The third annual oratorical contest of the Wheeler high school was given last evening before a very interested audience. The contest this year was the most interesting it has ever been and speaks well for both pupils and

with a verdict in favor of Miss Ger
trude Robinson for first prize, and Miss
Etta Weddle for second. A gold and silver medal were awarded to the winners and with the hearty support of citizens of this town, we hope to push our candidate forward to the first prize at the final contest at Valparaiso, April 20.

The regular session of the Lansing Country Culture club was held last night In Hottinger's hall. Oak Glen. Both the bell binders of tho democratic and prohibition parties failed to appear on the battle ground for unknown reasons. Members of the Culture club acted as substitutes and they did so well that outsiders mistook them for tho real representatives of both parties.

Frank Sekoluda, a teamster for Charles Matz, was hauled in this afternoon by Officer Klopf for beating the horse he was driving. The horse was overloaded and when it could not pull the load the driver unhitched and started to beat it for not pulling. He was let out on cash bail to be tried in the morning for cruelty to animals. Matz, the owner of the horse, is probably more at fault than the driver, he having sent the man out to do hauling with one horse that would have been heavy work for two.

Several of the contractors on business buildings are kicking because of the inability of material men to keep them supplied with brick. Several buildings are being held up on account of slowness in filling orders on the part of brick manufacturers.
Patrick L. Fitzgerald made a trip to Walkerton last evening to learn as to his brother Daniel's condition. Dan was not quite as well when he left here as he had been for a few days before and his people are fearful lest the Illness might take an unfavorable turn.
Stein, Wyatt & Company are making preparations to move east and north of their present camp site to permit the work of track elevation. The moving of their large camp which comprises several hundred families, half a dozen large horse and provision tents, office quarters, etc., means a large outlay.
The storm door equipment of the Hotel Fitz has now been removed and the guests and neighbors of the hotel line up on the sidewalks in front of the buildings In the evenings as they did last summer. Here the tenderfoot may rub shoulders with the pioneer and hear recounted the story of the magic transformation that has taken place within less than a year.
Blackmun & Ulrich, one of the most active real estate firms now in Hammond, have just taken over 100 lots in the Birkhoff addition In Hammond which they now intend to put on the market. The price as quoted in the real estate transfer in tha recorder's office is given at $11,250. The formal transfer of lot 9 in the Glendale addition, now belonging to "W. C. Belman, eashler of the First National bank, was made on Thursday. Gostlln and Meyn were the sellers. The consideration is given at $2,000.
