New York, Aug. 8. London prices this morning were irregular with the more active stovks quoted one-quarter higher. The opening

i here was not as demonstrative as

in the past, and sentiment seemed to favor the selling side of the market for a turn. St. Paul and Union Pacific were again the features, with a large trade, and at concessions in prices, compared to yesterday's closing figures. St. Paul was probably the weakest of the Standard rails and suffered a decline of nearly three points. The liquidation in this security was on a very large scale. Transactions were in five-hundred and thousandshare lots. Rumor had it that the selling was for one of the prominent western operators who has been con

spicuously bullish on this issue all through this upward movement. Bear operators detected a vulnerable spot In American Sugar early in

the session and their offerings depressed this stock a little over two per cent. Unconfirmed rumors to the effect that a reduction in all the grades of refined sugar had been made, was given out as the cause of the weakness. The one particularly strong feature was Pennsylvania, which had a substantial advance of two points on very excellent buying. Gossip in the street was to the effect that the Pennsylvania's earnings will show large increases, owing to the extra disbursements anticipated from holdings in some of its constituent companies, notably the Chesapeake & Ohio, and Norfolk and Western, as the Pennsylvania company is a large owner of stock in both of these companies. The close was rather erratic with the declines established earlier in the session well maintained and predictions of further liquidation tomorrow by the more pessimistic operators.:

they covered around 72 cents. The news generally favored .tha bulls. Minneapolis market strong and higher cn fears of storms throughout the northwest; to much rain in the southwest preventing the marketing of new wheat. Liverpool market was quoted one-half higher for all 'features and Russian situation not so alarming. The market closed with a weak undertone.

Coin. September corn was the particular feature in this market. It sold up while the other mouths declined. The hot weather reports from sections of Kansas was given as the bull argument on September. C? :.-h sales of corn for export were 12o,mi'0 bushels. Cash demand in

this market reported a little better. Or ts ranged higher on wet weather reports in all sections from where harvesting is going on. There was considerable liquidation of September; the other months, however, were stronger and did not respond to the weakness in the former. Proivsion market rather weak, with liberal offerings of both pork and lard by packers and pit traders. Trade not so large as yesterday and

The fact that they were receiving an excellent prict; for their "second pair front" from flu American lodger did not blind them to her failings. If you"d just open one and get some fresh air, I'm sure it would do Mrs. Macleod good; she looks pale." Mr. Macleod looked at her with his usual stern and unbending gaz?. Gfrnaiiy tbv Modern Home. Let the German people keep a lesson from antiquity before their eyes. Once before an England and a Germany of no less different character have confronted each other. They were Carthage and Rome. And old Rome with its policy of force and power finally conquered the cash politics of Carthage and raised Itself to the position of the first power upon earth. We have historical example when we say that the German p"cple; must return from the Imitation of the un-German Carthaginian-British finance policy and must go back to the Roman-German policy of power and might. In no other way can a really great Weltpolitik be promoted in the hope perhaps of making ourselves ultimately the leading people in the world. Berlin Grenzboten.
