CUBS CAPTURE i ITIC CONTEST Chance's Men Vin Freezing Game From Indianapolis by Score of 4 to 1. Indianapolis, Ind., April 6. In the coldest game if the present trip the Cubs defeated Indianapolis yesterday by the score of 4 to 1 before a small and shivering crowd. The weather was execrable for baseball, and had it not been that the players lost a ful day's practice, owing to the rain in Springfield Thursday, Chance might have canceled the game. As it was the Cub manager felt the men needed all the practice possible, owing to the nearness of the season's opening, and sent them to the ball park for morning practice. The men were heavy eyed and sleepy when they were turned out yesterday, as they did not reach hero from Springfield, O., until shortly after midnight. They capered around in sweaters and heavy clothing and tried to believe they liked it. Not more than 200 fans braved the arctic weather for yesterday's game, which was one sided and uninteresting. The Hoosiers could do little with Overall, who held them to four hits and struck out eight men. Big Jeff was in good form despite the cold, and finished the game without giving a base on balls. Indianapolis used two pitchers, from whom the Cubs got nine hits, of which threo were doubles. The wallops were usually so bunched that runs resulted, and, although the wind was nipping, there were few errors. New York, April 6. Another heavyweight from the coast has come to town and he is a likely looking youngster. This latest aspirant for the premier heavyweight honors is Sam MoVey of the dusky tribe. Being only 21 years old, he has outh and strength in his favor, and Frank Bernard, who has formed a managerial partnership with him, thinks so well of the man that he is ready to back him for J5.000. And he has the money. McVey frankly admits that he has adopted the fighting profession, and being out for all the money In sight, he will meet any of the men in his class. He weighs, when In condition, 205 pounds, and would like to tackle Jim Jeffries, but as the latter says he nsver will meet a negro McVcy is ready to sign up with Jack Johnson or any one else. DONLIN QUITS GIANTS. New York Player "Will Act an Thentricnl Manager. Mike Donlin is to pass up the Xew York Giants this year. The great outfielder of the Giants has been offered the job of assistant manager of the Whitney opera house and has accepted. The theatrical field looks good to Mike and he has decided to abandon the professional field for this season anyway. This does not mean Donlin will quit playing ball altogether. "While here Donlin will play with some of the local semiprofessionals. Donlin left the team in Louisville. He said that he and McGraw parted the best of friends, but that he was not going to stick with New York for the money Brush wanted to pay when he could pick up more here. C. I. & S. TEAM TO ORGANIZE. The employes of the Chicago, Indiana & Southern road and the Indiana Harbor lUdt will have . a base ball team this year. For the last week there has been a movement on foot for organizing but so far nothing has teen done although the men have been out practicing every night.. That the C. I. & S can slate a good team seems to be a certainty as there are several ex-college players on the engineering corps and they have signified their intention of coming out. The organization of the team will probably be perfected by next week when the probable line-up will be printed In The Times.

YEAR OLD RUNNER N MARATHON Peter Foley Will Compete in Big Eastern Event April 19. Boston, Mass., April 5. Although nearly 50 years of age, Peter W. Foley of Medford, Mass., will compete in the Marathon race here April 19. The veteran runner is considered by many to have a grand chance to be among the leaders at the end of the twenty-five mile event. Foley, who is a member of the Boston A. A., ia an all round athlete. For the past three years he has started in the Marathon race, and although he never won, he always finished strongly. His appearance on the road from Ashland to Boston on those occasions has always created as much interest and enthusiasm as that of the winner. All along the line he is greeted with cheers. While "the old man." as ho is commonly called in New England, is not a sprinter, he is a plodder, who was never known to quit. Many times his stamina has enabled him to beat out his opponents who were less than half his age. Last year he finished among the first thirty, and two years ago he came in thirty-second. In that race it took him three hours, twenty-five minutes and six and one-fifth seconds to traverse the course. No watch was kept on him last year, but experts say his time was much faster than the year before. SPORTING BRIEFS. At a meeting of the directors of the LaPorte Base Ball association held last evening Manager "William R. Smith and Treasurer R. L. Sonneborn were authorized to close the deal today with Louis H. Voegler for Pine Lake ball park. This was done by the pa ment of $430, which vests in the association the ownership of the grand stand, fence, etc., and makes it possible to execute a lease for the use of the grounds for such time as the directorate may elect. The Hammond Baseball association will hold its second annual banquet and ball at Blissmer's hall April 13. The game tomorrow will be between the Joe Long Colts and the Hammond Regulars. The Hammond baseball team will journey to Hubbard park ' tomorrow afternoon where they will have a stiff workout under the direction of Manager Randall. The local team is fast rounding Into condition and will be ready to meet any semiprofessional tleam in the country after their first game April 28. In speaking of a schedule, Manager Randall says that nothing definite has been done yet, but said that the local team would meet the best semiprofessional teams in Chicago. According to reports from Hebron, Ind., the town is preparing to organize a baseball team, to schedule games with all teams through northern Indiana. The Lowell baseball team will have their first practice game tomorrow at Oakland park with a scrub team. Ernest Greagg, an ex-leaguer, will assume management of the team. Frank Green went to Chicago this morning to get two men to go on in the preliminaries of Anderson's fight with Morean, April 17. Attorney W. J. McAleer of the Hammond building is planning to organize a team composed of occupants from the building. Whether the proposition will go through has not been decided, but from the present indications it surely will. Real Estate Transfers Benjamin F. JEROME "MIGHTY OTiSAKTIN' " Concludes After All, Not to Appeal to a Higher Court Thaw Trial Pro ceeds Next Week. New York, April 0. The trial of Harry K. Thaw will procotvi on Monday morning', when Delmas, the leading counsel for the defense, will begin his summing up address to the jury. District Attorney Jerome finally decided not to apply to the appellate division of the supreme court for a writ of prohibition or mandamus to halt the trial. He reached this decision, it was said, after a consultation with eminent counsel. Jerome may argue briefly on Monday morning against the confirmation of the report of the lunacy commission which declared Thaw to be gane, but he is aware that Justice Fitzgerald's disposition is to confirm the report, which was unanimous. The trial on Monday will enter Its twelfth, and what is confidently expected at last to be its final, week. The long delays which have characterized the proceedings from the first have imposed the extra task upon the attorneys who are to sum up to the jury of making a complete resume of th testimony, fo as to freshen the memory of the jurors who for two weeks will have been entirely out of the atmosphere of the trial. Delmas may speak two days. Jerome says he will not speak more than three or four hours. It is thought that a verdict may be reached on Thursday.
