Andrew Ringman, 9912 Ewlng avenue, has written to Senator Benlamin
B. Tillman of South Carolina, asking
mm to lecture in South Chicago some
time during April in behalf of a so
ciety whose name Mr. Ringman does
not care to disclose at present, on account of the premature excitement
that it might occasion.
This precaution is based upon the
excitement caused amonsr the colored
citizens of Chicago on the occasion of
benator Tillman's last, appearance in that city, when he spoke under the
auspices of the Woman's Hospital association on the subject of the annex
ation of Cuba. Tf T I . .
. 'uiiBiaaii uoes not reel any
emniiy toward the colored race, on the contrary he sympathizes with
mem. His Invitation to Senator Till man is because of his belief that tin
uwuiu Carolina statesman is one of
tne greatest orators of the day and that if he responds favorable the so
cieties under whose auspices the 1
ture will be given will be benefited financially.
In case Senator Tillman accepts, the lecture will take place some time in
April m the Calumet theater. Xrgroea Seek to Enjoin. It will be remembered that th oc
casion of Senator Tillman's last ap-
t-earace ln Chicago followed close
upon the heels of one of the South
Carolina statesman's nicturesnue ti
rades against the negro In the senate. Also just' previously President Rnn.
velt has discharged two companies of colored soldiers dishonorably from the United States army, and Ferdinand Barnett, a colored lawyer of Chlontro
who was thought to have been elected to the office of municipal Judge, had been found on a recount of the ballot not to the entitled to the honor. The resentment of the colored
Chicago crystallized in an effort to prevent the lecture of Senator Till
man. Judge Landis of the United States court was petitioned for an in.
Junction prohibiting the talk. Senator
unman appeared, however, and the lecture was of great financial benefit
to the association under whose auspices it was given.
