SPORTING BRIEFS. President Murphy of the Spuds announces that he has secured two new players. They are Chenault and Purdue of the Vincennes team, both pitchers, and Warren Seabaugh, a young catcher. The score of the games between the Joe Long Juniors and the Kouts team was erroniously reported to be 9 to 2, when the result was 9 to 6. Gans has already reduced his weight to 133 pounds while Nelson is two pounds heavier. At present the betting odds are 10 to 9 in favor of Gans. The White Sox Rest. The White Sox were compelled to take a rest yesterday on account of the rain and will have to play a double header with New York today. It is an interesting fact that in the last three games that Chesbre has pitched all against Chicago his team-mates have scored but one run. It is also a fact that in the last six games, all of which have been played with New York, the Yanks were able to make only three runs. Spuds Play off Tie and Win. The disheartened Giants left Chicago for Pittsburg last night after having been defeated in three of the four games that were played in the recent series. In the sixth, four men were passed by Ames and a run was forced in by his poor pitching. One of the incidents of the game happened when McGann was put out of the game in the sixth Inning for threatening the umpire. The feature of the game was the wonderful stick work by Jimmy Slagle. He made three hits, one of them a three I bagger, which constituted just half of the hits that were secured from Ames delivery. .His tripple in the seventh was just 'what was needed

to bring in the three runs that were needed so much just at that time. The final score was: Chicago, 4; New York, 2.

THEATRICAL NOTES. Local theatregoers will be delighted with Manager Tcwle's announcemer.t cf the engagement of W. B. Patton as one of the season's most worthy offerings. Each year Mr. Patton has added popularity to his long list of admirers, who have witnessed his performances. Very few were aware of the fact that he was the author of the plays ha was appearing in, which have furnished an evening's enjoyment to so many thousand peo ple in the past few years. He is also the author of "The Slow Poke," a new Western play of great heart interest that he will be seen in here this season. He is surrounded with an exceptionally clever cast and the scenic effects are described as being both elaborate and appropriate. With but three more weeks to run, that wonderful young star, Miss Elsie Janis, is continuing as a genuine furore in the delightful automobile play, "The Vanderbilt Cup," which is crowding Chicago's most beautiful theater, the Colonial, despite the sultry weather and the unpromising theater temperature, as judged from the thermometer. The merit of an attraction that can play to crowded houses during the month of Aug ust Is to be regarded as a matter of course, and Miss Janis has set a new standard in stage entertainment, for she is not only versatile and wonderfully well poised in her work as an actress and gives the. finest imitations that the stage has ever seen, but the carries herself with the ease and adaptability of a woman of thirty although she has yet to reach her eighteenth birthday. The idea of giving a complimentary matinee to her seventeen-year-old girl friends next Monday, struck with such tremendous impact that the management and star were compelled to retire in confusion and defeat. From the immediate and general favor in which the affair was received, it was speedily recognized that the performance would mean thousands of disappointed young girls unable to obtain admission owing to the limited capacity of the house, and in order to avoid all such troubie and any disappointjment of uch a nature it was decided to aoandon the idea, with the annouccement that when Miss Janis returns to Chicago again, she will endeavor to secure the auditorium for such an event. The cast plate glass of which mirrors. shop windows and such things are made is prepared from the whitest sand, broken plate glass, soda, a small amount of manganese and cobalt oxides. The glass when perfectly melted is poured upon an Iron table of the gize required, and the thickness is regulated by a strip of iron placed down each of the four sides of th table. Immediately after It is poured out the molten substance i? flattened down by an iron roller, which lowers the glass to the thickness of the strip3 at the sides. It Is then annealed or tempered for several days, after which it is ground perfectly level and polished to transparent brilliancy.
