Cruiser Has to Hunt Coal. The cruiser Chicago, which has been patrolling the Pacific side of the Isthmus and Central America, has gone from Acajutla, Salvador, to Acapulco in Mexico, 1,000 miles northward. Mexico Goes to the Iiimit. Senor Corea afterwards visited Senor Creel, the Mexican ambassador, who has gone to the limit of his powers in the endeavor to induce the belligerent republics to accept the good offices cf Mexico and the United States in bringing about peace. It is evident that Senor Corea is about to transmit to the government at Managua some representations for its consideration. TEXAS HAS A TRAGEDY
Raid on a Gambling House Ends in the Death of Two Participants. THEIR SLAYER MORTALLY HURT Two Men Shot Down in the Good Old Texas Way. One of the Victims Is the County Attorney, Who Headed the RaidMob Spirit Quickly Developed. Forth Worth, Mex., March 23. Following a raid on an alleged gambling house County Attorney Jeff I. McLean was shot and killed and Hamil I. Scott, a member of the raiding party, fatally wounded bv William Thomp son, proprietor of the resort raided. Half an hour later Thompson was surrounded in a lumber yard within 100 yaids of where Scott was shot down, and captured after a desperate fight in which Thompson received bullet wounds that will probably cause his death within a few hours. The series of tragedies was of the most sensational and spectacular character, and was witnessed by hundreds of men and women, including many members of the state legislature here in attendance on a stock show. Shot Down Without a Chance. The house raided is located on Main street near the corner of Sixth, right in the heart of theretail district Shortly before 5 p. m. County Attorney McLean, heading a party of deputies, forced an entrance into the place, placed a number of men under arrest, and loaded a furniture van with tables and other paraphernalia. The wagon with the confiscated furniture had just moved off when Thompson approached McLean, who was standing on the sidewalk, ana when within a few feet of the official fired one shot, the bullet striking McLean in the throat, breaking his neck and causing almost instant death. Deputy Ambushed and Killed. As McLean fell Thompson turned ar.d ran west on Sixth street, with Scott in pursuit. Dodging behind a bill board at tho corner of Seventh and Trockmorton streets Thompson ambushed Scott, shooting the deputy three times in the body. When Scott fell Thompson stopped only long enough to discard his empty pistol for that carried by the dying deputy, and then renewed his flight By this time a score of policemen and deputy sher Iff8, followed by hundreds of excited vinfs 5L WITH ill

men and "toys, was "in pursuit 'of Thompson, who found temporary refuge in a lumber shed just across the street from the Touralne hotel, the most fashionable hostelry in the city. HE FIGHTS TO THE DEATH
Inevitable Cry of "Lynch Him' Makes Him Desperate. Here he was located by Patrolmen Bell and Lloyd. Thompson, by this time thoroughly desperate and with the cry of "lynch him" ringing in his ears, was ready for a fight to tho death. Bell and Loyd opened lire on Thompson, which the latter returned. The officers wounded Thompson in three places, and he is probably fatally injured. As soon as Thompson had emptied his gun the officers, whose own pistols were emptied, fell upon him with bare hands and made him a prisoner. By the time the shots were heard 011 the Inside of the lumber yard the mob on the outside numbered fully 3.000 persons. Soon a rumor spread that five officers had beea killed by the desperate man In the lumber yard. As the story was repeated the crowd became wilder and more excited au l men, women and boys .surged in h great mass about the streets intersecting at Trockmorton and Seventh. At this time the police patrol wagon came dashing through the crowd, and soon the officers" came out" dragging Thompson with them and holding their empty revolvers in their hands. The mob then threw itself upon the officers and was only prevented from attacking Thompson by the declaration that the double murderer was dead. With men hanglug on the steps of the wagon and demanding the life of the wounded prisoner the race was made to the station, and the prisoner was carried into tho police hospital. The story was then spread that he was dead and the mob quieted. County Attorney McLean had been an implacable foe to gambling. lie has led 100 raids since he has been in office, and last fall the gamblers opposed him at the polls, but he was re-elected. He was a son of the first railroad commissioner of Texas and ex-member of congress. There is talk here of ordering every gambler out of the city at once, and more severe measures are advocated In some cases. Exclusion in the Transvaal. Pretoria, Transvaal, March 23. The upper house of parliament has passed the "Asiatic ordinance," providing for the exclusion of the Japanese and other Asiatics, who are Immigrating to South Africa In increasing numbers.
