Hammond took the measure of the Senecas yesterday, defeating them by tho score of 3 to 2. This makes the third victory out of live games and makes Hammond the victory over this fast squad of ball tossers. After the preliminary game in which tho Joo Long Juniors defeated the Malt

Marrows of this city by the score of 3 to 1 in seven fast innings, the Hammonds started out in a business-like manner to do the little job that had been cut out for them. They scored two runs in the first inning on a twobase hit by Donohue and then fought inring by inning until the fifth when Hammond secured the run that proved to bo the winner. White at short was a whirlwind and was easily the star of the day. He had six assists and there should have been seven, if McMahon had not made an error by dropping the ball. The game was won through the superior batting ability of the Hammond team, they having secured IS hits to the Senecas' 7. Donohue struck out ten men to Dooner's eight, but evened thing.i up by passing live jnen to Dooner's one. Only a small crowd was in attendance, probably on account of the counter attractions, the Sox-Washington game at Chicago and the football game at East Chicago.

Chicago Heights is on the program

for next Sunday and as the boys from the neighboring city have a good team and a laudable ambition to wallop the

Hammond boys, the contest should prove to be a good one.

The Pvah Rah Rah boys were out in

full force to see the first football game

of the season at East Chicago yester

day between Mee's Athletes and the

Tigers of that city. The game was hardly a success from the spectator's standpoint of view but it was valuable as a practice game and was a good tryout for the players on both teams. Much to the surprise of the football fan3 the new game was not so very different from the old and it was the

same old stunt of 7-11-44, snap the ball

and go at it again.

an 8 yard gain. Reel made 4 more and

Waito made 5. The ball was then lost

on a fumble and for the first time East Chicago made the required 10 yards in

three downs. They fumbled again, how

ever, and again Morris was the man to fall on the ball. Zigler and Reel

both made short gains when time was called with the ball in the middle of

the field. Second Half.

In the second half there were several

changes in the lineup of the Hammond

team. Geip, le., was substituted for

Zeigler, rh., and Heiser was given

Geip's place. Murphy took Booser's place and Sehulte went in the game ra

the place of E. Reel.

East Chicago got the ball on a kick

off and ran it back 10 yards. They

failed to make the required gains after Heiser had thrown the East Chicago captain back for ten yards, lost the ball and went over to Hammond. Geip fumbled and East Chicago got the ball.

Murphy, the Hammond lg. got through the line and caught the East Chicago captain fcr 10 yard loss but his team

made up the loss and for the second

time made the required distance.

Immediately after this. East Chicago lost the ball on downs and Geip went

through the line for 10 yards, Stevens following with a gain of S yards. Stevens punted but the punt was block

ed and East Chicago got the ball. It was given to their left halfback but i Morris was too quie. for him and ran clear around the team and tackeled him for a five yard loss. The ball went to Hammond on downs and Geip kicked it 40 yards out of bounds. Cole made a quarterback run of 20 yards but the umpire claimed that he did not run out the required 5 yards and he was penalized 5 yards. Stev

ens, Geip. Reel and "Waite all made good

gams when the ball was lost on a fumble. East Chicago tried a forward pass but Farmer Smith grabbed the" ball and would have made a touchdown if it had not been for the crowd which stopped him. There was a crowd of 300 or 400 people at the game and the contest was spoiled by the inability of the guards to keep the crowds on. the field. They swarmed over the gridiron like a Bowery crowd at a dog fight and there was no one to keep them back so that the players could get in their work. Lineup:
