NEW YORK LETTER.

Yin-it. .liilv 26. The same oM

was brush. mI up, dusted and

brought forth to cause a slight advance Sri Brooklyn Rapid Transit. For the twentieth time within the last year talk of a dividend on the stock was indulged in. This perennial rumor is sprung in tin: street every time there is a short interest in the stork. It has the desired eflVct, causing th hears to cover their short contract. It is then put on the shelf for future use. Brooklyn was marked up to CO'.i. hut at the advanee sufheieiit long stock was dumped on the market to cause a reaction of a point. Some optimistic traders argue that the constant increasing travel to Coney Island should enhance tie; earning power of the Brooklyn system and the prospective dividends are- not as remote; as at this time a year ago. Selling pressure appeared in the Harriman stocks in a rather liberal volume. Union l'aeitio sold off a point from the opening figure; Southern Pacific declined about a half. It is said in the street inlluential interests are desirious of an upward swing in some of the Btocks, which have not advanced relatively as much as Atchison, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and the Hill

Broadway. The Erie issues were again

lower. The belief seems to be growing that the. dividend upon tho first preferred will he cut while that of the second preferred may be passed entirely. Tlie common stock declined a point from 24 to 23 U; the other two issues Buffered a slight recession In prices. More reassuring crop returns from the southwest gave an impetus to bulls upon Atchison. It reached the highest price on the present upward movement, selling at 03. Mr. Harrirnan is quoted as saying Southern Pacific will be put upon a 6 per cent basis at the directors' meeting next week. There, is no plausible reason why Southern Pacific should not sell as high as Atchison, both paying the same rate of interest. The market as a whole closed irregular with gains in some quarters and losses in others.

being general enough or well supported by buying orders. Cash houses gave the market a little support on the first break, but in some eases resold on a fractional rally later. Many professional longs of the larger class sold out today. Cash sales 20,000. CORN Cooler weather with rains in portions of Kansas over night resulted in a material decline in prices here, particularly for new crop months. Much corn bought on the hot weather scare in Kansas yesterday was sold at a sacrifice today. Reports regarding export call for corn are unanimous that it is for the present out of the question. Eastern demand today was fair, but by no means as much as should have been expected in view of the decline in futures. The chief cause of tiiis was the relative steadiness of the near months as compared to the distant deliveries and the fact that there is comparatively little corn available for immediate loading that has not already been placed. Southwestern markets fully reflected the improvement in the crop prospects there today. Cash sales 115,000, export thirteen loads.

OATS Unusually dull but the market was steadier than other gAilns. Unfavorable crop reports came all day from various sources, but they were not effective as they were mainly in line with previous claims. Larger producing sections of this state report harbesting in full blast and crop turning out spotted.

I'HODITB MAHKETS. Chicago, July 26. A stronger feeling existed in the poultry market, with hens c higher. Supplies were not so liberal as of late, while dressers were active buyers. There are a good many complaints being heard from butter dealers in regard to the quotation on extras in creameries. One wellposted dealer said: "We are getting 23?24c for firsts let alone extras and sales of the latter were made at 20c. to arrive In the next few days. Arrivals are light and consumptive demands is tho best noted for years during the summer season." For eggs the demand was active and yesterday's advanced prices were lirmly held. Berries were in light supply, with prices

generally a shade easier because of the poor condition of the offerings. Tomatoes were lower. Potato prices showed no change to speak of. Quotations on round lots ranged: Butter Receipts, 8.516 tubs. Buy the Hill stocks, don't neglect them In this market, they have had no advance yet. Buy Great Northern Ore, it will be on 4 per cent dividend basis before January.

There was a fair amount of commission business, the west generally buying stocks all around the room and being an important factor in tho leading railroad shares. Arbitrage brokers did little in the flrst hour, buying about 5,000 on balance.

Union Pacific showed early strength. The attempt to shake out a rather weak bull following attracted by Its activity and strength has been successful and specialists consider the technical position a great deal better than a week ego.

Buy this market on all recessions, and not on bulges. You cannot make a mistake, the crops and the weather are with you. This is the early stage of a bull market. After Union is 150 don't ask my opinion, I'm giving It to you now. I expect recessions but buy on them.

M. K. & T. will on Its annual statement shows about 30 per cent earned- on Its preferred stock on which it only pays 4 per cent, the controlling Interest is owned by Hill in Interest of the Burlington. As soon as the Burlington takes over M. K.. T. the common will pay 4 per cent. The earnings of 30 petcent this years compares with 12 per cent In 1906. The corn prospects and the cotton on the line of M. K. & T. are better than last year.

Joseph says: "The trend of prices will be towards moderate improvement. The question of increasing the dividend on Southern Pacific, so Kuhn-Loeb factions insist, is still in advance. The company's earnings fully 'warrant a larger distribution of profits among shareholders. Southern Pacific is an excellent investment. Atchison will soon cross 100. That the dlvedends on Erie stock will be declared at an early date. There is a big short Interest in Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Buy traction conservatively."

Indianapolis, Ind., July 26. When coordinate branches of the state government disagree, the courts may settle. Attorney-general James Bingham hag Opined that the two cent rate law does not apply to interurbans, an opinion that if adopted by the courts might lead to a declaration of unconstitutionality. exactly contrary. Ail of the members of this commission believe that the two cent law applies to the interurbans as well as to the steam roads, and to settle the matter suits will be instituted soon to compel all the lr.ti-rurbans to observe this law.
