My, what a fight is on to get a match with the bis? fellow. Managers of clubs are out each day with Ufa sized' offers for bouts and first you hear that Burns is to get the honor and then O'Brien or Schreck or some other aspirant. One report today states that Burns has decided to meet the big Australian on
i V
rm i & I May 80, and another report says that Mike Schreck well be the man. W. S. Johnson of Tonapah wants Hchreck to meet Bob Fitzsimmons on the May date and on July 4 to hook up with Squires. Coffroth Is making efforts to sign both O'Brien and Burns for a bout with Squires on the last of May but they continue to flirt with him. Schreck will take any of them on and has as good a chance as any of them. Nick Altrock was the girl, Detroit was the place and yesterday afternoon was the time, and the Detroit Tigers went down to defeat again by a score of 4 to 2. The handsome ono had the maneaters in his grip all the time and they were only able to scatter about seven hits off hla delivery. Slever the left handed wonder, was not so fortunate and was bumped for eleven blngles, all of which were in on the scoring proposition. Isbell despite his bad hand was in the left garden while Dougherty took a needed rest, and the man with the shinv dome was there for a hit. The win put the Sox back on the top of the heap. Just 106 pairs of shoes were given away on five baseball grounds last year, and the sluggers worked hard to get them. At the Boston American league grounds, twenty pairs were handed out and at the Bostpn National, 14. At Brooklyn twenty-three pairs and at New York, eighteen. Why don't some public spirited shoe mon offer a pair of shoes for every home run made by the Hammond players this year and start a slugging competition. The plucky little jocky, Radke, had a narrow escape from death yesterday at Jamaica where he was thrown rid ing Ben Cole and received numerous scratches and bruises. The accident happened In the home stretch and after the toss, Radke staggered to his feet and off the track where he fell in a faint. This track is considered a Jonah amongst the Jockeys ofhe East and Miller and Radke will take a vacation until the opening of Belmont Park. The Chicago A. C. will hold a Marathon swim from the club house te South Chicago this spring. The event is copied after a like one held by the New York Athletic club from Huckelberry Island to Travers Island, and over twenty swimmers entered In the event last year. Trophies will be offered by the Chicago club and by the South Shore Country club for the first three men. The Cubs fared badly at the hands of Adelbert Mason and the Cincinnati Reds. He has his hands in good work ing order throughout and the heavy hitters of the Cubs were only able to put over six hits, with one run result.. Eigh hits were scored off Pfelster and three runs crossed the plate, New York is now tie with Cubs. Packey McFarland and Harry Harris are in training at. West Baden and are giving daily , exhibitions of their fast work before admiring crowds. McFarland is to meet Sayers at Milwaukee on May 10 and will have to be in excellent condition to hold his own. Harris expects a match with Spike Rabson and is rapidly rounding Into shape. Fifty prominent German women met at the Sherman House in Chicago yes terday and the preliminaries for the tenth annual skat tournament to be held at the Coliseum June 8, 9, and 10, were discussed. The program will in clude whist, euchre and cinch tournaments. Jack Johnson, the , colored heavy weight, is reported at Honolulu enroute for San Francisco in his chase of Bill Squires, the Australian, to meet whom he went to the Antipodes. He says he will get him yet. The Sox will play the first double header of the season at Detroit today. lhey will come home Sunday for a long stay. The Cubs will also be in Chicago this week for a short period.
