NEW YORK LETTEE. New YorY, June 17. The stock market opened weak and a trifle lower. Trading was of more or less professional character with selling pressure limited, although aggressive. Copper suffered a decline of about a point during the first hour. Union Pacific, St. Paul, Sugar, Reading, Atchison and in fact the entire speculative, favorites recorded declines varying from onequarter of a point to a full point. Sentiment, however, after the first hour seemed to become more cheerful ami prices responded readily to a little short covering combined with investment and foreign buying. Prices regained their early hisses and scored fair gains in several of the more prominent railroad shares and industrial stocks. The news in a general way rather reflected a more optomistie feeling In Wall street. The advance In the grain market was merely construed as speculative, while the, belief prevails in New York and around the exchange that the country will raise ample crops for home consumption and plenty for foreign requirements. The Union Pacific new issue of stock in the way of "rights" were admitted to the quotation list of the exchange this morning. They are not, however, figured to be worth very much, but the action of the Union Pacific stock in today's market shows conclusively that the isue was received with approval by the trade generally. The foreign situation In so far as Berlin, St. Petersburg and Paris are concerned remains quiet and unchanged. The entire market closed slightly higher with indications pointing to

nothing but a professional affair for the present.

The money situation Is more menacing. It influences us to recommend that you modify your market position to a strict . trading attitude, for the, present. In this observation it is necessary to use the stop order in both buying or selling. Wo would not buy except on weakness after a recession and we would not sell except on rallies. In either case the wait for profits should not be long. Owing to the great decline and the fact that any attempt at a bear market by the professionals from these levels would not meet with much success. We are inclined to lean toward the long side, hoping for betterment later. Conservative operations will repay well for the present.

CHICAGO LETTER. Chicago, June 17. WHEAT A varigrated number of reports were dished up today to influence the wide fluctuations in the wheat pit. To begin with, prices opened a shade lower based upon a slightly lower market from Liverpool; larger receipts than expected and a little outside selling for the account of disappointed bulls. The dip in prices, however, was only momentarily. The absorbing power in the market was such that the of

ferings were soon taken care of and prices began to respond to the aggressive buying. The chief factor in causing the advance was the hot winds in Kansas which it is said are doing considerable damage to the wheat crop owing to its coming so soon after the cold weather. The crop being physically unable to withstand the sudden change. Ohio also had its quota of bull news in the way of the heads being short and blighted. The crop in the northwest is said to be suffering from smut. The next thing we hear from that section will be the black rust. With the crop killers working

overtime we will have to raise the

wheat crop in a steam heated flat. The market closed strong showing a gain of about two cents a bushel for July, September and December. CORN Advanced about five-eighths of a cent upon strong speculative buying. The same crop influences beiasr at

The continutlon of liouidtlon this

morning and renewed activity on the part of the bearish traders gave the market an appearance -of weakness during the first hour of trading this morning. On the decline there was enough short covering to check the bearish enthusiasm for a while, and the market turned dull and steady. The dullness continued until the close, but the selling pressure was removed and stocks rallied fractionally and irregularly on very moderate buying. And further liquidation is liable to force prices considerably lower on account of the support of the shorts having been largely removed. There is no tendency to rally just now and, with the market in the hands of the professionals and the bulls apathetic, it appears reasonable to suppose that prices will fade away still more. The weakness in grains has had no appreciable influence upon the market, although it would only be natural for the prices of stocks to harden in proportion. Believe stocks are a sale on the hard spots.

Most Lasting Monument. If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble to dust. But if we work on men's minds, if we impress on them high principles, noble aims and love for their fellow-men, we engrave on those tablets something no time can ever efface. Chesterfield.
