LATEST MOVEMENTS I IV INDUSTRIAL CENTERS,
NEW YORK LETTER. New York, May 2 3. The stock market recorded a rapid recovery from the weakness which was so apparent at the close of the session last evening. The volume of business transacted was rather large considering the fact that there will be no session tomorrow and quite a few traders have left the street until Friday. Union Pacific, St. Paul, Smelters, Southern Pacific, the Hill shares and Canadian Pacific were the active issues which enjoyed the most prominence and scored the largest advances of the day. Union Pacific continues the undoubted leader in the market. It sold ex-dividend today 2 V2 per cent., which was taken off the Initial transaction, this was quickly regained, the market advancing from an opening at 132 up to 135. St. Paul also had a very strong undertone, showing a gain of about two points from the early prices prevailing at the opening. The news upon the whole was about neutral. Announcement of the shipment of about three million gold caused a weak spell which brought about a slight reaction in the market. This reaction was of small consequence, however, it was observable by some shrewd traders that the market was heavily oversold. These traders started a bull campaign against the shorts which had the effect of causing a stampede in one or two issues and giving the market an appearance of buoyancy. The street had the bull tip on the president's speech and it was said he would dwell very lightly upon railroad legislation and matters relating to railways. This was the stimulus which gave the bulls confidence in their position and closing the market strong at about the best prices of the session. NEW YORK STOCK MARKET Descp. Chicago. May 29. WHEAT Had a weak spell at the opening on account of the generous rains throughout the southwest and predictions for further moisture tomorrow. The opening prices, however, were the lowest of the session. There were numerous orders in the pit to buy wheat both for the account of the outside public and professional operators. Traders who sold out on the bulge during the early part of the week were anxious buyers of July wheat around 98 cents. The principal selling emanated from the northwest where the crop conditions have assumed a more favorable aspect. The cash demand today was only fair; sales to the seaboard about 100,000. The speculative market had a range of two cents for the active futures, the closing prices showing a gain of about a cent a bushel over the opening figures. CORN Ruled strong and acted independently of any of the other markets. Early prices were from three-eighths to a half a cent higher for all of the active futures. The buying power seemed more aggressive than heretofore. There was nothing in the news to help the bull party, yet they maintained a strong market by sheer force. Cash demand and cash sales practically nothing. Country offerings dwindling down to a few scattered cars here and there. Foreign markets unchanged from yesterday. The close tonight shows a fair gain over last evening's final sales with the undertone of the market very strong. OATS A strong, higher market throughout the session with the July option the prominent feature. This future Bcored an advance of almost two cents a bushel on vigorous buying by shorts who oversold the market earlier in the week. The strength In the July reflected a sympathetic advance in the deferred itionth.PRODUCE MAnHET. Chicago, May 29. Twelve cars of strawberries were on the market today. These were all from Illinois. The quality was better than for some time past and sold readily at yesterday's prices. A better feeling existed in the poultry market. Supplies were light and the demand only fair and recently advanced prices were firmly held. Veal was firm. Butter sold well at unchanged prices. Potatoes were scarce; market had a strong undertone. Official last week decrease 296,000 bu., last year Dec. 3,073,000. While It now appears that no gold at all may be shipped on Thursday, the situation might change at any moment. Even with the allowance of interest in transit by the Bank of France and other facilities afforded, there has been but slight profit In exports up to this time. T. A. Mclntyre and Co. Confidence has been so badly shaken in the future stability of both the bond and the stock market that there is really not enough buying power to absorb the current offerings. It is for these reasons that we are anticipating a continuation of unsettled conditions and the probability that still lower prices will prevail.
