All of the Lake Shore trains from the east were several hours late Wednesday on account of a wreck some forty miles east. The morning passengers Into Chicago did not get to leave here until nearly 12 o'clock. . William Duff Haynle, of the firm of Knapp, Ilaynie & Campbell, general counsel for the steel corporation in the west, stopped off between trains yester day arternoon to get in touch with matters. Tho artificial stone work on thej entrance at the east end of the building has been put in place and also the steel supports in the third story. The Clark Construction company handled an incipient strike at the hotel site on Sixth and Broadway this morning without gloves. Several of the negroes on the job tried to start a sympathetic strike on account of some of them having worked for less per day than others. The Clark people im- ' mediately discharged the entire disgruntled bunch numbering some thirtysix and hired other men In their stead. Work is progressing rapidly, all of the stone foundation being done and a large part of an Inner brick foundation wall completed. All of tho basement window frames have been set. Word has reached the local MethoTdlst organizers that the Rev. George Edmund Deuel, who visited here some time ago from Evanston where he la attending Garrett Biblical Institute, has been appointed resident pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Gary. He and Mrs. Deuel graduate from the lnstlute in May and will immediately take up the work here following the exercises. The presiding cider, Dr. "Wood of Hammond, who has the work here very much at heart, has been tireless in his search for a good man for the work here and is congratulating himself upon his good fortune. The Lake Shore Railroad company sustained its first mentionable loss here early this morning when a Big Four freight car was burned. When the alarm first went out it was thought that the depot and the buildings of the Calumet Supply company were burning. The car was loaded with heavy iron radiators, which was of large advantage inasmuch as if it had been loaded with grain or other inflammable material, the nearby buildings would no doubt have burned also. The police hurried down to the yard and isolated the car thus preventing the spreading of the fire, although the end of a gondola was badly schorched before they got them apart.
