Mr. Calliper was s badly injured that ho was unable to make his way home and bleading profusely from his wounds, he lay helpless along the Chicago, Lake Shore and Ka stern tracks. The report was sent to Gary to the effect that there had been a man hit by a train and so lr. Templin was called over to the east part of the plant to look after the fellow. As eoon as Galligher was able to tell his story he informed the doctor of the negro's attack and the police were notified.
Only two marriage licenses were issued to Chicago parties today.
Briefs. Tho line of sewer in alley twelve, the alley east of Broadway, has been completed past Seventh avenue and is affording instant relief to the contractors who are building on the east Bide of Broadway.
The remainder of Captain Itforton's household goods will he shipped from Joliet tomorrow . The captain is counting the days until he gets settled down with his family in the new house on the west side which he has reserved for himself.
The Feuer Brother's building, just north of the hotel building at Broadway and Sixth avenue, is just receiving the first installment of steel work. It is to be 50x65 and will be occupied In part at least by a drug store. One of the brothers owns a very fine store In Cleveland, O.
City Engineer Melton has had prepared a photographic, plate of the official map he made some time ago of Gary and Toleston, reducing the size of the print to about 14x17. From this he is having printed a number of small pocket maps that are being eagerly picked up by local people. It is of a very convenient size, is accurate and official.
Contractors Gallagher & "Williams have well under way the vitrified block front on the Knotts building at the southwest corner of Broadway and Seventh avenue. The block which ordinarily is regarded as not a very pleasing material for the front of a building is making a good appearance In this case. They are, of course, burned a very dark brown, in some oases almost black, and are laid in a Jet black mortar.
Prosecuting Attorney Boone looked after matters locally himself yesterday. The usual gist of -justice court work was on hand. Half a dozen plain drunks, two or three assaults and battery cases and three for shooting promiscuously. This morning Officer Newman was detailed to take those who could not pay their fines, to Crown Point, one man going down for thirty-seven days. Judge Fltzgeral, from whom ho received the sentence, gave him the limit, ho having come tinder the judge's personal knowledge as a disreputable character. His offense yesterday was stirring up a fight in one of the camps just south of the river.

eu mo naroor came in on Saturday, was the M. A. Hannah which hails from Fairport, Wis., and was loaded with iron ore. .. The captain was Richard O'Conner and his ship carried 7.000 tons of ore. The iron is from the Allouise Bay country and will be smelted here in the new blast furnaces of the Inland Steel company, which will be ready for business in about ten days. The dredges are now at work deepening and widening the river and as soon as the bridges are completed the river will be navigable for big boats a mile

Mr. and Mrs. G. Dodge of Valparaiso were in town today exhibiting the new Maxwell automobile for which they are the agents.
While on the way to Crown Point an automobile from Chicago met with an accident about five miles west of town, and was hauled in by a farmer for repairs.
Benjamin R. Chatfield, three years of age, died laft Saturday morning about 9 o'clock at the home of Ross Taylor, who with his father and mother, were in Crown Point on a visit. The body will be sent home to Troy Center, Wis., for burial.

All of Gary that knew anything nbout the man hunt and its results, rejoiced yesterday afternoon when they saw Officer Chambers on his return from the hospital at Hammond. Mrs. Chambers and several of the neighbors had gone down to the Michigan Central train to meet him and although he walked but slowly, he deemed to stand the trip without serious consequences. It was a slight coIncident that Frank Martin, the other seriously injured man. should return yesterday also. Martin's recovery has been rapid and he went to work last evening. He spent his convalescent period down on the farm southwest of Lowell.
The O. E. S. will hold their regular meeting tomorrow night in Masonic hull. Several candidates will be initiated Into the order.
The wedding of Miss Carrie Compton and Robert DuSang of Muncie, will take place this evening at the bride's home In Olcott avenue.
