TURNS ON PEACEMAKERS. W. Farrell Threaten to Shoot I. Toth and Friend Intercede Only to Set Into Trouble. Will Farrell, a foreman for the Illinois Improvement and Ballast company, while badly intoxicated last evening, pulled a revolver and pointed it at Daniel Toth. proprietor of one of the saloons on Broadway and announced his intention of letting daylight through the proprietor. His friends succeeded in getting him to put up the pun, but had hardly done so before he turned on them, and one of his men offered to assist him. Warrants wore sworn out for the arrest of the men and they were picked up by the officers shortly after the occurrence. The charges preferred were fdmply assault, although some felt that they should have been stronger. The men pleaded guilty and paid their fines.

Two drunken foreigners swore out warrants late last evening against Susie Johnson, a young colored woman, charging her with stealing money from one of tho men in Pet rovicz's saloon on South Washington street. Slio stoutly denied the charge, but offered to stand trial this morning and declared that nhe had a number of inlluontial friends, including the mayor of Joliet, who was a personal friend f hers, who would willingly go her bond. Bond was secured and she was released, appearing this morning for trial with half of the colored community accompanying her ready to testify as to her honesty. Prosecutor Boone soon saw that the evidence at hand could not prove the charge and he nolle pressed the case.

He and 15. F. Riddle of Milwaukee, who is associated with him, will install equipment for the finest five chair shop in this part of tho state in a large room facing on Eighth avenue. Bongmire has taken care of the entire population with his shops, having two or three in operation in different parts of town.
The Moo building is the first one to be equipped with electric lights. I.rs. Walsh & Templin, who have quarters on the second l'.oor, are the gainers also. The lights were used for domestic purposes in Gary for the first time last evening. Electricity for lighting lias been in use for several weeks on the nortli side in some of the plants, but none of the power lias been transmitted across the river as yet.
Harry Graves has gone to Hammond where he lias accepted a position with the Chicago Telephone company. J. A. Dnrnaha has been awarded the contract to furnish coal for the court house, jail and county farm.

Jacob Hahn of HessviHe met instantaneous death at McCook, 111., yesterday about 10 o'clock. Mr. Hahn and his brother-in-law, Hans Ericks, both car repairers employed at Gibson, were called to McCook with the wrecking crew to clear up a wreck on the Michigan Central railroad. While at this work a car fell on him, crushing his head. Hans Ericks pulled him from under the car but found that life had lied. The remains were taken to a Hammond morgu. and brought to Osborn today on tho 10:14 suburban. Mr. Hahn was 32 years old. He leaves a young widow and two children, ages two and a half years and six months respectively, besides a father, three sisters, Mesdames August Fullgraf and John Wilson of HessviHe, Mrs. Randon of Highlands, and a half brother, Herman Hoffman of Hammond. The funeral will be held in Banslng Sunday.

Deputy Coroner llouk was called to
Cedar Lake yesterday afternoon where
he will hold an inquest over the body of Miss Minnie Kiederer, drowned last Sunday by the capsizing of a sail boat. The body was recovered yesterday at 3 o'clock.

While gathering wild flowers a few
days ago, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Black had the misfortune to come in contact with some poison ivy, poisoning their hands
and face. Mrs. Black has suffered
greatly from the misfortune.
William Diak will leave tomorrow for
Montreal, Canada, where he will be
married June 2S. Mr. Diak is a clerk
at the U. S. Refining company and will
live in Hammond for a while on hhs

A special meeting was held last night
at Masonic ball for the purpose of ini
tiating sixteen candidates into the or
der. About one hundred and fifty per
sons were present from South Chicago, Hammond, Whiting, Chicago and Chesterton and a general good time was
enjoyed by all. After the work of the
evening was ended a delicious luncli was served and a social hour spent. Mesdames Smiley, Smalley, Stewart, Bash, Miss Fay and Mr. Carl Smiley, were among the Hammond folks who visited the Chapter here last night.
Mrs. Ray Barlow entertained the Auxiliary of the O. E. S. yesterday afternoon and in connection with this gave a shower for Miss Grace Moss. About thirty ladies were present. Pedro was played the prizes being won by Mesdames Bowers, Alyea, Curry and Phillips. Miss Mass was the recepient of many useful and beautiful gifts. Mrs. Sybil Clapper made the presentation speech to which Miss Moss responded gracefully. After a dainty lunch the ladies adjourned to meet the next time with Mrs. John Bowers at Indiana Harbor.
