Tho work of excavating for the Moody Kngk-hart building south of the Wabash on Hrondway lji-gan this morning. Tho dirt is being used for filling on Tenth avenue and IJroadway. Tho vitrified shale paving block to be used for the front of the intended Tost office building at liroadway and Seventh avenue, arrived today and was hauled down to the building site. Mr. Ilaworth, brother of Mrs. A. C. Jones of the Joti'-s Furnace company, who has been spending' a vacation here of several weeks, left Saturday evening for his home down in the state. Gordon Brothers of Chicago who ara building tho large double two-story .tore and dwelling building on liroadway south of the Pennsylvania tracks were out here this morning taking in tho progress being made on their buildings. Practically all of the brick to be used In the Jeffrey & Morgan building at the corner of Sixth avenue and liroadway has been delivered at the building site. The contractor expects to begin building operations at an early date. W. F. Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Brothers local real estate men, has rented a little country home near Chesterton and has moved out there for the summer at least. The train connections are so good that he operates better now than when living in Chicago. Word was received by the board of education this morning that their order of portable school houses was already on the way and should be here by the middle of August which would give ample time to arrange for their erection by the time school begins. Chief of Police Martin sustained a badly sprained ankle last evening While taking part in the chase aftur Wallace. Max Bernstein of Whiting spent this afternoon here looking after business interests. He has practically completed fy' tho building for which lie let a contract some time ago and expects to be ready to occupy it by the middle of August. The building is on BroadWay just south of Fourteenth avenue.
Crawford, tho man who was confined 'here several days with a bad case of delirium tremens, died yesterday morning at Ottawa, 111., to which place 1.1s brother took him from here. Tho local police department received an inquiry this morning relative to such information as they might possess regarding his movements immediately preceding his illness. The inquiry camo from Crawford's father who Wrote concerning the death. Contractor Paino began this morning the putting on of the ceiling in tho Tischbein building just north of Klghth avenue on Broadway. This marks the beginning of the completion of the block of buildings which he has had under construction for a short while. Tischbein expects to be able to occupy Ms building by the llrst of August. He Will move his entire stock of harness, harness making tools, repair outfits, etc.. Into the new quarters at tho earliest opportunity. Deputy Sheriff Trost of Hammond, spent all day in this vicinity with officers from Fast Chicago and Hammond scouring the country for a man Who did some shooting at Pine last evening or early this morning. The man had broken into a camp and stolen some goods and was detected just as ho was leaving. The robber turned upon his discoverer and lired at him with the shot gun he carried. The load struck the man in the hand literally blowing tho hand off. Sheriff Carter came over from Crown Toint in his car, but up to a late hour this afternoon no trace had been found of the miscreant. Keckersen of Chicago is visiting with Clark friends for a fewdays. Mr. Junjohann and family and brother of Chicago, visited with friends here recently. Six young people had a narrow escape from drowning by trying to get into a boat built to hold but three people. As soon as they got in the boat tipped over. Some young men who were present went to the rescue and aside from the unpleasantness of the ducking, no one was hurt. LANSING NEWS George Vansteenburg spent Sunday in Chicago. Miss Alice, leave today for Kansas to settle up the estate of Mr. Garhardt's other daughter, who died there a few weeks ago. The ladles of the Catholic church will hold a lawn social at the church Thursday afternoon and evening. Coffee, sandwiches, ice cream and cake will be served. It took thirteen innings yesterday to decide the winners between the Maroons and the Lake Citys of Chicago, the final score being 4 to 3 in favor of the visiting team. A carpenter in the employ of Stewart and Bowers, dropped dead of heart failure while at work here yesterday, lie was removed from the building to the morgue and was later taken to his home in Whiting. Miss Madeline Liable, sister of Judge Liable of this place, is 'here visiting with friends and relatives for a time. Miss Liable taught school in Lake county for several years, but is now a teacher in Nebraska. She thinks the schools there compare favorably with those in our own state, although their school system is somewhat different.
