The steel frame work is going up rapidly on the office building, several car loads coming in daily. s

Sam Miller of Breese, 111., spent this afternoon hero looking over the situation. He i.s having plans prepared for the building that will occupy his fifty feet on Broadway.

Miss Eugenia Knotts spent today in the postofflce here helping the local force on account of the indisposition of the postmaster and the extra amount of work incidental to Christmas.

The Illinois Improvement & Ballast company has completed the placing of ballast on Seventh avenue from Virginia street to Broadway and are now working west on Seventh from Broadway.

The last man to occupy the local municipal hotel has been laboring all day under the hallucinations incidental to delirium tremens. He is a poor laborer whose Christmas celebration has left a decidedly bad taste.

Stein, Watt & Company have a large force of men at work hauling away the hill at Eighth avenue and Jefferson street. The sand is loaded by hand into dump cars and hauled out on the dinkey tracks to be dumped with horses. The officers of the police department are clubbing together and holding up a few of their intimate friends for the wherewith for purchasing a medal. The medal will be the property of the winner of the shooting contests which will be held from time to time by the chief and his deputies.

The work on the company's boarding house in Delaware street is well under way. The foundation is practically in and the contractors expect to begin work with the carpenters tomorrow. The building is to be three story modern in every appointment, and will have about sixty rooms. It is probable that tiiis building will be occupied largely by the office forces when the office building is completed and the company gets its local quarters transferred.

Mr. Staples, of the Staples-IIilde-brand company of South Bend, spent all of today here completing his arrangements for opening up the Supply company. He expects to be ready to begin business here by the iirst t the year. Several large consignments of material and supplies have arrived and are being placed in the ware house. The office furniture has been installed and the local man for the company expects to be here about the last of the week. The company will carry a full line of building materials excepting lumber, as well as ma.'on supplies. Tho present location of the company is but temporary and as soon as the railroad situation is settled, it expects to erect commodious quarters and large yards.

Tho Western Boarding & Supply company a corporation of Chicago who make it a business to contract for the feeding of large numbers of men in large construction camps, are making preparations to build an ice house along the Grand Calumet for ttieir own use. They feed tho Steel company's men at the barracks, just south of the river, and also the Falgenau Construction company's large gang of men, as well as furnishing the rooms, and caring for them.

Mrs. Sherlock arrived home from Pittsburg, Pa., the latter part of the week, where she was called to the bedside of her daughter, Mrs. Corbett, who was very low. Mrs. Corbett is now convalescent.

William Wardell died Tuesday evening at his home, 10719 Calhoun avenue, after an illness of five eiays with pneumonia. The deceased was born in Canada forty-two years ago and has resided in South Peering for the past eighteen years. For several years lie was employed as a water tender for the Standard Oil company at Whiting and the past couple of years he ht? held the same position with the International Harvester company at South peering. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the water tenders' union. Besides a host of friends he leaves a widow and four young children, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 0 o'clock from his late residence to St. Kevin's Catholic church, interment following In Mt. Olivet cemetery.

The funeral services of Mrs. Laura P. Castle were held at her residence in Lowell Wednesday, the Rev. John Bruce officiating. Her remains were interred in the Lowell cemetery. Mrs. Castle whose maiden name was Laura P. Hull, daughter of the late Samuel and Emeline Hull, was born in the state of Vermont in the year 1847. She was united in marriage to George Castle in the year 1S66. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Riggs. Both Mr. Castle and Mrs. Riggs departed this earth some years ago. Those who survive the death of Mrs. Castle are Miss Laura Riggs, a granddaughter, two brothers, Albert and Jasper, of Lowell and three sisters, the Mesdames Joseph Clark and Ed

and all the members are asked to be in attendance.

The Odd Fellows lodge will Install their officers Jan. 8, in their lodge room in Mass' hall. An elaborate program is being gotten up by the committee, and they aim to make this the best meeting ever held here. After the formalities of installation are over a lunch will be served.
