REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS
NEW YORK IETXEE. New York, May 2S. The stock market opened irregular with declines In some quarters while gains were recorded in others. The railroad shares showed a disposition to rally after the opening flurry. Union Pacific advanced from 132 to 131 "i; St. Paul from
123"4 to 1254; Northern Pacific, New York Central, Great Northern, Pennsylvania and the balance of the higher priced shares scored advances varying from one-half to one per cent.
More cheerful crop news from the west and northwest; the belief growing that the gold exports would not exceed four or five millions and a rather oversold market caused the slight advance throughout the list. President Ripley's views upon the crop situation in Kansas where the Atchison road traverses was more reassuring and caused a spurt in the price of Atchison shares from 86 to S8. It is believed in the street that President Roosevelt's speech Thursday will not be radical in regards to railroad legislation. It is, however, not known just what he will say. If the
previous speech at Jamestown is any
criterion, it may be as drastic as some
of his nrevious utterances upon the
same subject. Its effect upon the market, however, will only be sentimental
and of short duration. In the last hour of the session a sell ing wave appeared in Copper and Ana
cunilr ' hii-h dra treed the balance of
the market down with It. A break in the metal market in London and ru
mors that copper was being offered by
some of the larger individual produc
ers under the quotations prevailing up
on the metal exchange was assigned as
the reason for the weakness. 1 he en-
tiro market closed irregular with a
weak undertone.
in their crop conditions. The market closed rather weak at the decline. CORN Ruled weak In sympathy with wheat. Iiack of country offerings and a break of a cent a bushel in the sample market were the principal disturbing factors. Cash sales were large, 240, 000 bu. reported sold to exporters. Tbe speculative market had a range of only about five-eighths of a cent for
the day, closing steady with a slight
loss compared with yesterday.
OATS: Weak and lower throughout
the session with very little rallying
power. ijiquiaanon oy me longn in July and September continued upon a
rather large scale with new buying
orders greatly diminished. Cash sales
were 125.000 bu. The market closed weak with a Joss of about five eighths
or a cent lor me oay.

We advise the purchase of good rail
road stocks and Amalgamated Copper
on weak spots at the opening today for good turns. Saturday's decline was engineered by floor traders and brought
out no new liquidation of consequence while the influence of the excellent
bank statement should lead to a quick recovery. With the holiday breaking into the week we do not look for a nntl..,l.lir otivo market at once OT
anv movement of general importance
but many of the good stocks are on -basis that recommends them for per
manent investment. Louisville & Atlantic Coast Line, Southern and Union Pacific, Great Northern and Northern Pacific, Atchison and P,altlmore & Ohio are decidedly in this class and should be bought on all breaks. The bears have always the Erles and Southern Railway shares at their service and to a lesser extent Steel common and New York Central. But more resistance to bearish attacks is manifest now In high rrvnAn' ctiritlf9 e-pTierallV than for
5t auo ....... 0 some time. Evidently accumulation Is going on or inside interests among the leading rails and indeed a better sentiment prevails among the industrials as account is taken of the fact that strength in the grain markets is due even more to conditions abroad
than at home and that wnn lair tiu
returns our much heralded business re
action may turn out a temporary at
fair after all. M. K. & T. earnings are
increasing at the rate of 40 to 50 per cent. The preferred is a most excellent
nvestment and the common Is .a good
peculation as are most of the south
western issues.

Chicago, May 2S. WHEAT Has been on the down grade ever since the opening of the session. The initial
rrices were about the highest of the
day. A general clearing up In weather
conditions both in the south and north
west combined with realizing sales by
the longs and the belief becoming more
that prices should have a
reaction. These factors caused a gen
eral selling movement in the market. There was a sprinkling of buying or
ders discernible at the decline. ine market is more or less of a weather affair and should the present seasonable weather prevail during the week, prices undoubtedly will see some further recessions. The foreign news pertaining to the crop was also a little more cheerful. Good rains throughout the continent being very beneficial to the growing crop. Cremation of the Dead. Cremation i3 one of tbe most ancient methods of disposing of the dead. Before the beginning of the Christian era, cremation prevailed among all
civilized nations, except the Jews, Chi
nese and Egyptians. Later, however, this form gave way to earth burial.
Cremation has had a revival during
the last few years, and from one ere
matory in existence in I8S0, there were oyer 50 in 1890, and since then
others have been added to the list
each year. Cremation is common In
Japan, where 47 per cent, of the dead are incinerated. The first crematory
in the United States was built at
Washington, Pa., in 1876, by Dr. Le Moyne! and the first incineration there
was that of the body of Baron de Palm, which took place in December of the same year. This was the only

Bible Drove Him to Drink.
Abram B. Cartridge, very drunk, was
picked up by the police force from the
trutter on South Main street, says a
dispatch from Waterbury, Conn. In bis hand he clasped an open Bible and
he spoke to the officers strangely in
Scriptural phrases. In court Abram
said that study of the Bible had driven
him to his fall.
"It i3 so full of Inconsistencies," ho
declared. "I learn its truths and am UDlifted then I discover that its
truths are false, and I sink to the depths. How can I deliberately stay
in my right mind, judge, when I find
that the foundation of salvation is
builded on sand, and good liquor, whirr, will make me forget it. Is so
cheat) ?"
Cartridee was sent to jail for 30
