HUE SOX ARE K FROM MEXICO Customs Officials Find For tune in Mexican Products in Their Trunks. Eagle Pass, Texas. March 2 0. The White Sox are again on United States soil. The journey from the Citv of Mexico to the border lasted fortveight hours, and no baseball club ever had a more memorable one. The watchword all along the line from Tula to Aguascalientes, from Jimulco to Torreon, and from Reata to Porfirio Diaz was manana. University of Chicago and United States cheers and national airs marked the crossing of the line. Delays began in the mountains near Juan del Itlo, and the train was over five hours late at Torreon. President Comiskey at 1:30 yesterday morning arranged for a special on the Mexican Central to make the Southern Pacific connection at Spofford. There was a delay of two hours at Torreon on account of a disabled engine. None of the party had the hides or bullion articles sought by Mexican customs officials, but at Uncle Sam's customs office enough wealth in drawn work, cigars, and cigarettes was revealed to make the officials think the White Sox expedition had bought out several Mexican stores. Trunks filled with clean clothes were found here and welcomed by the travelers, whoso clothes were almost ruined by the terrible dust of the trip. The party was practically lost to the people of the United States during the entire run from Mexico City to Porfirio Diaz. There were few facilities for sending messages. The air was full of dust and dirt nearly all the way, and the train missed several eating stations, oausing the party to turn the sleepers into lunch counters with fruit and canned goods as the principal articles of the menu. QUITS ATHLETICS TO Eiiijyusiss Michael H. Butler, Known in Hammond, Resigns Posi tion With Chicago Club. Michael II. Butler yesterday resigned his position as physical director of tho Chicago Athletic association to enter business in New York City, his former home. Ills successor has not yet been named, but Mr. Butler said last night that from what he could learn Paul Gledel had as good a chance as any one of landing the job. Geldel is the young athlete who has performed so well in the wrestling bouts at the C. A. A. He Is 24 years old, and of Swedish birth. Gledel, who is an unusually fine specimen of the athlete, was developed by Butler, and has been an employe of the Michigan avenue club for five years. Butler has been in charge of ath letics at the C. A. A. for ten years; in fact It would be Just that long had ho remained until Tuesday. His rec ord is most m.eritorious, and during that long period the Cherry Circle was carried to the front in many important events. About a year ago Mike wras engaged In a collar and elbow wrestling match at one of the C. A- A. shows with a powerful Japanese, said to be the sixth best wrestler In Japan. The Jap knew the collar and elbow style, and this, coupled with his knowledge of Jlu jitsu, gave him what appeared to be a decided advantage over Butler. The Jap showed well for a few mo ments, but to the shurprise of the crowd Mike got him by the hand and threw him what appeared to be thirty feet in the air over his head. Probably only the roof stopped the Jap from going into the clouds but he finally came down and landed so hard that he could not get up for several minutes. Naturally the Jap refused to proceed with the bout. Three years ago, while attempting to cross the Hudson river at night Mika became lost In a blizzard, and when found by a searching party with lanterns was nearly frozen to death. Mr. Butler is well known in Hammond. Spot Blair and Dana Summers having been his proteges. EARLHAM ATHLETICS BOOM. Richmond, Ind., March 20. The prospects for spring athletics at Earlham college were never more promising than they are this year, as there are a number of old men who have donn things and severel men who show much promise. There is a probability of two track meets this year, one on May 4 on Reld field, either with Miami or the Indianapolis Y. M. C. A., and on May 11 the state meet will be held at Wabash. Several old track men are back, and also a number of new ones who are expected to show up well, among them being Captain White, hurdles and high jump; Wann, half and quarter, and Birch and Elliott, the dashes. Among the long-distance men are Nanny, Furnas, Winslow and Hutton. Hancock has been doing well in the pole vault. Smelser, Thistlethwaite, Geyer and Walthal are doing well in the weights. Earlham will take up a new departure in athletics this spring in the nature of intercollegiate baseball, in which the institution has not engaged for a co'walAara.bia time.

CUBS LEAVE MOBILE.

