A. M. TURNER tells a pretty good story about Hammond weather. He said that recently a man from Tennesee and one from Pennsylvania, who were comparatively recent additions to the city's population, were discussing the weather. The Tennessee man Bald: "How long do your winters last here In Hammond?" And the Pittsburg man replied: "I don't know; I have only been here nine months."
Frank Kroeker and E. Nelson of Harrison avenue returned home yesterday after spending several months in Lawrence, 111.

NEW YOKE LETTEIL New York, May 17. The stock market opened practically unchanged from
yesterday's closing prices.
The one disturbing factor in Wall street la the crop situation. Traders in stock adhere stubbornly to the position that these crop stories are more
or less exaggerated and that there will
be sufficient grain to go around when the harvest time comes. Nevertheless, stocks like Atchison. Union Pacific. St.
Paul, Northwest, Northern Pacific,
Great Northern and roads traversing
the southwestern grain belt each day
show a weaker undertone and de
cline fractionally from day to day.
Atchison and St. Paul were about the
weakest of the grain earning roads, each issue showing a decline of almost
two points for the day.
The report that the attorney general
would institute suit against the Harriman lines was the depressing influence In Union Pacific, Southern Pacific and Baltimore & Ohio. It is pointed out that these cults may drag along
for a year, regardless of that, sentiment plays a great part In stock spec
ulation.
Discounting future events in stock
values is the universal custom. The
bears took advantage of these factors
to hammer stocks and as a net result
tonight's close shows a shrinkage av
eraging about two points throughout
the list with indications for further
declines.
Thomas Dwelk and William Dasey
of Calumet Heights were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. Callahan at their home

FROM the road it looks as though Mayor Schmitz of San Francisco would have to leave the chair and seek consolation in his fiddle. Ruef, in his streak of yellow, says that the mayor got $50,000 in graft from one company alone, and If this is true, it is easily Been where the funds for that princely tour of Europe camo from.
