LATEST AlOVEM ENTS I IS INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
NEW YORK LETTEE. New York, July 20. Stocks ruled lower during the early part of the session. General soiling well distributed throughout the list brought about a decline of almost two points In Union Pacific; one and one-half in St. Paul; two in Smelters; ono In Atchison Common and one-half to three-quarters in thy less active specialties.' New York Central was again pressed for Hale. Constant offerings of the stock, which s thought to.be for the account of Insiders caused a decline from 113 to 11 2 Vs. The general Impression xrevails that the New York Central's report of earnings will be a very disappointing one and will only show earnings .slightly in excess of the requirements for dividends on the stock and Interest on the bonds. It has been observed by some well posted traders that Inside selling has been going on in New York Central for some time, the street, however, has held aloof from the shares. Too much mystery prevents the professional operator from taking a "flyer" In them. Amalgamated Copper declined a point and one-half on the renewal of the rumor that II. II. Rogers, the largest Individual holder of Copper, was dangerously ill. A speedy denial of the rumor was quickly sent from 26 Broadway; It declared it absolutely false and without foundation. The metal market continues to drop off fractionally from day to day both hero and In Europe. This, no doubt, caused the selling in Copper by room traders. Probabilities of further gold experts aided the declining tendency in a measure. The rise In the wheat market at Chicago enhanced the possibilities of further crop damage news to the spring wheat plant. This gave Northern Pacific, Northwestern and Great Northern a sluggish tendency and restrained bullish enthusiasm. Of the lowed priced shares Missouri Pacific, Missouri, Kansas and Texas, and Texas and Pacific, although dull, displayed a firmer tone and show fractional gains for the day. In the last hour of tho session general liquidation began in Union Pacific and Southern Pacific which dragged the entire market down. At the close points for the leading speculative favorites compared with Saturday's closing prices. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET

"V ith the exception of those reports and belief that the drenching rains in the winter wheat belt would delay marketing, most of the days news has been bearish,, the weather northwest, clear and cool following light general rains. Cash wheat was firm in all markets despite the increasing arrivals. There were lessening of cash wheat discounts

here and all offerings taken, the northwest trade generally bought wheat on opening dip in prices but sold out pietty generally on a later bulge. Late in the session the market turned quite weak, early buyers of the miscellaneous sort sold out. The failure of export business was a strong factor in depressing values finally. Cash sales 40,000. CORN Started weak on the fine weather the effectual breaking of the droughth southwest and a further cessation of rains in Iowa. Offerings proved lighter than expected. Commission houses beg-an. executing resting orders to buy and corn turned strong. Some little buying of September and selling by southwest and buying by cash houses. Cash corn in sample market was 14 to y2 cent higher. Clearances 142.000. OATS Have scored material advances. Continued heavy buying by tho samo side and had more influence on the market than any other ono factor. Crop reports were mostly favorable reporting light yields. We hear that a bull pool in Heading will get to work soon. It is worth taking a chance on. We understand that the market will boil next week; but don't get over enthusiastic nor over trade. Money will be cheap all through August, and the crop reports here are of the very best, especially on corn. WTe look for a continuation of steady, quiet markets, with stronger tendency, and would buy stocks on all reactions. C. F. I. showed some signs of life today; it might very easily run up sevserai points. We are told that .. Y. C. will cross 120 next week, but this drip has become stale. G. X. is good below 137. To give some idea of the money the iron people are making; I can tell you that Republic will show net profits of about four and a half millions for the past year; this is the largest in its history. The talk of passing the dividend on Erie 1st and 2nd preferred, I am told, is simply nonsense; there is no doubt of both being paid at the directors meeting next week. This story is always trotted out at this time of year. The market Is still quite professional and the floor traders are in and out on a big trade all the time. Commission house business is small but I look to see the whole market broaden out, and its a purchase, especially on soft spots. Southern Pacific on a 6 per cent, dividend basis will mean $7, 600,000 to Union Pacific. I feel that I can't be too bullish on both Southern and Union Pacific, in fact I think both of them a purchase right now; on any slight recession buy either or bot,h. Market was quiet and steady all day with somewhat stronger tendency in the Steel issues, SI. K. & T., and the American Cotton Oil and Virginia Chemical, otherwise fluctuations were fractional, and after the bank statement the market slowed off steadily but soon recovered Its loss. The bank statement showed a large increase of deposits and gained in cash about as expected, but owing to the lower call, money rates showed a reflection again of the disposition of the trust companies to reduce their loans which have to be taken over by the banks. Steel common is off and does not go up with the market on account of the Ore Handlers strike, which of course may extend; the opinion here is, it will soon be over, but on account of the strike the dividend will not be increased at this time, but the statement will show larger earnings than in the history of the company. Recent letters cover the situation from our point of view. Nearly every year stocks are a purchase some time during tho last week of July for an important August rise. It is possible there may be a set back before July 31st. We believe that conservative purchases made around the low prices of today will not hurt anyone. RAILROAD KARXIXGS. Road. L. & N.
