The Misess Marie and Daisy McKeown will entertain a number of friends at their home, 35 State street, Thursday evening. Miss Clara Houser of Valparaiso is the guest of friends in Hammond this week. Mrs. Frank L. Hanson and daughter, Miss Mae, were among the shoppers in Chicago this morning. An entertaining and instructive session of the History committee of the Hammond Woman's club Was held yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. M. Wood in Condit street. Mesdames D. M. Wood and E. It. Stauffer had charge of the meeting, which proved a profitable one. The first lesson on Mexico was given. Mrs. A. E. Wilcox gave a splendid paper on the "Cliff Dwellers," with a description of the manner and customs of theso queer people. Mrs. L. T. Meyer gave a paper on the 'Mexican in General," dating from the year 1519 to 1900. Mrs. M. Rothschild followed with an interesting talk and vivid picture of the chief amusement of the people, the bull fight. In her talk Mrs. Rothschild mentioned that music is given from the time the participants enter the arena to the close of the contest, and as an illustration. Miss Louise Wood charmingly rendered the 'Chausen du Torreador," from Carmen, which was enjoyed by all. At theo lose of this most interesting program the hotes3 served a three course luncheon, the first two of which were typical of the Mexicans. Eighteen members of the committee were present and two guests, Mrs. Fox and Mrs. J. J. Turner. All In ali it was an enjoyable afternoon. The next meeting will be held in two weeks at the home of Mrs. M. Rothschild. Mesdames M. Rothschild and A. W. Sprague will have charge of the second lesson, on Mexico. HEADED TOR THE PATHEHLAND. MacBeth Smith of the firm of Smith & Schottler, is suffering with an attack of the mumps. "Uncle Dick" Seibert never knew how well he liked hl3 shepherd dog until he wa3 stolen a few days. And now he is swearing bloody vengeance on the man that committed the crime, but promises first of all to bring him Into court. A NARROW ESCAPE. Yesterday afternoon while Miss Florence Henry was crossing the Monon and Michigan Central tracks going to the Chicago, Indiana and Southern, she barely escaped being killed. She was reading a letter and did not notice a north bound Monon train, the engineer blew his whistle and Miss Henry jumped to one side Just as the train sped by. It certainly was a very narrow escape. TWO TEACHERS RESIGN. Mis Alice Nelson has resigned her position as teacher of the fifth grade in the Central building on account of ill healtn, her resignation to take effect Friday. Miss Margaret Wilson, teacher of the third grade in the Central building has also resigned on account of poor health. Miss Wilson will remain until the spring vacation tho first week In April. Supt. McDanlels has not filled the vacancies yet and will not untill later In tlia month.

Attorney Holden of Chicago, representing the American Steel foundries was in Hammond today making application to the superior court for a change of venue of the case to the federal court at Indianapolis. The amount demanded In the case is over $2,00(). John W. Dyer, jr., is ill, threatened with pneumonia at the home o fhis parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Dyer, of South Hohman street. Miss Carrie Miller, a trained nurse from Chicago, has been called to care for him. Mrs. Rhoda Johnson of Crown Point spent today in Hammond. Dr. Sarah Noble was here from East Chicago on professional business this morning. Word has been received hero of the serious illness of Harvey Sauerman in Crown Point. Mr. Sauerman was recently married In Montana and on his return to Crown Point contracted a severe case of pneumonia, which it is feared has gone into quick consumption. D. E. Boone, prosecuting attorney, made a short business trip to Ross, Ind., this forenoon. Miss Peterson of Hegewisch is assisting Miss K. G. Reilley in her millinery parlors. Mrs. George Dobbins is ill with the grip at her home, 175 South Hohman street. William Whitleib visited in Whiting last evening. James Walsh of Valparaiso is visiting friends in Hammond for a few days. James Shafer left this morning for Marion on a few days business trip. County Treasurer Levi Bailey and County Auditor Charles A. Johnson were in Hammond this morning on their way to Gary. Dr. T. W. Kohr, president of the board of health, was here from Robertsdale last evening. Dr. Bacon was out from Englewood this morning looking after patitnts at St. Margaret's hospital. Word has been reecived here of the death of Thomas Morgan, jr., who died yesterday afternoon at the home of his father in Chicago. Mr, Morgan was a nephew of Mrs. John Lyons of 111 Ogden street and formerly lived in Hammond. Albert Borman of Hobart transacted business here this morning. Mrs. Pary Pfaff of Horsford Park spent today in Hammond. H. G. Stevens of Chicago was the guest of his mother, Mrs. E. Stevens, of Morton court last evening. The contract for this building has been let to Erick Lund and the building must be completed by October SI. The laying of the corner stone will take place on Decoration day. Legal Battle Waged In Justice Court for Body of Alleged Embezzler. A legal battle Is being waged this afternoon in Justice Jordan's court for the body of Stanley BieganoskI a fugitive from justice who is wanted in Chicago on a charge of embezzlement. The defendent was formerly an agent for a wholesale liquor concern and was arrested for the misappropriation of moneys belonging to the concern for which he worked. Bleganoski being out on bail on January 10, is alleged to have jumped his bond and crossed the state line where he would be begond the jurisdiction of the court in which his trial was to have come up. Bieganoski's bondsmen, Joseph Pioteis and Julius Kwasigroch after a search learned that the fugitive was in Hammond. An effort is being made to get him to return without the formality of extradition papers. Joseph Conroy is defending BieganoskI. George Turnbull is tho Chicago attorney who is seeking to secure the return of the fugitive. CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION. "CHIMES OF NORMANDY." The cast of the "Chimes of Normandy" had an excellent rehearsal last evening, George Herbert, who is too well known to Hammond people to re quire any introduction, being In charge. Another rehearsal will be held tonight at Weis' hall and all who wish to Join may do so by atending this practice. Mr. Herbert, who trained those who took part in "The Mikado," will not only have charge of the performance of 'The Chimes of Normandy" but will himself take a leading part. Mrs. Bridge, Carrie B.
