NEW YOEK LETTEE. New York, July 1G. The stock market at the dose tonight shows a gain in values of an average of about a point and a half although it was -an up-hill sanifi to establish the advance. Th'T were period of depression throughout the day when stocks declined a point htre and there, only to be followed by a quick rally again. Cnofficial announcement of another melon cutting by the directors of Great Northern rescued tho market from stagnation and brought about a rally in the general list. Union Pacific was about the chief feature of tho day. It scored an advance of three points, selling up from lil to 144. There evidently is a large short interest in the stock on account of the poor demand for the bond issue and the necessity of the underwriting syndicate to make a part payment on the bond. Fourteen million dollars will have to be paid by the syndicate, which will appear in this week's bank statement. All sorts of. conjectures as to the showing of that statement on Saturday are being made. Another break in the metal in New York caused the early weakness in the copper shares. Lake copper was offered one-half to three-quarters of a cent per pound cheaper than yesterday. Hoth Amalgamated Copper and Anaconda ifrH-iined all of tho early losses In the latter half of the session when the general market turned from weak to Rtrong. Manipulative tactics are in evidence In quite a number of stocks. One prominent ISostun trader sent out a warm tip to buy St. Paul for a quick advance. The stock advanced sluggishly from 1324 to 133?4l closing strong at the latter figure.

If Roosevelt and ills udviscrs tame down alter tnis liarrlumu report and Uou't have any more "brain storms" of Hie American Tobacco variety, you can bet dollars to cents this ma.rK.et will boost Itself. It is about time that sanity should return and let business have a chance.

will be in St. Paul and Union Pacific, Southern Pacifie, Pennsylvania, Steel, Copper and Smelters. There 13 always a big broad market for them the tip is "don't go short."

The report of the Inter-State Commerce Commission committee was very tame, but it did say that every road Harriman got hold of he made a great deal better road than it had been before, and he showed no disposition to sell out or let go or wreck the properties, in fact he wanted t buy more all the time.

Colorado Southern for the first week In July increases $47,575. This is one of the Ilawley roads, and Is one of the best of the cheap stocks. It Is making money, and will make good money for the investor; it Is paying 4 per cent on the first and second preferred and will pay 4 per cent on the common this fall.

I want to repeat again what I have been saying right along: "On all recessions, buy Union, Steel and St. Paul." You can't make a mistake; this is a bull market, It has only started. Tho public have no stocks. I can hardly make my statements too strong to you here in the early advance we have had In a bull market buy them.

London Americans closed on the curb strong and at best price3, the continued support of the New York market helping to maintain bullishness here. Pacific stocks were the leaders. Consols are up 1-8 per cent on a little easier feeling with regard to the money market but homo rails showed some recessions on discussion of the probable necessity of the road paying higher prices on new coal contracts. Although there continues to be talk

of a new Russian loan Reran was a buyer in government Issues and the

Chlcago, July 16. AVI I EAT The arrival of a few cars of new wheat from the southwest which was of a good quality gave the bears renewed courage in their position on tho market. Despite the copious rains throughout the northwest which it was feared might do considerable damage, wheat was weak throughout the session. There were a few spasmodic rallies of a quarter or three-eighths of a cent. They were, however, only temporary. At the final close of tho session to-

tiitf-ht thrt market presents a loss of

about a cent and one-half for the day. September wheat sold down from 93 to 82, closing at the lowest price of the day. Lack of export demand; constant increase In tho arrivals of new wif lower Liverpool markets and

aggressive selling pressure were the chief bearish factors which brought , about the reaction and closed the market soft. CORN Followed the example set by wheat pit. declining about three-quarters of a cent. One of the more prominent bulla who has conspicuous in all of the coarse grains of late, was a large seller of September and December, presumably it was long corn bought at higher prices. Good rains everywhere in the corn belt caused the weak tone. The reports of excessive moisture in Iowa were not given a great deal of consideration.
