BOY IS ARRESTED; BRAND LARCENY Sam Guthman Bound Over to Supreme Court for Stealing Money. The binding over of Sam Guthman to the fall term of the superior court at Hammond this morning by Judge Fitzgerald was the climax to a piece of neat detective work on the part of Chief Martin. Guthman is a dapper, pleasant looking 19-year-old lad who has been with the Union News company here, and was also soliciting subscriptions, for a few days, for the Gary Tribune. He was staying- at I. F. Kohn's on Seventh avenue and Adams street. Several days ago K.ohn suspected that some one was absorbing part of the contents of his cash box and his little daughter having observed Guthman enter the room in a strange manner. Ko-hn went to the chief. Martin took the matter in hand and with the help of some marked bills properly used and a little watching, b.-came convinced that Guthman was getting the money. This morning Guthman was picked up by Officer Klop, who was instructed to get him if anything further developed. When first arrested lie denied the charges, but when a search was started he broke down and admitted having stolen $2S. The bond was fixed at $500. His father will probably put up the bond, he living in Chicago. This is the first grand larceny case to go up from the local courts. The lad has been roughing it for all of his life, since he was five years old and seems to have been a victim of untoward circumstances. HOLMES IS A VICTIM OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY. Officer Klop? Jump Out of lied and In Uniform of Pajamas Tnckleit Intruder AVho Proves to Be His Friend. Charles J. Holmes and daughter, Grace, visited here last evening, returning to their home at Dowel 1 this morning. Mr. Holmes and Officer Klopf will probably recall his visit whenever the one hears the other's name mentioned. It seems that the people living hi the Hodges building at Fifth avenue and Virginia street are bothered early in the morning by foreigners who try to get into the grocery on the main floor. Not finding the store open, they go upstairs to find the owners and disturb the people there, among them the Klopfs and Martins. This morning it chanced that Mr. Holmes called early to get Miss Holmes, who stayed with the Martins last evening. Officer Klopf, in a pair of brilliant pajamas, half asleep, thought another foreigner was corning when he Jieard the approach in the hall and. jumping out of bed, jerked open the the door, grabbed the man without looking and asked the intruder what lie was doing there. After the first shock Mr. Holmes started to explain, when Officer Klopf took in the situation and his apologies were as profound as his attack was vigorous. The officer now has a standing invitation to spend a few days on the farm, and Mr. Holmes has been given carte blanche at the desk sergeants. GAVIT HAS ACCEPTED THE GARY FRANCHISE. Attorney Frank Gavit of Whiting has formally accepted the franchise which was awarded to him by the board of trustees of Gary some time ago in accordance with the provision xequlring him to file his acceptance within ten days. Mr. Gavit's bond will not have to be filed for thirty days, but will probably be filed at the next meeting of the board. The- statement has been made that Trustee Sears placed the motion to give Mr. Gavit the franchise. This Mr. years denies and says that Trustee Knotts made the motion while he seconded It.
