LATEST MOVEMENTS I IN INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
BY EXCLUSIVE WIRE TO THE LAKE COUNTY TIMES
NEW YOEK LETTER.
New York, Aug. 1. The demoralization in the metal markets which seems inevitable in view of the underselling of the lT'iependf.nt producers caused a Sharp slump in tin? price of both Amalgamated Copper ami Anaconda. The former declined two points, selling at 84; Anaconda sold off from 55 to 53 VzThis is a break of almost ten points in both of these securities since the prominent Boston speculator -advised the country generally to purchase these shares. The break in Smelters from 113 to 111 U attributed to selling by Inside interests. It is asserted the weakness in the metal markets of the world will cause a decrease in the earnings of the American Smelters company. The general retrenchment in other lines of business, it is said, must sooner or later be felt in the iron, steel and metal markets and have depressing effect upon the earnings of these industries. During the early part of the session an organized effort was made to bring about a rally in the gen ;ral market by marking up the higher priced railroad shares. St Paul sold up from 1314 to 133; Union Pacific from 111; to 143; Southern Pacific R9 to 90 but ,the bulls met with such determined opposition from .influential selling that they abandoned their efforts and joined 'the bea- army and added fuel to an Already weak market.
Even the action of the directors of
Southern Pacific in increasing the divi
dend rate from 5 per cent to b per
eent fell fiat and only induced profit
taking by those who bought the shares tit lower figures. The advance in lower figures during, the past ten days from 85 to 91 has in a measure discounted the good news on the stock. During the last hour of the session short covering brought about a raily in the railroad list which had the effect of closing some of the stocks hit r than the final sales of yesterday. Ti.o Industrial list, however, displayed very little rallying power. The early declines in these shares were not recovered.

CHICAGO LETTER.
Chicago, Aug. 1. Dullnes with a firmer market early and a heavy tone later were the features of the wheat trade today. Fears of frost northeast and firmer markets abroad were the early factors. Temperature in parts of the extreme northwest were dangerously near the frost market and Minneapolis had a sharp bulge on a material drop in temp, there. Black rust, however, lost most of its power to influence the trade. It was the general report from men in the field that rust was not spreading and had caused no damage. Country acceptances were again light here and southwest and elevator people were buying new wheat more freely than heretofore. Generally better tone in flour trade reported here. CORN. An unusually large trade in corn today. Local speculators of the heavy sort led the buying and those interested in oats taking a hand. Crop reports indicated a more rugged crop than had been previously supposed with a large percentage claimed in the very poor class. Much corn tasselling out short and promising small ears. For-

Bear operators became aggressive in
tr.e arternoon trading on the assumption that there was no bull opposition
to a downward movement and some he uses handling large bear accounts so'.d blocks of s-tocks of 5.000 shares or more at a time. This selling induced moderate liquidation of speculative holdings, but the bulk of sales at the low level of afternoon and all through the day was for short account.

HEARD ON THE B0UESE.
The Steel earnings are the largest
the company has ever shown; it is
about 24 per cent, on the common for the past year. The Morgan interests
were opposed to any increase in the
dividend at this time, they are putting:
the earnings into tha plant at Gary and are not putting out bonds or not
es or new stock; it really means the
next time they put Steel common on a
4 per cent, basis it will stay there year
In and year out. W. R. 11.
The most important factor In tha
stock market today was heavy selling
oi Steel common by houses with west
ern connections and it wa uasumed that a large amount of speculative stock acquired by western interests has been liquidated. Brokers handling tha polling orders said the selling was induced wholly by the decrease in orders
on hand on June 30 compared wsth the
same Item on March 31. While this
liquidation was in progress brokers of
ten acting ftr strong interests in th-j
Steel stocks, forced the price of Steel
common as low as possible, creating a
belief in some quarters that a move
ment was on foot to accumulate the stock as cheaply us possible.
A good recovery In the tone of the
London market yesterday, which appears to have be-n further developed
today, less apprehension concerning the
Egyptian troubles as reflected in Man
chester, paved the way for a rally in our market yesterday afternoon which was helped along by the strength of
the Erie, support to the Harriman's
and finally by anticipations of a very
favorable Steel report, which was
published after the closo. The only
feature of the report which could create adverse comment, was the decrease in new orders of 23 per cent booked since the first of July, as compared writh last year. In all other respects the report was distinctly better than expected. The morning reviews point to the earnings of Erie as justifying full dividends on first and second preferred but the suggestion is made that the dividends may be reduced in view of the roads financial necessities. Shipment of $400,000 in gold to Canada, with prospects of further engagements for export on the French etearner sailing tomorrow, is noted in the financial columns.
A WANT AD in The Times Why? Because Results have made the Times the want ad medium of the entire Calumet Region. All want and barter and Exchange ads are classified try oe.
Miller & Co. Frices are ridiculously low, stocks are earning two to thre;e times what they pay in fact net more to tha buyer than ever before, the conditions bringing this about have been numerous but in the regular order of affairs these conditions will change and stocks will once again sell on a bafds at which they sold before the new state of affairs existed, the trtnd therefore is upward for the long pull regardless of day to day or wuck to week fluctuations.
T. A. Mclntyre & Co. It is the general belief the big interests have accumulated more stock of the general list than they had expected to take in working up this recent bull movement in the market and this increase in Southern Pacific's dividend was part of the program to make it successful in forcing prices higher and inducing the revival of general outside investment and speculative buying, the indentity of those behind it have been recognized for forae time and as it is generally known they are loaded up with stocks and also involved in underwriting syn
dicates which have been unable to market the enormous amounts of new
securities recently authorized more or
less skepticism has prevailed and ia still in evidence in regard to the gen
uineness of the bull movement and the Euccess of the ability of the manipula
tors to distribute their surplus stocks and at the same time maintain the ad
vance so far established in prices, the
banks are not In a position to extend much accommodation to speculators for
running a bull movement in the stock
market at present.
A. O. Brown & Co. The bank state
ment was negatively good although not up to the most optimistic expectations.

Something to Regre. "Are you happier now that you own your own home?" asked the solicitous friend. "Of course," answered Mr. Meekton, "there is a proud satisfaction in having my own place. But occasionally I can't help longing for tho time when my wife kicked to the landlord for repairs instead of coming to me."
