CLARK STATION MAY BECOME PART OF GARY. People of Suburb Steel City Ilelieve It Would be to Their JutereMs to .AmulKauiate and .Step May be Taken Soon. Tho. old rumor of the dtsiro on the part of Clark Station to become a part l Gary, is being revived and it is ihfltrstood that the jmi1? over tln-ro 6re anxious that the rumor should become a reality. Tiny fed that they want to be a part of tin.- eity that utirrounda them.' Trustee Kiim-i't of CuStirriet township is also anxious that they (should become a part of the local municipality on account of the schools Which he lias to handle at iM.irk. Annexing' it to Gary would take off his hands a while elephant and at the same time give both Clark and Gary better school service in that ptirt of town by conibininK the work and putting in better teachers than the scattered work would warrant. Briefs. John McCormick of Toluca. 111., expects to begin moving into hi building In the Minnesota block on T'.roadway near Eighth avenue, the latter part of this week. Special agent 'YVocssner of the American Central Fire Insurance company, their Indiana representative, spent yesterday here looking after their interests with Local Agent Johnson. The contractor for the Moody-Engle-hart building on ltroadway south of Ninth avenue lias begun work on the foundation of the buildtng. Excavating has also begun for the McCormick building that is to be erected adjoining the former structure. The Misses Ethel Croweil, Ethel Ebright, Edith Goodman. Eu!u Eetrie and Orpha. smith of Hammond, made pood an old promise to local friends by spending yesterday afternoon here. They saw the scenes on Eroadway, visited the police station, caught a birdseye view of the plant site, inspected some of tho buildings and stopped for a chat with the postmistress. They returned via the Wabash in the evening, each one retaining a couple of Oxfordsfull of sand as a souvenir of their first visit. Instructions have been given by the commissioner of buildings, Mr. Kilver, asking that a restraining order be issued against the Schillinger Brothers company who are putting up the building at the southeast corner of Broadtray and Fifth avenue, to prevent them continuing the erection of the building. The commissioner had ordered them to remove the pilasters of the building from the street, they projecting into the street some four Inches. Tins is the first enforcement of the new building ordinance that has developed serioua opposition. The insurance rate inspector. Mr. Soelzer, of the state rate inspection bureau, made ready an answer yesterday afternoon to the question so many builders and owners of brick buildings are asking relative to the reason for the high rates on apparently good risk. Many of the buildings are built with art air and light shaft that is built up of frame and covered with metal. This method of construction destroys all of the owner's precautions that may be taken in the building to prevent fire and naturally makes the rate seem exhorbltant. For Diarrhoea A. D. S. Mrs. Mary Cripliver of Whiting, who is temporarily assisting in the post-i ornce met wiri a narrow escape Saturday morning while at the Lake Shore depot while in Whiting and has been ill since from the fight. The fine four-story brick building under construction by Barney Cohen on the corner of Michigan and Grapevine is now up three stories. Over the arched entrance is enisled in stone the words, "Indiana Harbor Auditorium." The building covers the entire fifty -foot lot and will cost J4S.000. Alderman Walton expresses himself in favor of condemning enough land on the lake front for park purposes. He is also in favor of replacing every board walk in town with cement, and made a motion in the council to that effect, which was lost. He is a strong advocate of the new sewer system to turn the sewage away from our water supply before we have an epidemic of typhoid fever such as Whiting has suffered. He thinks the only solution for Whiting to purify its water supply is to burn its sewage and the refuse instead of turning it into the lake to pollute its own and our water supply.
