"Tha problem that is absorbing mj attention at this stage of the game," sighed the little widow, "is how to go to a tea, dinner, dance, late supper, get home at five of a morning seven times a week, then snatch enough sleep to keep my brain in condition to keep the wolf from the telephone." The Simple Life. Happy is the man that eats only for hunger, and drinks only for thirst, and lives by reason, not by example, and provides for use and necessity, not for ostentation and pomp. Seneca. Pfeister faced Lindaman and had the best of him by six hits, Boston getting only five and Chicago getting 11. Chance was there strong with the willow, getting a home run and a two base hit. Pat Moran also showed the beaneaters what they lost when they traded him, by getting a two bagger and a fine single, besides nailing every man that tried to steal on him. My, how the crowd rooted for Pat, as he is a hot favorite in Boston. Brain played a fine game for the home team and got three hits. It Is getting rather tiresome reporting the Sox and Cubs games as it seems to be the same old story every day. The newspaper writers have already exhausted their vocabularies along the win lines and are now praying that they will get a chance to write something about the Chicago teams losing a game. What is the matter with the other teams in the American and National leagues that they can't take a game now and then from the Chicago teams? We hope the bottom won't fall out of the winning streaks, but we want a tight race. Bill Squires is taking a good stand against matching up with any of the pugs who have earned reputations as fakirs, and if he means what he says, he has the American sporting public with him. It is Intimated that he was the cause of the postponing of the match between Burns and himself, as he refused to meet the Canadian. "No fakirs can fight me, 'is the statement purporting to come from his lips, and so Coffroth thought it best to put the fight date over a month in the hope that Bill might change his mind. Rseben ran like a selling plater In the Crotonla stakes at Belmont park yesterday and finished sixth In the race. He had no speed whatever and the whip end spur had to be used to keep the giant sprinter along with the bunch. Something surely is the mat ter with this good horse, and his con dltlon should be investigated by the stewards. However, his owners, John son, Sullivan and Farrell, are said to have lost heavily on him. Suffrage, 3 to 1, came in first. :A large number of Hammond and South Chicago fans Journeyed over to Chicago Heights last night to witness the bouts at the Summit Atheltlc club, and they proved fairly good fights Carl Anderson was present and chal lenged the winner of the main go Otto Uder and Tom O'Keefe went six rounds to a draw, Kid Smith whipped Young Sharkey In six. Young Lobach and Young Croix went six rounds to a draw. A Hammond man was referee.
The Sox won a freak battle from the Senators yesterday by a score of 7 to 2. Heavy batting at critical times, courled with errors by the Washington men, was responsible for the victory, and the Sox were there with the willow when a hit meant a run. Hughes was relieved by Graham in the sixth inning after five runs had been scored off the long boy's delivery, but two more came in In the seventh. Jlggs Donohue got three hits and Dougherty two. Michigan and Williams, the east vs. the west, fought for supremacy until dark last night, and after thirteen Innings of play, the game was 0 to 0. This leaves it up to the Chicago-Williams game tomorrow at Marshall field to settle the argument. The Michigan pitcher, Ovitz, allowed only three hits and struck out ten men, and Ford for Williams allowed five hits and struck out nine men. Director Stagg left yesterday for New York where he will attend the meeting of the joint football rules committee tomorrow morning. The principal changes are the substitution of a fifteen-yard penalty for the loss of the ball on a forward pass, and the lengthening of the halves from thirty to thirty-five minutes. Mike Kelley appeared at the South Side grounds yesterday to play with the Washington outfit, but although he was in uniform he was ordered from the bench by tho umpire, acting under Johnson's orders. The Hyde Park Y. M. C. A. is holdng a cross country run on June 29, open to all registered amateur athletes. The course will start at the clubhouse n Madison avenue and Fifty-second treet and after a run through Jack son park, will finish at the clubhouse. President Roosevelt has been pre sented with a life pass and a life membership in the National Associa tion of Professional Baseball leagues. The card was of solid gold. The athletes are gathering at Urbana, 111., for the track and field games of the interscholastic league. 3ol boys are entered. Everything Is ready for the SchreckWille fight at Tonopah.
