Buerk Say Pupils Promoted to Higher Branches Are Lacking la Preparation. In an address delivered Wednesday afternoon at Indianapolis at the, opening session of the county superintendents' convention, at the state house II. A. Buerk. principal of the New Albany high school, made some very blunt assertions In regard to eighth grade students who are received into the high school. "What kind of material do we re ceive from the eighth grade?" he ask ed the superintendents. "And what preliminary training for the high school work Is done in the eighth grade? My experience is this that the great majority are well prepared for the work, but that a small per cent are thrown into the high schools because they have spent the allotted time In the grades and the authorities wish to get rtd of them. The high school is thereby incumbered with a body of deficient pupils from the beginning of the school who for four years from a body of delinqusit students, the work for which Is rrdt easily adjusted to the normal work of the school. As for preparation I find the eighth grade graduates weak in grammer and grammatical construction, and in certain mathematical principle. The first is no ticeable as soon as they begin to study English, Latin and German, the sec ond when they begin the study of algebra. BITTEN BY MAD DOG ? Frev has been missing since last Wednesday and his absence is a mystery to his friends. They are satisfied, however, that no harm has come to him as there are Indications that his departure was premeditated. His belongings with the exception of a few small articles were taken from his room and his key was found within. An examination of his books In the office showed that they were In good order and those Interested In his welfare have come to the conclusion that Mr. Frey has gone to take a wife with whom he Is expected to return. TOWLE OPEUA HOUSE. "The Heal Widow Brown" holds a reception at the Towle opera house Tuesday, Jan. 1, under the watchful eye of Mr. A. Q. Scammon. This lady is a real personage and about her hinges some of the most amusing complications ever introduced into farce comedy. Her attendant merry makers comprise some of the cleverest comedians and comediennes on the stage. She is a devout admirer of bright, up-to-date songs, and captivating dances; and the play abounds with them. She is also a stickler for fashion, and the cos tumes are chic and rare. The play was built for laughter, so do not be mislead, for if you are really of a serious turn of mind, don't go. Wait until Mr. So and So comes along with his grand aggregation of legitimate artists in "Othello," etc. ADDS TWO THEATERS TO NORTHERN INDIANA CIRCUIT. Harvey Brooks of the Grand Opera House Here, Beported to Now Have Control of Ten Show Houses. (Special to Lake County Times). La Porte, Ind., Dec. 28. Harvey Brooks, the manager of the Grand opera house in Hammond has closed a deal by which play houses in Michigan City and La Porte were added to his vaudeville circuit, which are said now to number ten theaters. It was learned this afternoon that Mr. Brooks left for Michigan City this morning for the purpose of completing arrangements for a theater there However, the talk about a ten theater circuit seems to be a myth and is probably no more than a little cleverly secured free advertising. Mr. Brooks has been succeeding .splendidly with his Hammond theater and it would be in keeping with his enterprise and aggressiveness to hear of his starting a northern Indiana the atrical circuit. The La Porte and Michigan City leases cover a period of one year and the work of selecting resident manag ers Is now being done. COMMISSIONERS SPECIAL SESSION (Special to Lake County Times).
