ABANDON CLUBHOUSE. Storekeeper Has Moved Into Quartern Near the Machine Shop. M. A. Caldwell, storekeeper for the Steel company, finished his moving yesterday into the storekeepers' quarters Just south of the machine shop yesterday. Ills removal was the last of the moving from the office quarters alongthe lake. These quarters In the old clubhouses have been the local liom of the Indiana Steel company since the Inception of the work over a year ago and the chance to move was haled with delight by the office men who have been cramped for room for a long time. OFFICE BUILDING OCCUPIED. Superintendent Gleanon and Force Milken I'ne of Quartern In lianemeut. Superintendent Gleason and his entire force are now occupying the basement fioo of the office building just north of the river. They completed moving in yesterday and will occupy the basement until the upper three floors are ready for occupancy. An Idea of the size of the building may be gained by the fact that the entire engineering force and the force employed in the auditing department oc4 cupy but half of the basement floor. Laborer Is Injured. Jonh Darcy, while crawling over the bumpers on a freigtit car late last night following his boss, Joes Brady, fell and cut himself badly about the head. Night watchman Kennedy of the Falkenau company, near whose beat the accident occurred, discovered the two men and brought Darcy over to Dr. Walsh's after tying up the wounded head as best he could. Both of the men were badly under the influence of liquor. The doctor dressed the wounds which proved to be less dangerous than first appearances led him to believe. Wreck Victims Sent Away. Undertaker Jones shipped the remains of the three men who were killed on a work train last evening, to Chicago. Two of the men were Irishmen, Pat Henry and Tim Koch, both from Chicago. Henry was a married man. leav!nga wife and three children. Tie had a brother working here who looked after the remains today. Coroner Hosklns held the inquest this morning. Police Hold Shoot. The police force held Its reguluar monthly shoot this afternoon. Officer Law made good his threat made some jtlme ago that he would carry the gold medal within six months and has already developed a slight tendency to relieve the strain on his coat by unbuttoning It. Father Jansen of Ilobart spent part of today here looking after his people's interests. Counsel Ilaynle of Chicago stopped off between trains this morning to look after local Interests. The Misses Sadie and Molly Fahey of Milwaukee, sisters of Mrs. Kd Klopf, are visiting in Gary for a short time. T. E. Knotts was summoned as a witness in a lawsuit at Valparaiso today and accompanied his son, Frank, thither. Frank intends to take up work at the university during the summer. Two of the local teachers. Miss GibBon and Mr. Watts have each gone to Valparaiso to take further preparatory work and expect to complete their courses in time to resume work in the local schools in the fall. The contract for the Brennan building at the corner of Broadway and Sixth avenue, was awarded to a Hammond contractor. He has already commenced excavating for the structure, Jacob Wiker of Hammond doing the latter part of the work. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Itev. Bruce Brown. The county commissioners yesterday afternoon accepted the material being used by Conover & Tabor in the construction of the Powers and Lemster roads. There was some question as to the material being used. The Watts vs. Watts divorce case from Lake county was docketed in the Porter superior court yesterdav. The couple were married in Valparaiso in 1SS0 and have since resided In Ilobart. The wife alleges cruel and inhuman treatment. The case of Otto C. Borman vs. Edward Levy is on trial in the circuit court. This case is from Lake county and is a suit to recover damages for failure to convey certain real estate. The plaintiff is a resident of Toleston and is said to be the heaviest man in Lake county, weighing 350 pounds. WHEELER NEWS Mrs. H. W. Abbott was a Valparaiso visitor Wednesday. D. L. Richmons was in Chicago on business yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. George Robinson transacted business in Ilobart Wednesday. Tatrlck Gllmartln is still detained from work on account of rheumatism. During the storm Wednesday morning lightning struck and killed several cattle in the vicinity of Ilobart. S. The house and windmill of William Smalley, who lives near Liverpool were burned to the ground Tuesday night Cause of fire unknown. Miss Laura Schuknecht, who went to Pasadena, Cal. about a year ago with the Carpenter family, came home yesterday to see her sister, Mrs. Ed Fiester, who is seriously ill. The seventh annual banquet of the Hobart township high school alumni association was held Tuesday evening at the Hobart house. Sixty-one members and guests were present. Miss Bertha Halsted went to Lafayette today where she will make a short visit. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Larsh went to Kokomo today for a few days visit with friends. Warren Griggs returned to Chicago today, after a short visit with his father. Mrs. Vernono Hopkins went to Wabash today for a short visit with her parents. Mrs. Barkley and son. Earl, have returned from several months stay in Colorado. Miss Julia Leopold went to Hammond today for a short visit with her sister, Mrs. Leo Wolf. Council met at an adjourned regular meeting last night for the purpose of receiving bids for street and. sewer contracts at Indiana Harbor. Mr. Lavene secured the contract for putting in an lS-inch sewer in Block avenue and Washington street and paving contract in Beoder street. Elm and Cedar streets were let to Layton & Heintz. The matter of granting liquor license to a south side saloonkeeper was granted after a heated discussion. The Junk Brewing company was granted permission to build a frame office building in Watling street. They have tried for some time to get this permit but were prevented from doing so on account of the location being in the first district. Last night after a heated argument the brewery won out. CO. A meeting will be held at the Lowell National bank tonight. This is a movement in the right direction as it will give the proprietors and clerks a much needed rest and much more time to themselves. Auditor Johnson went to Munster yesterday on official business. The Modern Woodmen will hold their annual memorial services next Sunday. "On the Bridge at Midnight" will appear in Central music hall next Saturday night. The town trustees have ordered a cement curb put in on South Main street and East Joliet streets. The district convention of the Christian Endeavor convened yesterday In the parlors of the First Presbyterian church. Postal Inspector Ela is here today going over the seven rural routes out of Crown Point In company with Postmaster Farley. James Patton of Winfield, was here yesterday and reported that work was progressing nicely on the Winfield township gravel road. Itev. E. A. LaFontaine, superintendent of the Catholic schools of the Fort Wayne diocese, was here yesterday afternoon Inspecting St. Mary's parochial schools. The firemen have appointed a committee composed of Messrs. Ed Muzzall, Ed Huber and Frank J. Hack to arrange for a big Fourth of July celebration in Crown Point. The celebration will take place at the fair grounds. O. M. Cowlen, a brakeman on the Panhandle, was seriously injured at Hebron yesterday by having his hand caught in a coupling. The right hand and fore-arm were badly crushed. He was brought here for surgical attendance, after which he was returned to his home in Logansport.
