BATTLEGROUND Says Herman Is Only Man Capable of Making Gans Hurry. TRAIIIIIIG HEARS END The Kid Cuts Out Boxinc For Fear j of Hurting His Hands Is in Good Condition. Tonopah, Nev., Deo. 27 Referee Jack Welch, the man who will Judgo the debate in Riley's fight pavilion on New Year's day, arrived from the coast last night, according to arrangement. Welch states that the whole coast city push is going to be here for the battle and that James Edward Britt will arrive tonight. The train is very late, but a few native sons will hang around to welcome James Ed ward. Welch says he believes Herman to be the only man in the country on present showing who has got a chance with Joe Gans. He says that he has followed the KIJ's work carefully, and that the Chicagoan is a sturdy little fellow, who is capable of both taking and giving a great amount of punish ment. Welch, while he will make no absolute statement of his opinion, ap pears to think that the New Year's battle will be a long one. Gans Let T'y in Work. Routine work marked the day in the the two camps. Gans has passed out the work that he is only a fraction over weight, and, while he does not tell his plans to everybody, it is understood that he is going to ease up and do only rough work to keep him self in proper trim. Joe seems to be very anxious to get into the ring as strong as possible. Herman after his work today said that he would cut out the boxing to a large extent. He has been remarkably lucky in having no accidents to his bands, and is aetermined to take no unnecessary chances at this stage of the game. He has not a bruise to show for liis work, and he does not want to be Injured now. TANNEHILL SIGNS FIRST AS A 1907 WHITE SOX. Is Solid Willi Comtwkey Because of III Fnst Work on Third During Last Senson'N Championship Series. Lee Tannehill has the distinction of being the first of the world's champion White Sox to sign a contract for 1907. The world-beaters' third sacker drop ped into President Comlskey's office in the Marquette building yesterday af ternoon to chat for a few minutes with the "Old Roman," and when he left he carried his next season's meal ticket in his inside pocket. Tannehill made himself solid for life with the owner of the White Sox by the brilliant work he did at shortstop in the first three battles of the world's series before Davis was able to get Into the game. Although "Tanny" played in only half of the series Com iskey credits him with being as im portant a cog in the winning machine as any of his stars. Tannehill saved the first game, which ended 2 to 1, by a wonderful running catch in short left field, with a Cub on third, and started the batting rally in the third game which George Rohe finished with his well-remembered three-bagger with the bases full, that game ending 3 to 0.
