New York, Aug 4. Stocks were in a reactionarv mood this morning.
With continued advances all over I the list for the past week it was only ! natural to expect a small decline, j and realizing was in evidence all j during the session, by the bull clique j which has been so enthusiastically j bullish during the last fortnight, j
St. Paul, Copper,' Union Pacific, Atchison, Erie, Southern Railway and Brooklyn Rapid Transit were offered liberal lots by holders. The weakest feature of the day was Colorado Fuel, which lost two points from the opening price, and long stock seemed to be pressed for sale on every little bulge. The selling was of a splendid character and supposedly for one of the Western operators who has been actively engaged in manipulating this security for the past year. After the publication of the bank statement, there was an aggressive drive made at Reading and Copper, both of which declined from one to two points on liberal selling. The bank statement was about what the
general public expected, there being a decrease of about five million in reserve item, and an increase of sixteen million in loans and as a market factor, however, it was of small ecusequence. The general market closed ragged with weak undertone.
feature. The market closed weak, with indications for lower prices Monday, as the weather forecast predict showers tomorrow over the corn belt. OATS Weak and lower in sympathy with the other markets. Cash oats in the sample market offered at a concession of one-half to one cent a bushel. Export demand falling off. General selling by outside holders of oats. The market closed
weak and dull. PROVISION Pit traders have been inclined to work on the bear side of pork and lard today, selling a little of each whenever the market would take it without any decline. Very little .outside interest in the market.

A Lofty Death. Asair.a Is a volcano in Japan. A young man of that country grew despondent the other day and threw himself into the crater, leaving this letter: "Suffering a feeling of despair impels me to throw myself into the crater of vehement Asama, thus winning a splendid death and ascending the mountain's smoke to a lofty life above the sky."
l'nslakc;l Lime. Unslaked lime is useful in preventing rust because of its extraordinary capacity for absorbing moisture. Some careful workmen who take paius that their tools Khali always be in the best condition make a practice of keeping a piece of lime in their tool boxes to absorb any moisture which might oth erwise cause rust.

CHICAGO LETTER.
A King'R Itebnke.
The queen of YVurttemberg was one day walking in the streets of Stuttgart
attended by a maid of honor, when she met a body of students who refused to make room for the ladies, and thus
compelled them to walk in the gutter,
The queen reported the matter to the king, and the next day the captain of
the corps Suevia was summoned to the
palace. A servant led him into a room where there were no chairs, and there the unfortunate student had to wait a full haiir. At last the , king appeared and linaily the young., man was dismissed by him thus: "I fjannot demand that every student should know my wife, but I do demand that the Corps Suevia give place in the streets to ladies."
