Washington, March 19. Tho principal development in the Brownsville affair investigation is that the alleged confession of "D. XV. Cray," supposed to "dp a member of company B, Twenty-fifth infantry, which is implicated in the shoot-up, which was printed nt Galveston, Tex., has been formally denied in a telegram from Major Blocksora, at San Antonio, to the war department. Major Bloc-ksom said iu his dispatch that he iiad received a telegram from the chief of police at Galveston saying that the publication was a fake. Senator Foraker had the alleged confession put In the record, with the denial, which had been supplied to Chairman Warren by the war department. The Ohio senator also had recorded the fact that there was not a man named "D. XV. Gray" in the disc-barged battalion, but that there were two men named Gray, one "G. W." and the other "J. II." Gray, in company C Both of these ; men were heard from, denying that they had made confessions. One is in West Virginia and the other in Pennsylvania. Four Guns Have Been Identified. The senate investigation Is being made most thorough, and the result of one branch of the inquiry is that lour rifles from company B, Twentyfifth infantry, were used in the Brownsville affray, if the ordnance department of the army can substantiate reports sent to the committee concerning a microscopic examination of the thirty-three shells picked up in the streets of the town on the morning following the shooting. All of the rifles in the possession of the battalion at Fort Brown on the night of Aug. 13 were sent to the Springfield arsenal, and two shots were fired from each. The shells used were then compared with these picked up at Brownsville, and the officers making the testa reported that it has been demonstrated beyond dispute that four guns of company B were used in discharging all of tho thirty-three shells. Experts Ready to Explain. The reports wore made a part of

the committee records, and Lieutenant

Hawkins, of the ordnance department,

and G. A. Spoouer, expert Inspector of gauges used In the manufacture of muskets at the Springfield arsenal, are ready to go on the 6tand to explain

the reports and be cross-examined concerning them. Two of company B's rifles, said to have been used in the

afrray, were kept in the storehouse un

der lock, the key of which was in tho

possession of ex-Quartermaster Sergeant Walker McCurdy, and the oth

er two rifles were said to have been Issued to Privates Joseph L. Wilson

and Thomas Taylor. Call lbr More Witnesses.

Senator Foraker immediately had

eubpoenaes Issued for Taylor and Wil

son, and for the recall of McCurdy.

He also asked that the war depart inent be Instructed to send for Lieu

tenant Laurison, who commanded

company B at the time of the affray Secretary Taft in a letter to the com

mitteo pointed out that the men who

did he shooting may have used any

guns they could secure, and that Tay

lor and Wilson cannot be held to be guilty because of the showing made by

the tests at the arsenal.

San Francisco, March 19. The ac

tion of the grand jury yesterday in

bringing before it tho members of the

board of supervisors aroused the greatest interest in the proceedings of that lody, which had been forced to sus

pend its sessions on account of the

loubts thrown upon the legality of its

Bulletin Behind the Scenes ? To add to the public excitement The

Bulletin published an "extra" declar-

that further exposures of munici

pal corruption had been made, and that many indictments would soon be

reported. In certain circles the statements were given credence because of

the knowledge that The Bulletin people

have been openly securing evidence to

aid Assistant District Attorney Ileney

The Bulletin says that a plot involving the granting of valuable street railway privileges has been laid bare.

Half-a-Mlllion-Dollar Bribe ? It Is charged that the sum of $4r.O,-

C00 was paid to high officials to per

mit of the conversion of street railway systems into electric lines, and that the bulk of this money was retained by

a mysterious man," and that small

sums of money were parceled out to minor city officials to secure enough

votes to permit of the granting of tLe

lequired franchises. Another story to that rival telephone companies each paid large sums of money, one to shut off competition and the other to secure

the right of competing for public pat

ronage.

Monopoly in Fights Bought. Another charge is that a corporation

fund of ?2G,000 was raised by prize fight promoters to secure a monopoly of light permits. The railway franchises and the telephone franchises were passed by the supervisor 3 in the day of confusion immediately

following the earthquake in April. Assistant District Attorney Heney a few days vgo, when asked for a candid

personal opinion of his evidence against

ofiicials Indicted and about to be indicted, said: "I have stronger evi-

denco against these people than I had

in the land fraud cases in Oregon, and where the juries convicted."

PLUG CHEWING TOBACCO The reason "Star" is such a universal favorite is simply the extra good quality of tobacco that goes into every plug only the choicest, ripest, sweetest, best-bodied leaf grown. Every "Star" chew is rich in good, wholesome juice and every "Star" plug gives twice as much

chewing as any other chew made better chewing too. No chew so choice

none so economical.
