THEATRICAL NOTES.
A great deal is being said and writabout the Will J. Block Amusecompany nowadays. A year ago this company was practically unof. In the inner circles of the theatrical business, however, it was known that Will J. Block, who had been manager of the Herald Square theatre, New York, and of the LaSalle theatre, Chicago, had ashimself with a Montana multi-millionaire of the name of Morris Sellers Largey, and originated a stock company under the laws of New Jersey. Mr. Block's admitted ability and thorough knowledge of the show business, and Mr. Largey's enormous capital, made a cambinawhich caused all classes and conof people in the business to sit up and take notice. They started off with three productions of musical comedy, all pretentious and costly. The first, a piece called "Kafoozelum" failed. The next, "The Geezer of Geck," was more fortunate and the third, "Coming Thro' the Rye," after a process of revision and able buildup, blossomed forth as one of the distinct successes of the season. It is the work which Mr. Block did upon "Coming Thro' the Rye" that brought his corporation to the atof the public and to the peo ple of the show business in a way that carried conviction of this mandetermination to land his company in the category of produc ing firms to be reckoned with. When this production was first seen in New York, some of the newspapers critics reviewed it unfavorably. Mr. Block was not discouraged by this, how ever,, and he kept on eliminating and adding to the score and the book and changing the principals in the company until he was rewarded with a united press favorable in its cirticisms, and with a public patronwhich was confined only to the capacity of the theatres in which "Coming Thro' the Rye" was pre sented. Wherefore, this big muscal comedy production is booked for next season in the best theatres in the United States, and the consensus of opinion is that it will be one of the conspicuous winners of the year. The great company which made such success in the piece last season has been re-engaged, except that the celebrated comedienne, Elfie Fay, be seen as Mrs. Cobb, the wealthy widow. In addition to this, the Block company is presenting Marah Ellis Ryan's great play "Told in the Hills" at Powers,' theatre, Chicago, with that sterling actor, Edwin Arden, in the star part. This piece was put on for four weeks only, but so great has been its success that the engagement has been extended to eight weeks, which brings the time up to the opening of the regular fall season at Powers'. Another production by the Block company is "The Daughters of Man,'' which goes on at the Grand Opera House, Monday night, July 30. The company employed for this play includes more high salaried actors than have ever been brought toin one cast. Among them are Charles Richman, Robert Haines, Stephen Maley, Sarah Truax, Mary Ryan, May Vokes, Lucille Flaven and many others, but these seven people represent a salary list of $2,000 a week. Their engagement by the Block company has caused somelike a sensation in circles where knowledge of stage affairs prevails. Still another play will be brought forward by this company early in the fall. It is called "Honor Bright," and that distinguished actAlice Fischer, will appear in the star role. Several engagements for this company have already been made, and they include some of the most widely known actors in the country. Thus, by the middle of October the Will J, Block Amusement company will have at least four big productions going, employing upof 250 people, representing a total salary list of clost to $10,000 a week, and a gross expense of not far from $15,000. This, it will be seen at a glance, means a total exon a season of forty weeks of something over half a million dolFor a young concern, this is "going some" and according to those who are in a position to know, its operations have only reached a fair starting stage. MERCHANT TAKES EDITOR AUTOING. Jake Lavine, the proprietor of the Boston store at Crown Point, took A. A. Bibler the edtior of the Crown Point Register for an auto ride to Michigan City and return. Mr. Bib to say the least and he readily adthat he has become an automo bile enthusiast. Mr. Bibler and Mr Ross, the manager of the Boston store called at the Lake County Times of fice on their way home and inspected the equipment of the Times' new plant. THEATRICAL NOTES.
At the Chicago opera house a brilliant revival of "Land of Nod" has been made with such instant sucthat the big theatre is crowded at every performance. With new scenery, new costumes and a company including nearly all the old favorites and some new ones, this popular ex travaganza seems likely to repeat its remarkable success of last season when it ran out the entire summer season at the "Home of ExtravaAlthough the company is larger and the production finer than those usually offered in Chicago at $1.50 the management of the opera house has established a scale of prices rangfar below anything ever before exacted for a great standard show. As this will be the only musical en tertainment of its class in Chicago for some time to come visitors to the city will doubtless be pleased to see so smart a show at a price less than half the standard rate. Mabel Barrison whose success as "Bonnie" has made her a star conto improve this dainty role while Knox Wilson's April Fool has raised him into the front rank of eccentric comedians. The famous Madcaps are still holding notable features and Walter Stanton's Giant Rooster and fighting bantam are imelements in the startling nightmare palace scene. All the other original characters such as the Rarebit, Man In the Moon, Rory Bory Alice, Knock Out Drops, Chorus Girl, and Jack of Hearts are represented by skilled artists long identified with these roles, while the beauty chorus is thought to be the best singing organization ever heard in the Chicago opera house.
