BY EXCLUSIVE WIRE TO THE LAKE COUNTY TIMES

NEW YORK LETTER. New York, Aug. 5. Tim sweeping Senunciation against the Standard Oil company, rendered Saturday by Judge Landia was the ii i f bearish factor in the stock market. The stocks with which the Rockefellers are closely asloeiated were the weakest on tho list. St. Paul opened off a point; Union Pacific three-quarters; Copper and Anaconda a point each and Smelters a point and one-half. . After the opening flurry, however, the inark.-t lapsed into extreme dullness. Today': action demonstrates without a question of doubt that the public is riot in the market to any extent. Had there been a large public following long of stocks, tho decision rendered against the Standard Oil company would have been the club to cause, a sharp slump in stock values. As it was, it only occasioned a decline averaging about one point throughout the active list. After tho noon hour, tho market reBponded to a littles buying by shorts Which brought about a slight rally in the Harriman shares, Northern Pacific, Great Northern and Copper. The market is in such a professional state tnat lluctuations are bound to be within narrow limits. The mldBummer dullness was more in evidence In Wall street today than on any of the previous days this summer. The transactions up to the noon hour did not exceed 175,000 shares. The fire which broke out near 103

Broadway caused a break in the ticker service here. It lasted fully half an hour. After the tickers resumed operations, stocks were quoted from one to two points lower. The Belling pressure extended to almost every active stock on the list, the closing prices were practically Iho lowest of the day.

start and for a good share of. the day thereafter, early prices were higher, shorts coming in, longs unloading and cash interests putting Helling pressure on later months. It was- tho popular impression that the big lines here were considerably reduced. Iowa has begun to ship new oats. Country acceptances were fair but by no means as large as expected following such a bulge.

There was considerable activity in Union Pacific, which again appears as the leader, and from the way that this stock was taken yesterday it looks as if higher prices will bo seen for this security in the very near future.

The increase in Southern Pacific

year to Union Pacific stockholders. I

The market in its entirety is subject to manipulation, Tut people who trade and can watch the tape are in a good position to avail themselves of the declines and rallies, and we think that on reactions, stocks can be bought but should be sold on any good upward move.

It seems absurdly ridiculous to talk about Southern. Pacific when it is earning 13V4 per cent on the stock and only pays 6 per cent and goes off at once a couple of points; this stock will surely sell higher than Atchison, and I believe Atchison one of the very best stocks to buy right now at 92U-
