Tne service was held in St. Joseph's church, Hammond at 8 a. in. He was buried in Greenwood cemetery in the family lot. WEST PULLA1AN Mrs. Ernest of Eggleston avenue is very sick with rheumatism. TCaynel, of Elgin, 111., were married here Tuesday afternoon by Rev. C. B. Beckes. John Ilamann, of this city and Miss Matiida Homfleld, residing five miles south of town, were married this noon at the home of the bride of Rev. P. Claussen. Walter Talcott goes to the Jamestown exposition in the interest of the National Cash Register company. Mr. Talcott represented the same iirm at the St. Louis exposition. John II. Claussen of Hammond and Miss Emma D. Specht, of this city, were married this morning at 10 o'clock at the home of the bride, north of town by Bev. P. Claussen. Gottlieb Somenburg, an old resident here passed away Tuesday noon in his sixty-second year. The deceased had been a Valpo resident for twenty years coming from Germany. A wife and five children are left to mourn. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from St. John's church. Rev. Keiser, of Chesterton officiating. Ice cream will be served tonight at the school house after the graduating exercises. The "Passion Week" play was given last evening at McCool. A number from Wheeler attended. Real estate buyers have been quite numerous in Gary in the past three days. We hope to see it continue until the territory south of the Michigan Central railroad is all sold and buildings are under way. Let the street car company make a little more showing and we will fell quite encouraged. Miss Myrtle Elser of Chicago, is spending a few weeks with relatives in town. Contactors Gallagher & Williams have secured the contract for another large saloon building in Gary, size 22xi)0. It was quite amusing last night to see two Toleston men get left on the Michigan Central train coming to Toleston. They decided that they had time to light their pipes and when told the train was in sight kept right on filling their pipes, and had a pleasant walk for a mile in the rain. The Catholic clergy of Lake county will hold a conference in Hobart sometime during this month, the exact date not yet being set. John Hillman and Wm. Joe Ilein and Miss Mary Franz were married this morning at St. Peter and Paul's church at Turkey Creek, Father Koenig, performing the ceremony. Thos. Hickey and Ed. Keilman went to Hammond yesterday where Mr. Hickey was given the first degree in the Knight's of Columbus in the evening. A. K. Garhart received the sad news yesterday of the sudden death of his daughter, Mrs. Orsemus Spencer, who lived in Kansas. His daughter, Alice, left for there immediately to make arrangements for the funeral. A couple of Hobart young ladies are accused of holding up and robbing a poor widower of a portion of his jewelry, holding it until the gentleman produces a ransom of two boxes of bonbons. Albert the three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Quedck died Monday with spasms during the absence of his parents. Ed McCluster, who was charged with drawing a razor on Officer Jenkins of Gary on March 23, was tried in the circuit court this week and fined $25 and given five days in jailTreasurer Bailey's force Is working overtime this week keeping up with the rush of spring tax paylnsc tloia.
Mr. Bailey thinks that this collection will be the biggest semi-annual collection ever made in Lake county.
Both of Crown Point's abstracting firms have all the business they can handle this spring owing to the unusual activity in real estate. As high as fifty real estate transfers have been filed for record wih Recorder Jones in a single day. James Anau and F. W. Jacobs were tried by a jury in the Lake circuit court this week, on a charge of robbing John Thielman at Gary. Ind. The jury found both guilty and fixed their punishment at confinement in the Jeffersonville reformatory at from two to fourteen years. Ed Berry, who was under $200 bonds on a charge of larceny, has left the county and his bonds were declared forfeited by Judge MeMahon on Monday. Berry is one of the fellows who was associated with Frank McColley in the robbery of a Jew peddler here last winter. LOWELL NEWS Ward Hathaway is over the scarlet fever, the Quarantine being raised Tuesday. The room taught by Miss Nola Calk ins and closed on account of scarlet fever has been reopened. The soaking rain of Monday night will do a great deal toward insuring a good hay crop this year. Mrs. John Hinsley of Chalmers is here for a short visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Belshaw. J. W. Lilly, who got hurt by a horse, laying him up for some time, is able to come down town by the aid of crutches. Much of the grading for the gravel roads is done from Nichols' corner at the west corporation line of Lowell, to Miller's hill, down in West Creek township, six miles. Mrs. A. L. Spindler has returned to her home in Chicago Heights after a pleasant visit here with her mother, Mrs. E. R. Bacon, and sister, Mrs. S. C. Dwyer, and husband. R. company increased the wages of its section hands from $1.35 to $1.50 per day. Peter Austgen, who was confined to the house all winter by sickness, re turned to Chicago, where ho resumed his work. Late reports from George Schaefer's boy are that he is getting along nicely and if no complications set in, will soon recover. Quite a number of farmers were in town yesterday as they were unable to do any work on account of the heavy rain Monday night. John Heiser, who has a coffee store in Hammond was here yesterday trying to get customers so his coffee wagon could make a weekly or biweekly trip to Dyer and surrounding country. In spite of the cold weather some little girls were out yesterday evening to gladden some hearts with pretty little May baskets.
