is destined to be used to carry ore and coal. The newly ordered vessel is to be one of the largest of the ship company's output, it having a weight capacity of 9,000 tons. Its length is 524 feet over all, with a beam width of fiftyfour feet and a depth of thirty feet. As a carrier of ore and coal this boat will be one of the most compltely equipped on the great lakes. The sxecifications for this vessel call for a duplicate of the one ordered a few weeks ago by J. J. II. Brown. Another few weeks and the 600 footer Salt Lake City will be ready for launching. Work in the ship yards is progressing in fine shape and all indications point to great activity for the fall and winter. The effects of the boilermakers' strike are passing off and there is satisfaction all around. The torco empKfea now is not quite so large as was the one employed before the strike, but conditions remaining undisturbed, from now on there is every hope that the yards will soon be working at the same rate as they have been in the past. Ore is coming into port at the head of Lake Superior, but still not fast enough to supply all the waiting vessels. INVENTS ONION TOPPER. GrWIilh Man Is Having Patented Device YI.U-h Will Kill Long Felt Want. Peter Jansen, a well known Griffith, Ind., farmer, found that necessity is surely the mother of invention, and so has had patented a machine for topping onions, which has proved a great success in filling a long felt want. The machine in appearance is similar to a feed chopper, and contains some very intricate machinery. It is described by the United States patent office report as having in combination, a hopper forming frame, a plurality of cleaning and feeding bars forming the bottom of said hopper and having shoulders at their upper edges, a shaft having a plurality of cranks on each of which one end of each bar is mounted, a fixed support for the delivery ends of said bars, in combination with a plurality of pairs of rolls mounted within said hopperframe to rotate in opposite direction In pairs, one of said pair having spiral grooves of greater width than depth each grove forming a pair of surface edges which co-act with the non grooved roll to pull off the onion tops, means for causing the rolls to rotate in oposite directions in pairs, and means located at the junction of the said bars and the topping rolls for opening the crank-shaft. The prisoners in the county jail at Valparaiso are up In arms, The sheriff of Porter county, Lou Green, has been feeding them dog fish Instead of Borne more palatable variety of the finny tribe and they got next to the fact the other day. They suspected they were being fed carp and although it is easier to bear the thought of eating carp than dog fish, they did not like the idea at all. When, however, they begon an investigation on their own account and found they were being fed dog fish, the veriest hobo among them, even the tomato can carriers rebelled, and they now demand that they be fed articles of human diet. Of course they cannot enforce their demands except to appeal to the humane society and they hardly feel like taking these extreme measures. But the idea of eating dog fish is repulsive to them and if the warden of the jail does not change their diet, he is likely to have some sullen prisoners to deal with. Matter of Dollars and Cents. Tho only reason ascribed by the prisoners for the fact that they are compelled to eat scavenger fish is that the warden is allowed so much per prisoner for their board. If the men are fed white f,sh instead of dog fish, there will not be much in the boarding of prisoners while the profit on a meal of the latter will be exactly the cost of the white fish. It is not expected that there will be any trouble over the matter as Green is said to be a "good fellow" and knows how far to carry a joke. Hereafter the drunks and hoboes may be a little charry about some of the dainty looking morsels that are placed hefore them but after all, the sheriff says It mav serve to ker down the number of undesirables.
