A number, of important matters are expected to come up before the board of trustees this afternoon for action in one way or another. First will come the matter of tho improvement of Broadway south of the Wabash. The entire board has been inspecting pavements in different places. Trustees Sears and Knotts and Engineer Melton having been at South Bend and Trustee Caldwell at Terro Haute. The general opinion seems to be that brick laid oti a sand foundation will be used, it being the concensus of opinion that this is the most satisfactory, everything considered. The franchise for which the stel corporation's subsidiaries are asking will come up for some kind of action, although it will probably not be in the nature of an adoption. The board is inclined to go slowly In tho matter. All of the fran- j
chides asked for thus far are said to
be decidedly narrow, being so much so
that several attorneys declare they would not be held good in court on account of their exclusiveness.

LONG HUNT FOR STATION.
Sergeant Hi; j tie, UeoenU v Trim for r..,l
Finally Locate Ilia xew Job. Sergeant John M. Hayde, who was
transferred yesterday from the Hud
son avenue police station on the northwest side to the East Side station had
as many adventures as Alice in Wonderland In trying to locate his new job. Sergeant Hayde was directed to go to the Ilegewisch station, by which name
the sixteenth precinct station was known previous to its removal on Au
gust 26, of last year to its present location at 106th street and avenue M.
Accordingly he boarded a car for South
inicago, ana on arriving at the busy center, took a Hammond car fnr tho
house, where there is a nice level
stretch of Pennsylvania railroad track leading to Ilegewisch after a thirtyfive minutes walk.
Arriving at Ilegewisch, the sargeant
asked a citizen where the station was
and was informed that it was four miles
away. In disgust the official sought a restaurant and had just sat down to a nice order of ham and eggs when
somebody informed him that the next train left for the station in four min
utes. Hastily abandoning all thoughts of dinner, Sargeant Hayde made a rush
for the train, and in due time landed
two diocks rrom his destination. He
arrived at the station about 3 p. m. a sorer but a wiser man.
Sergeant Hayde Is willing to ac

Hungarian residents of South Chicago living near the steel works were given a scare yesterday afternoon when what appeared to be a shower of blood took place. Dynamite was being used on the piles of ore in the steel company's yards, and the high wind blew the stuff, which has a red color, a considerable distance. It covered some spots near the works to a depth of nearly a quarter of an inch.
