MICE PICKS ill FOR FlfiSTRFA GIE Real Work of Sports to Begin at New Orleans on Saturday. Manager Frank Chance nicked a team from his bunch of players yesterday and gave them a stiff workout- The diamond was covered with sawdust, so that It could be used. The way Frank placed the men yesterday will be the same way he will lino them up for their first game at New Orleans Sunday. The line up; Chance ....first base Ilofman second base Sweeny short stop Stelnfeldt third base Seabough catcher Randall left field Osborne center field Gessler and Schulte right field Mike Kahoe batted grounders to the infield, and the old pitchers to the out fielders who swooped down on them in championship form. Chance is especially watching the work being done by Sweeny and is much pleased with the youngster's work, who will probably be called upon to play Joe Tinkers place during the training trip and possibly tho early part of the season. Sweeney is fast and throws the ball to the bases ac curately. Seabough the backstop threw, the ball to second a few times yesterday and seems to have the speed as vell as the Judgment. Last night Chance gave out the Information that he would probably use tho same team that he used yesterday for the opening game at New Orleans Sunday. The team has received a letter from Overall stating that he will Join the club at New Orleans Sunday. FAMOUS BALLPLAYERS AT WEST BADEN Cubs and Plrnten at Resort Hold Gabfeat Before Large Audience of En thusiast. West Baden, Ind., March 7. The Chicago Cubs, with Manager Frank Chance and Trainer Jack McCormick In charge, are right down to very earnest preliminary work at this place. The members of the team all look to be in very nice shape physically, and their work and a free use of the mineral water this week will round them Into great condition. Both morning and after noon yesterday all hands were . on the diamondnear the Springs hotel. The advance guard of the Pittsburg Pirates arrived in time for a late din ner yesterday, the party consisting of Leever, Phillippi, Willis, Leifleld, Gibson and Phelps. Today active work be gan with them along with capacious libations of the water. The remainder of the Pirates will arrive here next Monday. The big Springs hotel, with a circular court covered with glass two hundred feet in diameter, is a lively and animated scene of evenings, and here is where the dally gabfests are held to large audiences. STOP C0CKFIGHTING. A dispatch from New Orleans, dated March 3, says: 'Today is the first Sunday in more than a century when there has been no cock fighting." The suppression of this particular form of entertainment seems to be about as difficult a task as the stamping out of boll weevil and the gypsy moth. There are thousands in whom a love of the sport is deeply ingrained. Mr. Taft ran up against a cock-pit in the Philippines, but succeeded only in pushing it outside of limited areas. American authority abolished it iii Cuba a few years ago, much to the dissatisfaction of many Cubans. A few days ago an urgent call was made upon Governor Magoon to rescind the order prohibiting the sport. If cock fighting is really suppressed here at home we can refuse with much better grace to countenance it in the islands under our control. NELSON HAS COLD. Will Visit Hot Springs, and May Go to Mexico Batllng Nelson and his manager, Billy Nolan, will soon be on their way to Hot Springs. Manager Nolan says that the reason Nelson returned home so unexpectedly was because the Dane is suffering from a very dangerous cold, and for a time Nelson felt that he wanted to bo near home in case he was taken sick. The pair have planned a trip to the south and will likely visit Hot Springs, New Orleans and probably the City of Mexico, where the champion White Sox are now training. PAPKE WINS PROM RHODES. Peoria, 111., March 7. Bill Papke won the decision over Billy Rhodes before the Peoria Athletic club here last night, after one of the most furious slugging matches ever witnessed in this city. Papke took the lead at the start. He hooked a hard right to Rhodes' Jaw half a minute after the battle started and Rhodes staggered to the ropes, almost helpless. He clung to the ropes and Papke showered left and right swings to his unprotected face. He lived through it, clinched, covered, and stalled for a minute, and then caught the step. . Rhodes recovered during a grueling second and third rounds, when his generalship and craft alone saved him, and then they fought on even terms. Papke rained blows on Rhodes' guards, and the latter's vicious swings and savage right handed uppercuts seemed to have no effect on the Spring Valley boy. During the later rounds
Rhodes had the better of the infighting, and they were at It continuously.
