He intimated that he and Mr. Knglehart his partner might build on their seventy-five feet on the crrner of Broadway and TVnth avenue. They have several attractive offers to sell but are loatlt to part with their fortunate purchase. Frank Huhinger, all around man for the Steel company on the North Side, has rented the basement under the Tischbein building in which he will open a restaurant as noon as the building is completed. Ho expects to secure the next basement to the north of the one he has alrady rented in whh he will put in a bowling alley and billiard room. Gary's two first "Vags" were prosecuted here yesterday morning ami were found guilty and lined. The police had become tired of chasing the loafers and run In two particularly typical sreclmens the evening before. Not having tho necessary wherewithal to pay the fine they accompanied Officer Newman to Crown Point yesterday morning. They gave their names as William Danaher and John McGrath. Rumor is current? about town that several buildings that were to be built along Ilroadway have been called off until the backers can determine whether the new franchise for the traction lines will be carried out. They had planned with the belief that the Gary & Hammond Traction company would be the successful bidder. Not knowing tho backing of the man who got it .they are inclined to hesitate until they are shown. Division Superintendent Wilson and his assistant Mr. Smith and their families stopped here Sunday afternoon while on their way through on the inspection special. The constant changes that are going on here keep both Mr. Wilson and Mr. Smith on this part of the division a great deal of the time. Several new men have recently been no'dd to the Lake Shore's local force but It is inadequate as yet to take care of the business without burdening the men. The l-'alkenau baseball team again carried off the honors last Sunday defeating the Iron workers and Engineers in a hard fought game. Captain Smith of the Kalkenaus is getting much deserved credit for the showing bis team is making. Some allowance should probably be made, however, for the accident to the iron workers captain, Glen, who was disabled and could not take part. He was thrown from a horse several days ago and is carrying his arm In a sling. The Falkenaus are to play Whiting in the Oil City on the 21st. The Gary Construction company is erecting a large material shed and yard on Its property just north of the Michigan Central near Washington street. The Gary Supply company is getting in a large line of equipment for its business. It has already received a number of car loads of material for the Broadway contract, but is unable to use any of It on account of the delay on the part of the graders in getting any of Broadway ready for paving. The second of the large concrete mixers was unloaded yesterday and taken to the south part of the proposed improvement. ' VALPARAISO NEWS Mayor W. H. Williams has returned from Battle Creek, Mich. W. Warden of LiPorte, representing the New York-Chicago Air line, were in town yesterday. Tom Beerr.er was arrested Sunday night for resisting an officer. He was given a hearing last night before Mayor Williams and fined 55 and costs. Mrs. Edwin Forbes, who has been visiting with her husband in West Pullman, 111., has returned home, accompanied by her sister. Miss Mary Heegar, and mother, Mrs. Kowehs, who will visit a few days. Mrs, S. J. Summer han gone to Indianapolis where she and her husband Joined the Rapier commandery. Knights Templars of that city in its journey to Saratoga Springs, N. Y to attend the conclave of tho Knights Templars in session there. RENSSELAER NEWS J. J. Montgomery made a business trip to Chicago yesterday. Howard Mills left Saturday Plata, Mo., to visit relatives. for La Merle Benjamin has gone to San Diego, Cah, for several months' stay. Dr. Crowell and wife of Monticello spent Sunday with their son, Dick Crowell, and wife. Mrs. Mary E. Drake has returned from Chicago, where she has been visiting with her mother. About 9:30 o'clock Mr. and Mrs. Wayne retired, but they had no sooner retired when Mr. Demsey. who it seems had indulged quite freely in the amber fluid, was seized with a sudden desire to smash everything in sight. Mr. Wayne got up and tried to quiet him, but he turned on him and battered him up quite badly.
