Natural Spectacles. Many birds are provided with natural spectacles, a transparent membrane called the third eyelid. This third eyelid when not in use lies folded in the Inner corner of the eye. Two muscles work it, spreading: it over the cornea or folding it up again much more cleverly than a man can put on or take off his spectacles. But for its third eyelid the eagle could not look at the sun. The spectacled bear belongs to Chile. Its Latin nnme Is Ursus ornatus. It is black, and around Its eyes pale rings are drawn which have exactly the appearance of a pair of goggles. St Ixnils Globe-Democrat.
His Only Duel. No subject could be mentioned on which Uncle Erastus had not something to say, and In many matters ha had a large experience. "No, sah, I don't approve ob duels," he Baid to one of the summer residents who delighted in hearing his talk. "Oh, yas, sah, I's fought a duel once. Yas, sah, wid a trifling yaller man, about a gal. Yas, sah, we war bound to marry de same one. "We fought dat duel out In de road, sah, in a lonely spot, an' we didn't experience no shots on de pusson, either ob us, but we brought down a fine cow, sah, dat was watching de affair trom a medder ovah de fence. Rather Caustic. "Did you tell your father I was a humorist?" asked the tall young man with long hair. "I did," replied the pretty girl, "and he laughed." "Laughed? Why, I thought he used to say writing jokes was hard on the brain' "So he did; but he snys he never heard of your wr'ting any jokes." Chicago News.
Simple Nora. The children at the Neighborhood club were telling their embroidery and sewing teacher of a little girl who they thought wouold be much benefited by a course of settlement instruction. "She's kind of simple, Nora is," said one of Nora's acquaintances. "There'3 a lot of things she ought to learn. She doesn't know how to take the best advantages, Miss Marvin." "How do you mean, Maggie?" asked the teacher, looking with inward amusement at the sober young face bent over a somewhat grimy square of linen. "Weil, like this," said Maggie, raising her eyes for a moment. "Yesterday Fhe was wtth me into the provision store, and she was sniffing away at the pineapples, that you can smell any time, and there was a piece of venison, that the man hardly ever has. Just behind her back."

A keen, cool, practical man, unacquainted with impulse, he must have acted from careful study and deliberately formed judgment when he placed upon his wife the great responsibility of a proper distribution of his wealth. He meant to honor her, but he has placed her in a most cruel position. The glitter of her gold will keep the public eye upon her every movement. A refined and sensitive woman, notoriety is loathsome to her. Yet how can she escape it? Poor lady! She is "too rich." THE WOMAN IS FORGOTTEN IN HER MONEY. envy or avarice in every face. Soon she vcill unconsciously question the motive of every action. She is ''too rich." Soon, save for the old tried friends, she? THE WOMAX will be forgotten in her money. What a pity Mr. Sage bad not folloved the example set by Peter Cooper. Let the makers of great fortunes dispose of them WHILE LIVING, teste the joys of giving, feel the satisfaction of carrying out correctly the plans for the benefit of others, make the path of their dear ones safe, smooth and secure without burdening their wives with wealth unmanageable and duty too heavy for them, give their money WITH THEIR OWX HANDS and'prevent th humiliation and publicity of will breaking. Lord Bacon says a word or two that strangely fits Mr. Sage's case. Speaking of ways to win fortune, he says : "PARSIMONY IS ONE OF THE DEST AND YET IT 13 NOT INNOCENT, FOR IT WITHHOLDETH MEN FROM WORKS OF LIOER. ALITY AND CHARITY."