The decision was well received by the greatest crowd that ever saw a fight In this city. WANTS TO MEET ANDERSON. -Ritr .Tim Rnrrv nf Snrint Vallev. "Honey" Mellody of Charleston, Mass., was completely outpointed last night when he met Joe Thomas of San Francisco in a six round go. Thomas was given the decision, which was well re ceived by the spectators who were present. A return match will probably be booked for the last of April in Frisco. Milwaukee, March 7. There will be two championship bouts here March 12, which will Include bantams who have appeared lately. Young Fitzgerald and Johnny Coulon will mix it, and Kid Murphy and Eddie Greenwald will also go on. The Green Valley club landed the Murphy-Fitzgerald match by adding iuu to me purse orrered by the Badger club. Meantime, the Green Valley managers had heard of the Murphy defection ana went to Chicago, where they signed couion to meet F itzgerald, Manager Feretti and Hugo Kelly re turned from Rochester yesterday. Both Kelley and Feretti denied that the Kel ly-Ryan anair at liocnester was a "frame-up" and declared that both men did their oest. ivewy says ne can stop Ryan in a right mat wm go ten rounds or more. Johnny Coulon and Young Fitzger ald wili meet at Milwaukee on March 12. Kid Murphy and Eddie Greenwald, the other crack pair of little fellows, will clash at the rival club March 15. Packy McFarland and Joe Galligan, the rising local lightweight, are work ing hard for their coming battles at Davenport. Each is nearly at weight. wiucn win oe i&t at o ciock. aoin are great hitters ana 11 is uniiKeiy that the bout win go tne scheduled nrteen rounds. Jack Chrispy, the newsboy champion of Chicago, who won from Kid Frederlckson on a knockout in the fourth round Tuesday evening, is out to meet all comers at 130 pounds. Jack Roe, the LaPorte welterweight, will challenge Anderson for another bout, to take place anywhere. In the United States. That is pretty strong talk from the LaPorte man. Reno, Nev., March 7. The final de tails of the Brltt-Corbett fight were practically arranged yesterday by the promoters of the Reno Athletic asso ciation and Willis Britt. It is believed that the $15,000 for the purse and the forfeits by the fighters will be posted today. As soon as the final details are arranged the articles will be signed. There is some talk now that Sailor Burke, the local middleweight fighter, will get the first chance at Jack Palmer, tho English heavyweight, in a limited round bout in the Quaker city. Jack McGuigan, matchmaker of the Na tional Athletic club of that City, is anxious to put Burke on with Palmer, and will try and complete the match tomorrow. If the men meet they will battle six rounds at catch-weights. SP ORTING BRIEFS. Albany, N. Y., March 7. A bill to put horse racing on a higher plane and rid it of some of the evils that now attend the acta of judges and stewards was Introduced yesterday by Senator. McCall of New lorK. 'ihe measure amend3 the act establishing a racing commission by providing that before a Derson Is appointed a judge or Btewards by the Jockey club or National Steeplechase association his appointment must be certified to the state racing commission and to the super visor of taxes for running race meet ings. Articles were signed yesterday for a wrestling bout between Frank Gotch, the champion, and Jfbhn Rooney, the star of the Chicago police force, the bout will be held in Chicago March 14 at the Coliseum. In this number there are only seven members of last season's team who will report. There are Rudd, Warner, Cook, Dowers, Howard, Wilson, and Swalm. Billy Forney, last years catcher for the team, will not play with them this year on account of managing an independant club at Valparaiso, Ind. Los Angeles, Cal., March 7. A big surprise met the speculators in the first race yesterday when Teddy Muck romped home an easy winner over Taos, the favorite. The price on Muck was 50 to 1. He got off well and took up the running without losing any time, and flashed a length and a half to the good.
Dover, Del, March 1. An important bill legalizing horse racing in Delaware under the strict Jurisdiction of the Jockey club of New York was introduced in the house of representatives of the legislature yesterday by Representative Efnnum of Sussex" county.

Dr. Miles' Anti-Pain Pills relieve pain not only once, but as many times as it is necessary to take them. Many persons who suffer from chronic ailments find in them a source of great relief from the suffering which they would otherwise be compelled to endure. Their soothing influence upon the nerves strengthen rather than wreaken them. For this reason they selIdom lose their effectiveness. The Dr. Mnes Anti-Pain Pills have been a blessing; to me.
