SPORTING BRIEFS. The Joe Long Juniors will play the Malt Marrows next Sunday at the Harrison park grounds. Yost sprung a surprise today when he placed 240-pound Captain George Curtis at end. The Central league baseball Beaton came to a close yesterday with Grand Rapids the winner of the pennant. The Ohio, for 2:12 trotters, purse, $5,000, was the chief attraction at the second days grand circuit meeting at Oakley park today. Nut Boy, winner of the ?1 0.000 Charter Oak stake, won the event in handy fashion. He took the first heat easily after Dr. Frasse broke near the wire. The football players at Illinois university have been instructed to study the new rules until they become perfect in them. These studies will be supplemented by lectures from the coach. A new league is to be organized that will be known as the Mississippi Valley league. The proposed organization will comprise the cities of St. Paul, Minneapolis, Stillwater, Redding, Winona, Eau Claire and probably one or two other Wisconsin towns. Two great horses were beaten at Gravesend track yesterday, GoxzfirlfTm the Gravesend track yesterday, Go Between, the winner of the suburban handicap, and Dandelion, the winner of more important handicaps this sea son than any other thoroughbred. They finished far back in the ruck in the Occidental handicap. Coy Maid tak ing first honors cleverly from Dolly Spanker. There has been considerable betting on the Marathon race which is to be run next Saturday. Kraft of the N. I. A. C, Bennett, the Canadian entry; Louis Marks of the First Regiment, Hohman of the Seventh Regiment. Sidruy Hatch of River Forest arid Fred I.orz of the Mohawk Athletic club of New York, being ruled favorites at even money, men of the bits being made on the first two. Ehud M-tz-ner, winner last year, is at 2 to 1. Probably J 2.000 has been put up. The Iopester are linsy. The whole aspect of the American league pennant race has changed as a result of the outcome of the last two games. It was not so much the fact that Chicago defeated Boston, which was expected, as that Detroit should succeed in defeating New York after that team has just made Things look rather bad for the Sox. It is reported that there are several wealthy Chicago backers of the south side team who gave each of the Detroit pitchers $250 because they stopped New York. Tins may or may not be true, but the fact remains that New York as a result of the trouncing at the hands of Detroit, is now second in the betting, while Cleveland is a close third. The race is now one of tire closest in years and the entrance of Cleveland into the race on the home stretch makes it all the more interes tinge
LUCK HELPS SOX WIN; JONES DOES THE REST,
After a Long Hun ant n Dive the Great I'lelder Nab the Hall and Mak a Double I'lay liimxt-If. With a liberal sprinkling of luck, a remarkable catch and an unassisted double play by Jones, with Altrock at his best, and the Detroit Tigers accommod;:ting enough to wallop New York for the second time, everything came Chicago's way and this morning finds them again at the top of the percentage column. The game with Boston was won by the score of 3 to 2 Jones' remarkable play cam In the ninth inning. The score stood 2 to 2. Grimshaw had just scored on his triple and Chadbornes single. Morgan had sacrifu-fd Chadborne to second. At this critical moment Freeman pasted a long drive towards left center and Jones made for it. Chadborne thought it was good for three buses and started for home. He had rounded third when Jones, by a remarkable effort, leaped sidewise and thrust out his hands. The ball struck in his mit and Jones, seeing that Chadborne had no chance to get back to second, ran to the plate and made the double tdav 1.! nisei f. Jesse Tannehill tried his level best to get even with the Sox for snatching the victory out of his hands yesterday but he was unequal to the task and nine hits and three passes in out inning were secured from his delivery. The Sox had secured all of their inns in the first seven innings and itthe eighth, when Boston began to look dangerous, the Chicagoans trieu to increase their lead, but their efforts were unavailing. In the ninth tilings looked especially blue but Walsh was put in Altrock's place anu the game was saved. SPUDS DEFEAT I1ROOKLYX IN TEN-INNING GAME. I'flcmter's Pitching Is h Feature Iloldn Itronklyu to No Hit for 1 irt Elgin InningM. The Spuds ran up against a hard proposition in their game with Brooklyn yesterday and were only able tc defeat them after playing a ten-lnnin contest with a 1 to 0 victory as tin reward for their efforts. PHester was right on edge and for eight long in nings kept the Brooklynites from getting a hit. For nine long innings it seemed that it was Impossible for the Brooklyn team to hit the wide curves that, cut the corners of the plate in such a maner that the batter either was compelled to step out to reach them or thought he had to step back to get a crack at the ball. Pfiester's speed was what made his delivery so effective and came very near giving him credit for a no hit game. The game was won in the tenth when Schulte rapped but a two bagger. Hoffman folowed and was almost as lucky for ho cracked a hot single over to center which enabled Schulte to score. SOUL INJURED. The Indianapolis News has the following football gossip about the Wabash college football team and the visit of Conville, the big Purdue fullback : Crawfordsville, Ind., Sept. 23. "Dad" Conville, the famous Purdue fullback, came down from Lafayette yesterday on a fraternity mission and was an interested spectator at the Wabash Icotball practice last evening. He madeknown his identity and was assigned to a seat on the bleachers along with the scarlet "rooters." No effort was made to conceal any of the team movements or plays on his account since the entire Purdue squad will attend the Indiana-Wabash game. It was the best practice of the season for the scarlet-clad warriors. The change in the weather was conducive to speed, for which Coach Cayou has been calling, and the players displayed more real football vim than has been shown on Ingalls field this season. Gipe and Sohl are laid up with minor Injuries sustained in fierce scrimmage last week, but will be in condition within a day or two. Sprow, the regular center, was called to Missouri last week by the death of a relative, but is expected back in the game by tomorrow. in his absence "Guy" P.rown has been playing the position very acceptably, it is possible that Sprow will try out for the vacant position at fuliback. ' Garver, a Crawfordsville high school star, is almost certain to make a place in the back field. He is light, but exceedingly fast. Stiers, Cutshall and Sold are among the promising candidates for the back field. The latter, in addition to his- speed qualifications, has been punting on an average of fifty yards. Freeman, a forward on the championship basketball team last year, re-entered college yesterday. NOTICE.