Quit Gulf Town After Giving Local Team Another Severe Trimming. Mobile, Ala., March 20. After giving the Mobile team another and a severe trouncing today the Chicago National league champions ate their final dinner in the gulf town and retired in a sleeping car, to be picked up by some passing train and landed in Birmingham tomorrow for a three days' stand with the Southern league champions of that city. The boys played better ball today than at any of the games so far and landed a victory by the score of 8 to 1. Score: Chicago a. ii. p. a. e. I lot man, ps ; 2 3 4. Mountour, an Indian, threw William Egener, a local wrestler, in two straight falls, last night, the first in 21 minutes, by a leg scissors hold, and the second in 30 minutes by a hammer-lock. The bout took place here in the colosseum and was witnessed by more than 1,000 people, most of whom favored the lo cal man, although very little money was posted. Mountour is one of the best wrest lers in the game now, and the local man, who is a drayman, is thought to have done splendidly in holding the Indian off for such a length of time. Tho Indian has bested some of the fastest men in the weltherweight class and was all along regarded the better man, although lie weighs only 145 pounds to Egener's 17S. C0NTABLES STOP BETTING. Hot Springs, Ark., March 20. With 45-caliber revolvers strapped about their waists twenty deputies marched into 'the ' betting ring at Oaklawn track yesterday and their sudden appearanco created a panic. In less than a minute the spacious betting ring was cleared, and the deputies took possession. Tho deputies marched up and down the ring, while the spectators looked on in astonishment. The bookmakers filed into the grand stand, and bets were not made or taken after the second race, when the uninvited guests made their sudden appearance. The deputies had forced their way in with drawn revolvers through a side gate, and their raid was complete. LEAGUE A CERTAINITY. Boonville, Ind., March 19. A trolley league will be organized in the "Pocket" this season. Already Evansville and Boonville promoters have outlined plans, and it is likely that five cities In southern Indiana and one in northern Kentucky will be represented in this league. It is now the plan to include the following cities Boonville, Princeton, Huntingburg, Mt. Vernon, Henderson and Evansville. Henderson might be dropped under certain conditions and Jasper taken in. It is the plan to have the headquarters of the Trolley League at Boonville, which town probably will be the center of the circuit. About three games a week will be scheduled, so arranging it that contests will take place at Evansville when the Central league team is away, and at Boonville also when the league team is away. With strong teams it would be a paying proposition. SPORTING BRIEFS. Joe Gans, who is in Baltimore, has wired Ben Selig, his representative in San Francisco, that unless Nolan and Nelson agree to give him 60 per cent, of the 130,000 purse offered by Tex Rlckard, win, lose or draw, there will be no fight. Gans says that it was a bitter pill for him to win his recent bout with Nelson only to get the short end of all financial considerations Involved, but ha declares he was willing at that time to concede almost anything for the reason that he was under a cloud and needed that particular bout to get back into the good graces of the sporting public. "I can dictate now," says the lightweight champion, "and Nelson will have to accept my terms or lose another chance to recover his reputation." Ed Gorrlgan is said to have been forced to relinquish control of City Park track. New Orleans, In favor of local capitalists, who, report has it, may secure Joseph A. Murphy to manage the plant In future. Congressman Joseph L. Rhinock and J. B. Respess, two influential members of the Ameri can Turf association, are said to be heavily Interested in City Park and to be in favor of Murphy. Columbus, Ind., March 20. While engaged in a friendly wrestling match yesterday Roscoe Williams, captain of last year's Columbus high school football team, sustained a fracture of his left shoulder. Byford Flora, quarterbanls on the same team- was William's

opponent. Williams was considered one of the strongest men of the baseball team this spring, but his Injury will put him out of the game throughout the season.

EVERY DAY A NEW ONE. Forget Errors of Yesterday In the Possibilities of To-day. Here la a pretty bit of optomistic philosophy, inspired by so ordinary an occurrence as the daily sunrising: "Did you know the sun rose every morning? There are many persons who do not know this important fact, or, if they do know, they do not act accordingly. These persons carry yesterday's burdens and successes and failures. The failures of yesterday should be forgotten, because they dishearten us for to-day. The successes of yesterday should not be remembered, because they will v.-eigh against the larger possible successes of to-day. The burdens of yesterday should have been buried yesterday. That is one meaning of the sunrising. It shuts off yesterday. The sun rises as fair and bright and new this morning as though it had not risen anew every morning of these 6,000 years. It brings a new day with new opportunities. Yesterday is shut off from today by the curtain of the night and the sun rises in the morning to usher in the new day. There are men m this town who are gray with thft burdens of yesterday when they might be buoyant with the brightness of to-day's dawn. They have forgotten that the sua has risen.'
