GARY NEWS
The carpenters who have been at work on the Land company's office quarters, finished their work this afternoon. Their work leaves a much more convenient arrangement for Captain Norton and his work as well as that of Cashier Hyman.
The town trustees are holding their special meeting this afternoon, going over the balance of the building ordinance.
Constable Chambers and Deputy Marshal Jenkins took the cavalcade of five prisoners to Crown Point yesterday morning.
Attorney Call prosecuted the case of the man who did the shooting last night near Jozef Galik's saloon. One of the officers shot at a dog that was running toward them not far from the saloon and the man who was boarding at Galik's, stuck a double barrelled shot-gun out of the door and fired both barrels. The officers brought in both wnan and gun and he pleaded guilty yesterday morning to the charge.
Feuer Bros, of Cleveland, O., came on thl3 morning to meet with Referee in Bankruptcy John O. Bowers of Hammond, Attorney Frank N. Gavlt of Whiting and Mr. Costello of Chicago, relative to the planning of their buildings on Broadway, between the proposed syndicate building and the hotel building. They own together 200 feet on Broadway and expect to plan a building of uniform design and construction. This plan of construction is meeting with favor among a number of the purchasers along Broadway and will go far toward making beautiful buildings of the several business blockB In the different parts of the city, something that can but rarely be said of business blocks In any other place.
The First National bank people have already ordered their temporary fixtures and expect to be ready to do business in a couple of weeks now. They will do a general banking business and will prove a material aid in relieving conditions here on account of tho lack of a bank.
I Albert, Bormann of Hobart, came over this afternoon for a short visit. He and his brother Otto, are pushing the erection of their building at Tenth avenue and Broadway. They expect to have disposition made at an early date of the suit involving their property, the plaintiffs having, come to the conclusion that they would gain more by suing for damages rather than specific performance, the ground on which the first suit was brought.
The strike situation on the several different lines of work Is much the same as It has been for several days. "Work on the plant site continues unhindered as well on a large part of the work on the town site, the strikes affecting but certain parts of the work on the contracts on the town site. In fact a large number of the people here know nothing of there being a strike on at any part of the work, showing how little it is really felt, save by thoso directly Involved. Attorney Heart Is just now patting Mmself on the back so to speak, and Incidentally two Italians who were tried on a charge of being drunk have been released, the verdict which the Jury brought in having been set aside. Luke and Steve Kobloch were arrested Saturday evening and put in Jail, the charge being drunkenness. Charles Flagg of Prosecutor Boone's office at Hammond, came over yesterday morning to assist Attorney Barden in the handling of the cases. "When the case of the Kobloch brothers was called, their attorney, Gus Heart, asked for a jury and agreed to the taking of six men. Six men were brought in and the trial proceeded, no defense being made whatever. The jury were charged by Judge Fitzgerald and within three minutes brought in a verdict of guilty assessing the fine at $1 and costs. Then Attorney Heart took advantage of tho part of the statute which denies a man on trial on a criminal charge the right to waive tho number of Jurors who shall sit on his case, it being mandatory that twelve jurors be called. The prisoners were declared free after Judgo Fitzgerald set aside the verdict. The attorneys in charge of the prosecution ara of the firm belief that they will never be caught napping again.

Kills Three Women Before Physician.3 Discover "What Took Their Lives. Evansvillo, Ind., April 0. Physicians have discovered that poison contained in paper that covered the wall of a room in the home of James Watson in Fosey county caused the death a few days ago of Mrs. Watson, -who it was believed at first, died of meningitis. Watson has lost three wives in the last three years. All showed the same symptoms in their lastillness, and it is believed each was poisoned by the paper. Watson says each of his wives cleaned the wallpaper a short time before she became ill and died. The paper has been examined by chemists, and Is found to contain a virulent poison. When brushed cr shaken a fine, mica-like substance falls from it It was to prevent mail clerks and other postal employes from being poisoned that the government recently
forbade the mailing of souvenir post
cards covered with this preparation.
