The Hammond high school football team which will play Crown Point tomorrow, in one of the most important games of the season and on tho following Saturday will try conclusions with the strong team of Lowell, is one of the best aggregations of football players in northern Indiana. The team is light, but it makes up for lack of weight with greater speed and with the tendency towards ofH-n play on account of the netv rules they should give a good account of themselves during tle coming season. The team has had considerable bad luck this year through accidents to several of the best men on the team.
and others have been kept out cf the game because of parental objection or
on account of their studies.
The squad is a large one, however,
and can be developed into an efficient squad of pigskin pushers in time. It is expected that this team will give a
good account of itself during the com
ing season and the reassuring thing about the squad is the fact that whether or not they succeed in defeat
ing their rivals over the county this year, they have the nucleus of a good
team which, with the new students that will enter the high school next year, will be a factor to be reckoned
with in the championship battle of 1907.

SPOETING BRIEFS. Numbering twenty men and accom
panied by Director Nicol and Coach Witham, the Turdue football team will
arrive in Chicago' tomorrow ready to do
battle the following day with Stagrs's Maroons in the opening game of the season on Marshall field.
Manager Loetz of the La Torte Ath
letics made the announcement today
that he had secured the South Chicago team for the game on the Pine Lake gridiron Sunday afternoon. It is hoped to have Boyd in the game and to otherwise strengthen the lineup.
Terry McGovern and Young Corbett are to meet again in the ring. This lime they are to battle fifteen rounds before a club at Chelsea. Mass.. for a purse of $10,000. Terry received an offer from the Chelsea club this afternoon, and at once agreed to accept it if the club will post a large enough forfeit to guarantee the pulling off of the match.
Kid Herman's hopes for a match with some of the topnotch lightweights are about to be realized. Manager Nate Lewis yesterday received a telegram from the former Chi.eago bookmaker, Mike Brennan. at Virginia City. New, offering Herman a $20,000 purse for a finish battle with either Nelson or Cans, or an $5.000 purse for a similar go with McGovern or Corbett; also $500 to cover expenses.
Kain and mud yesterday interfered with the hard scrimmage and long, strenuous practice which. Coach Stagg had mapped out for his Maroons as the last hard afternoon before the Purdue game, and, as a substitute, the
Maroon director gave them only a light j practice, which is to be fo'lowel up! with another of the same character! this afternoon. Today such finishing I
touches as are possible will fee put on the Maroons before their first game of the season, with Purdue tomorrow afternoon on Marshall field. The Purdue team, at Lafayette last night, was sent through its last practice by Coach "Witham and will arrive in Chicago today, prepared for the fray and determined to win, if by any possibility it can down Stagg's men.
