THE GITY

One of the most elaborate and beautiful post-Lenten receptions given In Hammond, was the one held this afternoon at the home of Mrs. William Gilbert Faxton, 12 RImbaeh avenue. More than one hundred guests responded to the cards sent out. The rerpetion room was decorated with slmlax as were the other rooms. Th chandeliers were artistically hung with the trailing vines and the lights shaded with green. In the dining room the table wa beautifully arranged In green and white with a center piece of white lilacs. From the chandeliers to the corners of the tables were caught festoons of slmlax and the corners of the table green shaded candles were placed tied with Immense bows of green satin ribbon. A very delightful program was given during the afternoon with numbers by Mrs. Lulu Tyler Gates, a talented reader of Chicago ,and vocal selections by Mrs. Miller and Mrs. AV. L. Simonton, also of Chicago. A delicious luncheon, prepared by Mrs. Mary Epker, was served following the program. The afternoon proved a very charming one.

The Up-To-Datb Whist club had a very pleasant party yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. S. Kckhart, 13$ Russell street. "Whist was played during the afternoon and honors were won by Mrs. P. I Davis and Mrs. IV. 8. Eckhart. The hostess served a luncheon aftfr the games. All the members of the club were present. The next party will be In one week at the home of Mrs. K .Young in Sibley street. Mrs. Fred Vince and Miss Mary Vince : of Mt. Carroll, 111., are visiting their mint, Mrs. P. L. Davis, at her home, 60 Ilimbach avenue. They saw "Checkers" at McVickers last evenin.

Invitations have been received by a , number of young people here for a ' dancing party to be given tonight by ' the "Whiting Owl club in their club rooms. A pleasan ttlmo Is anticipated. The pedro party given by the drill team of Modern "Woodmen, was held last evening in "Weis' hall and was very largely attended. Seven games of pedro of thirty-two points each were i played until 10 o'clock when informal 'dancing and a generally pleasant time was enjoyed. The affair was very well attended and a pleasant informal evening was spent. The members consider it one of the most successful evenings ever spent. The Ladies of the Aid society were on the reception committee and later served dainty refreshments. Rev. W. E. Shirey will go to Lowell tomorrow to hold communion services at the Presbyterian church there. The Hammond pulpit will be supplied from Chicago. The Logansport Presbytery will meet In the First Presbyterian church Monday and Tuesday of next weex. The first session will open Monday even

made for Friday evening, but owing to the oratorical contest on that night

popularity will be eagerly sought by dozens of young ladies In the various

aisiricts, me confines or which were described In the full page advertisement that appeared in the paper last

night.

HUNGARIAN WORKMAN HURT.

John Nazor, a Hungarian, was serious

ly injured last evening at the Western Steel Car & Foundry company's plant

in Hegewisch. Nazor is a single man, residing at 319 Pullman avenue, Burnham, and was employed as a laborer

In the steel mill. He and a brother

and another man were working near

an electric crane, which was loading some iron on a truck, when the iron

fell over upon him.

Nazor's head and face were quite

badly cut and his right eye Injured.

He also sustained a broken nose. Drs. Poehls and McDonald were summoned

t once to attend the injured man,

who was this morning sent to the

county hospital in Chicago.

At the meeting of the board of pub

lic works this morning the contract

for putting in a twenty-four inch sew

er in Chicago avenue was awarded to

Lavene Bros.

Despite the remonstrances that were

made by property owners on Pine and Cedar street against the proposed side

walks the board decided to stand by

the resolution for sidewalks.

There was some discussion as to ac

cepting the plat of the South Homewood addition because the one adjoin

ing it on the north does not conform

with the submitted one on the street

plan. The board suggested that the owners of the two plats reach some understanding as to the platting of the two additions.

MARLATT BOY HEARD FROM. The police today received further information as to the whereabouts of Arthur Marlett. A letter was received at the police station this morning addressed to Whitaker, who is being held there to await a trial and who is held responsible for the bay's absence. The letter was signed "James Hartman." William Hartman has gone to Decatur to return the boy to his home'.

Arthur W. Rupp and Miss Gwendoline McCormick of Chicago were mar

ried by Judge McMahon yesterday af

ternoon. Both had intended to get

marired at Crown Point on the 18th of

last month and had secured their mar

riage license there. When Justice Nicholson was about to perform the ceremony Gwendoline balked and all that was left for the would-be groom

to do was to pocket the license and return with his would-not-be-bride to Chicago. In the meantime the girl

received the consent of her parents and promised Arthur to marry him

within a month. To their notion the

month ended yesterday and they came to Judge McMahon explaining that they already had the license. They returned
