White Sox Defeat Champions. The White Sox are not content to let the nationals hold the center of the stage ' during the whole of the baseball season and are themselves making a spurt. They have been winning with fair regularity all week and to start the new week with a victory over the Phillies, bodes well for the future of Comiskey's team. Another victory for the Sox and a defeat for Cleveland, and Chicago would be out of the list of "also rans' 'and comfortably settled in j third place The best thing about the affair was the fact that the Sox not only beat the leaders, but drubbed them to the tune of 10 to 2. It was "Doc" White versus Bender on the slab, holes that he found himself in, Bendl er only succeeded in getting in deep er. Besides this White had the benefit of snappier team support than Bender received and that helped him - jsome. Tim Hurst, the umpire, made himself conspicuous by his bum decisions, but bum as they were they did not affect the result. Young Calumets Challenge, nol The Young Calumets who are ach i ing to meet amateur teams in thei class and have challenged the Tru I man avenue kids to a game to be played Saturday afternoon at 2:30 Frank Hess is their manager. Spuds Play - Exhibition Ball. After their defeat by New York in the first of the series the Chicago Nationals played an exhibitioa'game
and defeated the Troy team of the
New York state league by the score of 6 to 2. The Spuds will play again with New York today and expect to win the remaining three games. WABASH IGN0MIN0USLY I DEFEATED BY HAMMONDS. Threatened Bain Frightens Crowds Away and Only a Few Hundred See the Game. Score 12 to 1. The Hammond team again proved its prowess by defeating the Wabash team of St. Louis by the one-sided score of 12 to 1. The game was played under difficulties. At one time it was decided not to begin the performance because of the inclemency of the weather, but after waiting for a few moments the skies began to brighten and it was thought the game could be completed without the interference of the weather man. The Wabash team was not as bum as the score would Indicate. It was one of those cases where even a good team takes a slump and can't play ball any more than a lot of amateurs. The Wabash boys had the same lineup that they had when they came to Hammond a few weeks ago and made things so lively for the local team, with the exception of a - new pitcher, which they essayed to try out against Hammond. The result was disastrous as Hammond's nine runs in the first inning would indicate. McMahon pitched for Hammond and performed creditably, Donohue playing second base instead of his usual position. The game was featureiess ana quite uninteresting irom the spectators point of view. The score: Hammond. R. Again hats off to the Joe Long Juniors. They have defeated every thing in their class and yesterday they went out, of their class just for the fun of it and stil hung onto their winning streak. The game with the W. B. Conkey team was a good one and just Close! enough to be interesting. Bubby Wagner for the Conkeys was a little better in the box than Walker but the poorer team work of the print ers counteracted this and the Joe Longs won 6 to 4. The score: Joe Long Jrs. R.
