NEW YORK LETTEE. New York, Aug. 2. Early prices on the stock exchange displayed a stronger undertone. It was the consensus of opinion this morning that the selling was being overdone by some liKht weight bears which would be furo-d to cover o nany show of strength, t-yh was the ca.so during th. first two hours of the session. The higher priced railroad shan-s such as Union Pacific, St. Paul, The Hill Stocks, Southern Pacific and Heading were, marked up about an average of a point over the closing figure. The industrial thares. .however, still retained the sune weak undertone
which was in evidence at the close last evening. Both Copper and Smelters j were pressed for sale in the same huge blocks as heretofore. Although there was a little rally near the noon hour In sympathy with the advance in the railroad list, it was of short duration and only made the bears more aggressive and occasioned renewed efforts to depress the values of these two Issues. The belief prevails and is gaining more followers dally that the conditions in . the metal markets of the world are. in an unsettled state. The constant reduction from day to day, in the copper metal market emphasizes this fact. Although Amalgamated Copper has amassed a large surplus while the copper metal market held around 25 cents per pound, this can easily be dissipated should a drastic break to 15 cents per pound occur within n month or two. There was considerable gossip Indulged In around the exchange us to the time money market. Opinions were ventured to the effect that time- loans will rule high until the end of the year. The new crop will begin to move in about a month and that will draw all of the idle funds to the exterior, which will cause bankers to call loans at a higher rate than the ones now prevailing.

LIVERPOOL MARKET.
Liverpool, Aug. 2. W-.eat opened unchanged; corn opened one-eighth higher. Wheat closed three-eighths higher; corn closed one-half higher.
CHICAGO LETTEU. Chicago. Aug. 2. WHEAT Bettor tone in wheat today and more influential buying to the strength shown in coarse grains which, was a help to wheat. There were other influences also; fear of frost in spring wheat country northwest chief of these. Temperatures down to 3 4 in North Dakota and near that beyond the Cana
dian line. More numerous claims of
black rust but as heretofore no serious claims of actual damage. Local elevator interests scrambled for tlie arrivals of new wheat lure today, they being light and country acceptances
small of bids from lure and other winter wheat markets. No indications of export business. Local exporters say that bids from abroad are few and far below workable limits. Best buying of wheat today was by the same interests that havo recently been buying corn and oats freely. Cash sales 25,000 bushels to tlie seaboard, 15 loads. CORN A big trade i:i corn with prices higher and trad again largest In distant months. September held its own better today than yesterday. Practically all the public elevator stock here has been shipped out and all of it has Veen sold. Trade has feared cold weather, temperatures being unseasonably cool the country over and near frost northwest. Good ship-

STOCK AND EONO BROKER,
Stocks Carried on 3 to 5 Point Marjin, Nominal Rates of Interest.
Atchison bonds you will notice are all taken by Morgan; the stock did not sell off to any extent. The prospects for corn wero never better at tliis time of the year. The annual report on Atchison will show between 16 and IS per cent, earned on the common stock, and you can buy it below 93; about 63s on the investment, I will confess I am a bull. The market was again reactionary, although there was a rally at the
opening, but a good deal of stock came out and prices quickly declined from 1 to 2 per cent, and under short covering only a slight rally took place. The weakest stocks on the list were Coppers and Smelters and the announcement that Southern racific would pay a dividend at the rate of 6 per cent, did not help any. There seems to be a rather pessimistic feeling amongst the traders on the floor and the public will not come into the market under present conditions. On reaching the house he discovered the author seated in his garden engaged in earnest conversation -with a little boy who had a large towel pint.ed around his neck. The author received his visitor cordially, but seemed rather absent-minded. "Are you willing to tell me a little about your next important work?"' asked the reporter. The literary man clicked a pair of shears ana patted the boy on the shoulder. . "We vere just talking about it as you came up," he said. "Willie thinks I ought to do it with a bowl, but I think I can do it without. What would yoit advise? You see his rao:her has always cut it befoit, tut she's away just now!"
