All is quiet on the Grand Calumet, to paraphrase the words of the immortal McCIellan. There Is nothing doing in tho City of Traverse, in spite of the pronouncement of Chief of Police Shippy that there is nothing in the vagrancy laws of the state of Illinois to prevent a man boarding a train for South Chicago and taking a boat ride. So the cause for the Inactivity of the celebrated floating poolroom must be sought elsewhere. Rumor declares that tho real cause of the inactivity comes from within and out from without. Purser Sturgeon declares that the owners of the City of Traverse do not fear the police. Indeed, according to the Jolly purser. Chief Shippy and Harry Perry are bosom friends.
But thero is no mistaking the fact that the grand old battleship is froze
to the dock and will stay there, for all
the sports will be advantaged by her
movements, for from one to three weeks longer. The real trouble is said to be
a rupture between "Bud" White and
Harry Perry, that is declared to date
from tho Dearborn Park fiasco of sev
eral weeks ago. How true this is can
only be conjectured, as there is an ap
parent outward unanimity of action and
interest in the Perry-White syndicate. Last night all provisions, wet and
dry, that were stored aboard the City of Traverse last Wednesday afternoon
were taken ashore and returned to the
purveyors who sold them. The unmelted portion of two tons of ice was
also sent back to the icehouse and the
cash register that records transactions at the two bars on the boat was
shlDDed to tha city. The fires were
banked and Purser Sturgeon and Cap
tain Jones took their departure. About forty pies that had become to passe
to send back to the bakery were dis
tributed among loungers on the wharf and the kids and coal heavers of the vicinity had an impromptu picnic. Only the engineer and a few watchmen remain aboard the boat and there is
wailing and gnashing of teeth among
the disappointed sports.

, Stanley Leszewski, who demanded $3
as witness fees before he would appear in a police case in the South Chicago
city court, was ordered locked up to
iday by Judge Glrten until he disgorged
the money. Leszewski was a witness to an assault by a Polish boy who
broke tho nose of another boy with a
blow from a stick. He told the par

imbursed for the time lost, which would
bo about $5. When the case was con

as he was only paid for coming once.
Justico Glrten questioned Leszewski and brought out the story. When the man acknowledged that he had taken tha $3 the court ordered him locked
