NEW YOEK LETTER. New York, July 24. Southern Pacific was again tho leader In th; market. It had a perisational advance of over four points. The buying was even more aggressive than that of yesterday. Tlio Stre.-t to a man had the tip that tin) divider.. 1 would be inrrcasfi, l'rod lctions wery freely made cf placing tho stork ui-on a six Ir cent basis; sum enthusiasts going w far as to express the opinion that the dividend would be at the rate of 7 per cent. It Is pointed out by sorim shrewd traders that Southern l'a'-fric should tell as high A Atchison Conirnon which pays six per cent and is selling around 94. Although tho tono of the market continues dull, professional.-! and loom traders take advantage of any rood news which appears to hold up their particular specialties. Union 1'aelflc was marked up a. couple of points on tho same class of buying which was bo noticeable in Southern Racine. It is thought in the street that the Harrlman interests are. behind tho piostnt upward movement. Of tho industrial Rrnup, Copper and Smelters wero tho chief features. Each fccored a fair aln for tho day. It is said there is a large short interest throughout t'ue market generally. Today's action was a mild attempt to cause tho bears soma anxiety and make them cover at the higher quotations. Tho market as a whole scored fair pains throiiKhout the list with indications pointing to still further rallies tomorrow. MEW YORK STOCK

CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago, July 24. WHEAT W as again nervous und full of sharp changes within moderate limits but showed a much better undertone than yesterday. An opening dip of about lasted, less than five minutes the decline showing offerings were scanty and that holders had generally unloaded on yesterday's break. Tho weak start was on easier markets northwest Rtid lower cables. Weather northwest was warmer and more favorable for lust development than here-to-fore and it was not long before reports of black rust in Central Minnesota began coming Meanwhile there were better export bids reported at all points and the seaboard reported small sales of new red winter. Tho real influence in the trade, however, ha been the light sales of cash wheat by country. Acceptances havo bem light here and southwest. Cash sales 30.000, seaboard 12 loads. CORN Showed considerable strength today although the trade was not very larre. There was a little congestion showing in July which helped futures and cash grain as well. The Iowa weekly crop report however was senrational enough to induce considerable buying. It claimed more than double the area abandoned from iloods and weeds than the excess of acreage planted. OATS With the exception of considerable commission houses selling at the tart offerings of oats were limited except on strong spots. Reports concerning crops were mixed but there was considerable buying on the Iowa weekly report claiming losses by wind and flood. Southwestern Iowa grain

HEARD ON BOURSE. I think .igher. this Atchison Is going much The ter in market London. is getting a little betHalsted 6c Hodges ton from to To and lots ejf OuO now. id 2.500 Atchiare offering in The Lawson outbreak has merely c l ecked the advance, which will be resumed shortly. If stocks should bulge Tuesday, some further reaction may follow, but tSie trend will continue upward. If stocks should decline tomorrow, buy them. Northern Pacific was depressed by profit taking only; there is nothing to put it down on; S per cent, reasonably tiire for it at next meeting of the directors. Don't make any mistake, get aboard now and you will find it up ten points in a week. Union london depress Pacific was sold by traders and but they had hard work to it. The Ilarrinian people are extremely bullish on It and still talk 175. All the selling was well taken and the buying was far bettter than selling. I am personally very friendly to Union. Southern Pacific was only sold by traders. At the Waldorf last night the talk from some good people close to the inside was an increase of the dividend to 6 per cent, at the next meeting and that the stock would sell higher than Atchison. My friends say buy it on any little reaction. Buy Atchison; you will not be able to get it so cheap again for some time, the interests handling the stock say the corn crop on the line of this road never looked so good at this time of the year? Kansas will raise over CO millions wheat, and there is a big short interest in Atchison which will be surely driven in. If you want to make ten thousand dollars with a minimum of risk, I will show you how Just buy one thousand shares of either Denver, Colo. Southern, or M. K. & T. common, put ten points margin on It, and it will never be used up. Sell out at ten points profit and you will never see a loss, have seen the low price any of will sell at on March 14th last. You them I was with some of tho best peeple here last night; and the consensus of opinion is that you can buy good dividend paying stocks right now as the leturns they yield at this price make them cheap; the expectathan Is that tho Hill and Harrlman stocks and Atchison will lead the movement which Is not expected to lag to any extent for tho next 60 days. A very large private borrowing demand for U. S. Steel common is ptill reported, such demand has existed for some weeks, it Is known that one house which has loaned about 30,000 shares of the stock believing that the pressure would soon be lifted and tho stock advanced rather sharply called in Its shares, the expected turn of course has not come as yet and within the last few days the borrowing demand has been renewed on a large ecale., THE WATCH CAME BACK. Luck of a Man Who Met a in Park Row. Pickpocket "Hiving his watch stolen from him and offered for sale back to him in an hour was what happened to a friend of mine the other day when crowd? feathered at the newspaper bulletin boards waiting for news of the Thaw jury," said a citizen to a New York Sun reporter. "It happened this way: "An old friend of mine was standing among others waiting for news ot the Thaw jury when suddenly he felt a twitch at his watch pocket and his watch was gone. Not being sure ot his ground he kept his loss to himselt and walked away from the crowd. "After transa-ting a little business in the neighborhood he turned toward home. Remembering that he needed a drink he stepped into a saloon. "He was in the midst of his story, telling the sympathetic bartender ot his experience, with his back to the door, whna a voice back of him broke into tho conversation, ordered a drink and asked the drink mixer if he had any use for a watch, mentioning the fact that there was one to be had cheap. "The barkeeper, having my friend in mind, asked to see the watch and turned it over to my friend, who immediately recognized it as his. Turning around he inquired how much he asked for the timepiece. The thiet recognized his late victim and made a bolt for the door, taking good care to leave the watch behind. "Now being of a peaceful disposition ray friend let the matter go at that Can you beat it?" Society Playhouse. It is easier than it was to get out of one's own station in life both upward and downward. Birth and brilliance have always been admitted to the great playhouse of eociety, but to-day they take money at the doors. The Spectator. Mexico's "Death Column." Wry few people who fee and admire tho beautiful Chinese lilies know the reason why this particular flower Is held In such favor In tli3 orient. Thi3 Is the story of the origin as told by a Chinaman. Years and years ago a member of the celestial empire ha 3 two wives whom he loved dearly because each had borne him a son. While they were Etill lads the father died and in settling up the estate some difficulty was encountered, for tho man left hia heirs two pieces of land, one a strip lying in a fertile and beautiful valley, th other a email ribbon of land bordering the bed of a Earrow etream. The former land was known to grow anything the country produced, while the latter was counted utterly worthless. It was at first proposed that each of the two strips be divided in half and a section of each be given to the two heirs. But the mothers could not agree upon the division and it was filially arranged that one son should take tho rich land, while the other should take the sterile piece. The valley strip yielded bountiful harvests season after season and the rocky one gave nothing until one day the boy owner happened to notice a tiny white, eweet-ccented flower blooming among the rocks and after a careful study and examination It was found to be the only one of Its kind la China. The flower grew from a bulb and the boy discovered that these bulbs could be transplanted to similar rocky soil without destroying their gTov-.-th. Soon the bulbs were In gTeat demand and when it was learned that the flowers brought good luck to the owner of the plant the boy had all he could do to supply tho market From the sale of the bulbs he grew enormously wealthy, whil-? his brother never made more than a good out cf his valley property. living Expert Cigarette Makers.
