SPORTING BRIEFS. Electioneer, the winner of the Futu rity at Sheepshead Bay was sold for $30,000 by William Lakeland, the owner. Jimmy Coffroth says he will bet $2,500 that Willie Fitzgerald, the Brooklyn light weight, can beat Nelson. Joseph F. Hagen, better known as Philadelphia Jack O'Brian, will fight Sam Berger 20 rounds when he returns from Australia where he fights Bill Squires. Sawyer and Wood, two Chicago golf experts, are in the finals in the tournament for the amateur golf champ ionship of the West which is being held at St. Louis. The eyes of the English speaking race are on the contestants in the Harvard-Cambridge boat race which will be held on the Thames today. Thousands will see, the race. The Indiana-Illinoi3 polo project has been abandoned for the reason that the rinks in Bloomington and Springfield, 111. were sold or dismantled. It is now proposed to start an Indiana-Ohio league. Nelson's fiance. Miss Blanche Savoy, who traveled all the way from Chicago to Goldfield to see "Bat" fight,, and who was expected to marry the Hegewisch boy after the fight, did not stay to condole with Nelson and left Goldfield the next day. The Hammonds have scheduled another game with the Senecas, the only team that has been able to consistently defeat the locals. The game will be played in two or three weeks. The resuits of the games played so far this year the: May 6, Senecas 7, Hammond 1; May 30, Senecas 4. Hammond 3; July 1, Senecas 1, Hammond 3. AVhttiag the Kaneball Attraction. A game that is causing more com ment one way or another than any game that has been played by the locals this year is that tomorrow between Hammond and Whiting. Although the first game was played some time ago and there has been the excitement of a labor day celebration to take the minds of the fans from this contest, they are as much interested in the outcome as they were the day that rain compelled the management to postpone the game. Every man on the team has from $10 to $15 up on the result of the game so they will be sure to be on tiptoe throughout the nine innings. The weather promises to be fine and a record breaking crowd is expected. The sports are still betting on the result, the largest bet made recently is one of $200 made a few days ago. The talk about BradJng not pitching for Whiting- Is not true as the following official lineup of the Whiting team will show. Carringer, lb; Long, 2b; Lampman, 3b; Lundberg, ss; Close, c; Brading, pitcher; Shrogy, cf; Gerard, rf; Johnson, If. Subscribe lor Tbe Lake County Tlm.
Blair Did Not Get Place. Harvey Blair, the Hammond athlete.
wiio was one of the representatives of the Chicago Athletic association at the national track and field champion ship meeting of the Amateur Atnletic union, failed to secure a place in either the 100 yard dash or the 220, the events in which he was entered. The proram yesterday was confined to the junior champonship and today the senior championship events will be pulled off As Elair is entered in both the junior and senior championship events he may yet have' a chance to win M H Giffen of the C. A A., who is a Joliet lad, broke the junior discus iecord by hurling the saucer 121 feet 11 inches The Sot Take a Day off. The partisans who have been loyal to the White Sox all the way through will be pleased to know that Comiskey bas at last secured a new catcher in the person of Frank Roth of the Milwaukee American association team The new man lias had considerable major league experience and will, in a measure fill the place caused by the absence of Sullivan, who is out of the game with a broken thumb. As It is Hart is the only available catcher on the Sox team and in the event of an accident Manager Jones would be placed in a dangerous position. However, Roth will get into the game tomorrow. Jones still maintains that the New York spurt does not worry him and he is relying on his ability to get the best of the team from the metropolis in the series they play in Chicago soon. Spuds Enjoy Rig "Rattest' After the Spuds had secured four hits and two runs off Phillippi, the Pirate's pitcher, in the third inning and then came back again in the fifth for six hits and four runs he was replaced by Manske who pitched a much better game but lacked support needed to win his game. The score was 9 to 1. The Pirates didn't look much better than the Boston Nationals at any stage of the game and simply could not connect with Ruelbach's curves. The only time the Pittsburg boys had a look in came "when a cloud of smoke envelop ed the field in the ninth Inning. The Pirates were all in their element and in the frolic they had secured a run and saved themselves from the disgrace of a shutout. Every Chicago man on the team took part in the "bat fest" in the fifth inning when Moran started things off and when the last man. Schulte, scampered home, 4 runs had been added to Chicago's total Another run in the sixth and two In the seventh finished the good work for the Spuds. Proper Interior Decoration. Mrs. Mary L. Bookwalter, in a talk the other day on the subject of. interior decoration, said that "the average home i3 a jungle of unrelated things, most of them a burden to the housekeeper, the maid and the bread winner, to say nothing of the guest.' Correct lines, harmony of color aad restraint in ornament were among the things she recommended. No Tidal Waves on Great Lakes. There are no real tidal waves on the great lakes. Occasionally waves of astonishing height roll in upon the shore, where there is no storm, but such phenomena are not in any sense tides. They are the result of great atmospheric pressure, far from the places where they are observed, or ol distant tempests. Monument to Ovid. A monument is about to be erected to the poet Ovid at Sulmona, the ancient Sulmo of Samnlum, a movement for the purpose having bem set on foot by the Italian poet, Gabriele d'Annuzio. The Sound of Arms. Military expenditures of the principal countries of the world were as fol lows in 1904-5: United Kingdom, f 157,798,190; India, $100,878,470; Austria and Hungary, $87,975,360; France, 1136,993,715; Germany, $161,208,135; Italv. $57,258,700: Japan, $23,937,285: 'Russia, $194,203,920; United States, $115,S43,S65. Chinese on the Right Track. The Chinese, alarmed by the manner in which the Indian and Ceylon teas have driven theirs out of the market, have investigated the matter and come to the conclusion that all j that is needed to bring theirs to the i foreground again Is systematic advertising.
